Congrats on this. I haven't played with Life from the Loam yet so this is a great primer

I loved this - thank you! I posted a lengthy comment on your deck, "Feed the Swarm" (I can't remember how to link decks on TappedOut - sorry!). If you or anyone else feels like taking a look and posting a reply, that would be great! I'm new to the archetype and to modern in general, and am looking for ways to improve my gameplay and sequencing.

Thanks again!

Hello, xzzane pointed me your way after I made this deck: Molten Loam. Could you give me some advice or help me do a complete rehaul of the deck? Your primer has Seismic Assault; is that better than Molten Vortex?

Yes. Ideally you will ditch many lands a turn, and you can't pay for it. In the long run the 2 extra for Seis is much less.

This is written before looking at your deck. Likewise, this primer has not been updated since the spoiling of Molten Vortex.

Personally, I love the card Molten Vortex. As a burn player in modern and legacy, I love the extra turns value that it creates end game. As a loam brewer, I'm not as fond but still give it value as a card. I have not personally done any testing with it, but in Magical Christmas land, where the theory-crafting happens, I see this card being played as a one of aside assault, or taking the full four assault slots. I have never had an easy time getting before turn seven, so the casting cost makes it much easier to get down. It gets hit by the same hate. It costs more to use, but works very well with loam wherein you get to get at least one activation with the mana you used to cast it, potentially more, then you have the other 1-2 lands to play or pitch to something else.

I will be getting my playset of the card once it comes out, and can let you know how it performs over assault when I can. Will post thoughts on your deck on your deck's page.

Okay, i hace played loam deck a lot of time ago. Molten vortex is better than seismic assault. The remand is the best counter in the metagame. Molten vortex spell jumps counters and you can start discarding land forma the start and didnt costa 3 red mana... I tested it and i love it..

DevoidMage I've heard of a lot of people saying Loam Pox will be on the rise with the recent Twin ban and the increase in both Tron and Eldrai, which are land-based decks. What are Loam's bad matchups and is it in a position where it could dominate? Thanks!

So loam is a graveyard based deck, obviously. It gains advantage through using the graveyard as a 2 in the yard is one in the hand deal, where every card that hits the yard is about as good as half of a card in your hand. However, there are decks out there that are a lot better at gaining advantage. Eldrazi not only runs main deck hate for loam, but also pumps out advantage much faster than the loam deck can. It's not a long game matchup. While Twin was a terrible matchup, I don't think that the tradeoff is enough that it will entirely increase our win percentage by more than a few ticks. I am not going to be definitive on anything meta call-wise until after the PT however. It's entirely possible that the whole scene goes jund-shifted and the deck becomes very well positioned. Really it's anyone's game.

Also, I don't think that this archetype will ever dominate the format such as affinity or burn might, but it could definitely hit the tier 2 range if things line up properly. It's a long grindy deck and a lot of players don't like to be this grindy. But realistically only time will tell.

Hey! I took your advice about splashing red, and after looking through some of the other lists, I finally made my own, and its a lot of fun to play with. It has a basic BG Pox shell, with some white for reanimator and red for Faithless Looting and Molten Vortex. Thanks again for giving me some advice and for making thes primer!

DevoidMage,
Ramunap Excavator was just spoiled for Hour of Devastation, and I'd love your thoughts on what that means for Loam.

Ahaha, uhm yeah that card's great. It helps enable not only budget options, but also a lot of new shenanigans between more ghost quarter locks, replaying your cycled lands, and even something janky like Sequestered Stash as a dredge enabler. It's nothing new as we already had Crucible of worlds, but it being a creature makes reanimation strategies more open. Creatures are just generally easier to work with than artifacts, they don't bump goyf unnecessarily, you can interact with them better, they attack. It seems really sweet. It's not game changing, but enables strategies to a lot of new players who couldn't afford crucible.

Recently, I design a 4 color loam deck, that is more midrange-focused than a pox deck.

I don't have very experience with the design of modern deck, and I would like to know your opinion about the deck.
