Check out Sword of the Paruns. It is legit in Krenko decks.

Yep, got it in the maybeboard. The dream is obviously to just go off with that and Mana Echoes. What do you recommend taking out to make room?

cut Lavafume Invoker for it.

Also, Konda's Banner and Champion's Helm are both good options.

Huh, I put in the Invoker because it seemed like an excellent mana sink; but Sword actually serves that role just fine. There's an argument to made for redundancy but that makes a ton of sense. Thanks, I'll try that out!

ComradeJim270, Sorry Zada didn't pan out, but glad to hear everything worked out good anyways!

I see Sharpshooter on your maybe board ... I love the Goblin Bombardment + Goblin Sharpshooter machine gun combo. Especially when the Sharpshooter has a Quietus Spike!

I'd pull the Dragon Fodder for a Sharpshooter; not sure about the Spike.

Also, I'm not a big Reforge the Soul fan because of the group hug aspect. You already have Slate of Ancestry though, so not sure what I'd recommend as a swap ...

Goblin War Strike is almost required in a Krenko deck.

Sorry for the double post but I just noticed that Shared Animosity also wasn't in the deck. Shared Animosity is very strong. Coat of Arms may also be worth considering if you do not normally go up against other tribal decks. It is symmetrical so it can backfire though.

Krenko is a feared commander, because of its explosiveness.

I have a ton of suggestions, but it depends on the sort of game you want to play: casual or competitive? But in short: haste enablers and things that allow you to copy his ability: like Rings of Brighthearth and such . I'd pull the Scour from Existence (too high cmc), and perhaps even one land less..

Feel free to browse around in my Krenko deck (just uploaded it today): My Own Private Mob

Maybe consider Urabrask the Hidden?

@clayperce: I wouldn't consider wheels to be group hug, I consider them card draw in mono-red that also happen to be very annoying for blue mages; maybe they get something good, but it can also cause them to go down cards and lose something they'd really rather not.

Pulling Dragon Fodder for a Sharpshooter seems reasonable. And he combos with Basilisk Collar!

@Gidgetimer: It's there because I don't own a copy right now. I'm going to update this list once I get a good feel for what I want it to look like. Coat of Arms is too dangerous in my meta, but Shared Animosity is a no-brainer.

@GobboE: I'm certainly aware of how menacing Krenko can be; I have no qualms about turning this into a deck that lives up to his fearsome reputation. I'd say "high-end casual" is the goal here so this could get pretty cutthroat. I know Krenko can reliably kill in 4-5 turns but don't think I'm going to make that sort of speed and consistency a goal yet.

I disagree on Scour from Existence: I need any enchantment removal I can get. Without that I only have two cards that can remove them. It's also one of the few answers to indestructible cards other than simply killing their controller.

@AndWelcomeToTheJam: He feels too slow and vulnerable for what he does. I'd rather have cheaper haste enablers or ones that are harder to remove, like Fervor or In the Web of War. The effect on opponents is only relevant some of the time. Against creature-light or combo decks it could just do nothing.

@slovakattack: It also helps other players and costs money I feel could be better spent on other cards. For now, Caged Sun is a poor man's version but has the benefit of only helping me.

ComradeJim270,That's a good point about Reforge the Soul ... I hadn't really thought about how annoying the disruption it causes could be.

A few more thoughts:

  • Looking at the deck again, I noticed the Illusionist's Bracers, and I really like it. Getting two activations off of Krenko per turn = insane, and it makes me look at the Thousand-Year Elixir on your maybeboard and Rings of Brighthearth (as mentioned by GobboE) in a whole different light too.
  • Not that you need more recommendations, but here's another possible angle for Haste-like effects: Winding Canyons or Vedalken Orrery (I especially like the Canyons as it doesn't take a spell slot)
  • Similarly, here's a possible (though janky) angle if you need more permanent removal: A Treason effect like Word of Seizing or even Confusion in the Ranks, then a Telim'Tor's Edict
  • Cuts? Man, I hate cuts! Maybe kill any 4-drops that aren't absolutely amazing, just to smooth the curve a little? Not sure what though, as meta matters. E.g., I'd drop the Leyline of Punishment, but that's just because there's not a lot of lifegain in my group.
  • Along those lines, are there enough people playing red in your group to make the Goblin King reliable? With C15 out, we've had some folks trade in their red for Golgari and Simic colors, and I would probably not run the King without a Blood Moon.

I just had the bracers lying around, glad I've given you something to think about! They also work with several other creatures in the deck. You could even stick them on Burnished Hart to get four mountains. For extra hilarity, I can put them on Moggcatcher or Skirk Prospector for double the value.

