Really the only decks that this deck has a problem dealing with game 1 is Merfolk and Unblockables. Merfolk are just too aggressive and get big/unblockable too fast. We survive a little longer against Unblockable decks but if we don’t surveil into what we need, we’re dead in the water.
Thinking about putting in a Hero’s Welcome for some life gain since we create so many tokens/bring back so many creatures from the GY but I don’t know what I would swap for it.. Maybe a Traveler's Amulet? Who knows.
If you’re matched up against control, just play like normal and cast things left and right. Try to burn through their counter spells. If they don’t counter the small creatures, they’ll be getting smacked in the face until they can Cleansing Nova or Ritual of Soot but even then. You’ll likely be able to sneak in Muldrotha via Lazav’s ability. Then from there, it’s GG.
Matching against RDW or any Aggro deck? Same strategy as vs. Control. Just cast your stuff and try to win trades when they attack. Your creatures are expendable, theirs are not. So if you can hold off and flash in a creature that will kill one of theirs when they attack, you will technically be ahead because of the card advantage (and the fact that you didn’t care about your creature anyways).
Playing against Monoblack Zombies or Selesnya Enchantments are my favorite match ups because they’re essentially free wins. Vs Zombies, you can afford to take damage for a couple of turns (just don’t get caught at 3 hp.. they might have the deal 3 gain 3). Then when you feel comfortable, bring out good ol’ Muldrotha and start that token creation! Their Reassembling Skeleton can only make so many zombie tokens from Open the Graves. Selesnya Enchantments is a fun match-up because they don’t know what to do. Let them buff their Novice Knight and just suicide block against it. When you get out Muldrotha they will likely have a Heiromancer’s Cage or equivalent so make sure you have 2 in the graveyard before you bring one back (so you can use the Lazav that’s been locked by Luminous Bonds and get another Muldrotha). If they run the +7/+7 and trample enchantment, just start targeting Plaguecrafter and sacrificing it to itself to make more tokens and clearing their very very VERY small board state. Easy money!
Izzet is nothing to be afraid of. They won’t know what to counter and they’ll waste their burn on your Barrier of Bones which is basically just pouring gasoline on the fire that is this deck. They can’t hit you with drakes because you will have the Sprites early and then have bats to chump block late game. If/ when they drop Niv-Mizzet, Parun play like you would against Selesnya Enchantments. Force them to Sacrifice their board state (which will only be like 3-4 creatures at most).
Anywho! I hope this helped answer any questions about how to play vs certain match-ups! The deck plays basically the same no matter what you’re matched against.
Until next time!
