Commander / EDH Control UB (Dimir)

Calliber

"Dangerous to recognize. Deadly not to." ~Lazav

Take the best of what they have and turn it against them; see them fight their own reflections and confront their own weakness; manipulate the board state at instant speed to cripple enemies.

This deck started out as the Pre-constructed 2014 Teferi commander deck, and was slowly altered and changed over time to what it is now. I don't play competitive, table top casual budget only (for now) and my play group does not utilize infinite combo's unless you can accidentally combo into it with an opponents card. That said, it has gone up against some competitive decks in our EDH group quite successfully though I havent had to match up against a top tier deck yet. My play style is blue/black control and manipulation. My play group consists of Sliver, Boros Giant/Angels (2015 pre-con), B/W Enchantment (2015 modified pre-con), Black Zombie, Atraxa Modified, two Golgari-sac engines, G/W Elves, Dereti Artifact, Group-Hug W/R/U, Nin Pain Artist, Nekusar, and a new 2016 Pre-con Cascade deck...also theres probably a Mono-white angel or 2 but we hardly see them anymore. So, heres my main deck.

I have no particular reason to use him. Any B/U commander can work in this deck for the most part, but I like Lazav. 4CMC so he hits the field fairly early despite the strict mana requirement; but what makes him my go to is the Hexproof combined with copy-cat. Discard, Mill, Destroy all count. If there's a big threat out, the others usually have to deal with it twice. His presence on the field is enough to prevent opponents from playing powerful creatures whether you have mana to spend or not. Deny an opponent of a powerful/useful creature, use it to your advantage. Turn their threats against them, that's what this deck does. Could I Voltron him? Yes, but personally I don't like playing that style.

The deck plays out primarily in a reactive style, responding to what the opponents are doing and forming strategy as you go. It can be played offensively but needs good board advantage to go aggro. One concern with the deck is that the land base is a little thin, and there's only 3 mana-rocks; so 1v1 match-ups against fast decks isn't ideal and can be weak against swarm-type decks like Sliver and Elves that utilize large numbers of weaker creatures. In group play though, it doesn't matter so much as the deck itself on the surface does not seem very threatening and rarely are you seen as the primary target; but you can quickly change the flow of the game and out of no where lock the board state in your favor to become the aggressor. In head to head match-ups it can perform well if you can avoid the mana-screw. And generally speaking, the stronger you opponent is the better this deck will perform.

So, I've determined that this deck doesn't need Teferi, Mage of Zhalfir and Venser, Shaper Savant. Great cards on their own but synergy with this deck is lacking, I wouldn't really know what to remove. Teferi has the most potential to be added in though.

The Scarab God found his spot in the deck, and I was happy to get him at $9 before the hike from Ixalan.

Speaking of Ixalan, 4 cards added from the set into this deck. Thaumatic Compass  Flip goes in as a land fetcher and provides me with Maze of Ith without limiting my mana pool. Primal Amulet  Flip is a straight upgrade to the deck. Hostage Taker fit's the theme and covers the devotion/body loss I had from 2 other card changes. Finally Dowsing Dagger  Flip, gambling on this one but I think I can manage to flip it if I need it, otherwise I'll drop it for a rock or land fetcher.

Now....how do I get Sakashima's Student in here. I also want to get some sort of graveyard to library option into the deck to protect from mill. I'm looking at maybe Volrath's Stronghold, one of the titans, or someone on the order of Learn from the Past.

Strip Mine replacing Ghost Quarter, I may add Ghost back in as a 3rd LD option.