Blood Moon is going in the deck for sure, I just haven't gotten one yet. A few people have Grixis, five color and Izzet decks so sometimes it isn't even needed for mountainwalk. Leyline of Punishment is also something that I think I may get some utility out of, but I don't think it's going to do quite as much work here and is more of a sideboard thing (along with Pyroblast and Red Elemental Blast when I get those). The amount of damage the deck is going to do makes it less appealing.

Pretty sure the edict won't work since it says "own" and not "control", but I like the way you think.

November 30, 2015 2:10 p.m.

clayperce says... #14

Yeah, that's (the Bracers, I mean) just so cool!

Hmm. Last I checked, Telim'Tor's Edict says "own or control" ... maybe you have an alternate-art version? :-D

Another janky (but at least cheaper) approach: Liquimetal Coating plus whatever Artifact destruction you have handy. Oh, and Anarchy can take out the white ones at least.

Forkbeard says... #15

A few cards I don't see here that you may want to consider:

  • Goblin War Cry: Nice thematic fit + a potential win-con if you have enough critters out.
  • Mob Justice: Along the lines of Impact Tremors & Massive Raid. Another potential kill card.
  • Roar of the Crowd: See above! Effects like this are clutch in any Krenko deck.
  • Goblin Wizard: Obscure weirdo goblin with decent abilities? Why not!
  • Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker: Arguably the ultimate combo goblin if that's your cup of tea.
  • Hellrider: Swarm synergy!
  • Marton Stromgald: More swarm synergy!
  • Voracious Dragon: Voraciously kill your opponent dead.

  • So there's some food for thought. I run all of these in my own Krenko build and have had great success with all of them. It looks like you're well on your way to building yourself a fun Krenko goblin party, good luck!

Almost forgot: +1 for the Krenko, us mono red Krenko players have to stick together :)

    November 30, 2015 3:09 p.m.

    ComradeJim270 says... #17

@clayperce: You're right, I misread the card! Still too janky, so it's a moot point.

@Forkbeard: Some good suggestions. I'm not sold on some of the sorcery speed stuff or Kiki-Jiki without a combo for him to enable, but Hellrider and Goblin Wizard are strong candidates.

OK, one last thought: Not sure if you're groovin' on Forkbeard's Dragon recommendation, but if so you might also consider ...

I'd prefer to avoid devour if possible because it requires killing a lot of my board state to play something that can just be bounced or destroyed.

    Hey there. Let's talk.

    Suggestions:

    December 17, 2015 10:39 a.m.

    ComradeJim270 says... #21

@TheDevicer: First off, you're awesome. Thanks!

This list is identical to the physical deck I own right now. That's why some of the cards are crap. After the changes (I'm totally down with most of your suggestions) it will not be like the current deck... yet. The ones I'm not sure about are Extraplanar Lens (too risky) and taking out Unstable Obelisk, because enchantments can be very not-nice to this deck and in mono-red I'll take what I can get.

How much actual draw goes in there? Do I go a little short on it and run lots of redundant cards?

    December 18, 2015 1:53 a.m.

    Arvail says... #22

Fair enough. Draw isn't bad. The issue is that you have access to really shitty draw in mono red. It's essentially Mind's Eye, Skullclamp, Slate of Ancestry, Wheel of Fortune, Memory Jar, etc. Your options are generally very limited. That's why cards like Krenko that produce value are so good.

    December 18, 2015 5:39 p.m.

    ComradeJim270 says... #23

Agreed, TheDevicer. One issue right now is there are a lot more cards that want to be in here than there are cards that want to come out. I'm struggling to figure out what makes the cut, and what's simply too inefficient or too cute for a deck that wants to murder the entire table on turn four.

    December 20, 2015 12:18 a.m.

    Arvail says... #24

If you want cuts, I suggest Insurrection as it doesn't fit your normal game plan and it's super unwieldy in your hand. If you're not hitting critical mass with goblins, you're not winning at all. Volcanic Offering is super jank. I mean, maybe you make a deal with someone and you get to deny someone off of a color and kill off two of their dudes, but that's the best case scenario and even that isn't amazing considering the grand scheme your goblins are brewing. I don't think you can afford to sit back at all. Quest for the Goblin Lord's buff is pretty nice and all, but it does nothing for you when you're behind and requires investment. When you do hit critical mass, it's unlikely this thing will even matter that much.

    December 20, 2015 12:36 a.m.

    ComradeJim270 says... #25

Agreed! I made some changes. However, I'm not sure I've gotten everything. There's definitely some combos and some crazy burn I could do to give the deck a bit more reach, and improvements to consistency and speed are important.
