I also strongly recommend a game ender: Brimaz or Hero of bladehold.

Run only 22 lands

The new Ajani Steadfast might be cool, but I know nothing about the deck, so maybe it's bad advice. I just thought the -2 is awesome for this kind of thing. +1ed anyway.

Ok, I'm back from the cruise. What us your local meta exactly? I would take out one land for a 4th path as well.

Little Zoo, Rock, Melira Pod, Affinity, Mortarpod zombies, and a couple of jank decks that range from 8Rack to Black and Green Devotion (not BG, Seperate decks). In my other group, there's 2 RG tron lists, 2 Affinity players, and one kiki pod. This second group doesn't hold competitive events, however, its just for funzies.

That's a snapshot of what I plan on facing.

I prefer Gather the Townsfolk in here because I would prefer the option to race in a number of matches, and running GtF allows me to rely more on Intangible Virtue than Honor the Pure.

I really like the creatureless option that this build provides, and I would prefer to stick to that instead of CCing someone else's build.

I only have the 3 paths that came with the deck right now, but once I get a 4th, I can definitely take out a plains for the 4th.

My B/W tokens deck is Simba, Timon, and Pumba. It's slightly different with more actual creatures and no intangible virtue, but I've tested it to promising results.

Well if there isn't any combo in your meta than tidehollow isn't necessary. Why no Grafdigger's Cage or Mirran Crusader for the pod and devotion matchups? Stony Silence works better than Kataki, War's Wage as well.

Servo_Token says... #9

I'm working on getting a stony to replace one of the katakis, and I just haven't gotten around to acquiring things for the SB yet.

There is a guy who plays all-in twin, but for him I intend to side in 2x Suture Priest . I believe that I need to be updating the SB for what I have right now.

In terms of dealing with twin, Batwing Brume and Torpor Orb are better than Suture Priest . I would replace all kataki with stony as well.

Engineered Explosives in the sb can be very good against Little Zoo and Affinity.

Add Thoughtseize if you can, hand disruption is huge in modern and helps so much. Good luck at PTQ

Really liking this deck, I do have one suggestion though...

I would bring your Path to Exile count to 4. Lets look at everything good it hits:

Melira, Sylvok Outcast : looks like the pod player isn't comboing off anytime soon.

Deceiver Exarch right before a combo: They just used a twin on a combo creature and you killed it. You might as well think of that as a 100 for 1.

Tarmogoyf : A huge creature that will most likely be a huge threat to your little 1/1 weenies.

Celestial Colonnade : The control player will probably have a counterspell, but if they don't you just killed a 4/4 Flying Vigilance. Not only that, but it was also a land (and control needs every lands possible) and the opponent spent 5 mana to let their land die.

Those are all the BIG threats, but think about everything else you could do to screw the opponent. Hope this helps!

P.S. I completely understand if you don't, but I happen to be going to my first PTQ as well very soon, and would love some feedback! If you decide to check it out, thanks very much and if you don't, understandable.

Okay... My REAL suggestion for the deck...

Im pretty sure it was at the 2013 World Championship, maybe Pro Tour Born of the Gods, but I saw Craig Wescoe Trying out something super cute. Squadron Hawk .

I really like the idea of running the hawk. Its a 1/1 flyer that gets all his buddies into your hand as well. The main reason im suggesting it though Is because its an annoying 1/1 flyer your opponent has to deal with, but not only that. With Honor of the Pure and Sorin, Lord of Innistrad you hawks can get huger. They become 2/2 flying for 2 or maybe even 4/3 flying for 2 mana. I like this card as a 4 of card.

Sorin, Lord of Innistrad is also one of the most powerful cards in your deck list. Play him, -2, make your guys HUGE!!! I would bring his count up to 2.

This is a weird suggestion, but possible Triplicate Spirits ? You're tapped out, but have like 10 tokens out, just tap 6 and get 3 tokens. And with all your buffs they are probably bigger than just 1/1. Maybe as a 2 or 3 of?

Those are my weird suggestions. Sorry to spam comments, im just such an idiot that I cant read anything XD.

I have nothing against Craig Wescoe's style, it works for him, but do not add Triplicate Spirits . Terrible card for b/w tokens.

Oh yeah, I have one other suggestion, this on lands...

I would run more basics. You have to expect Path to Exile being used on stuff you own as well, and if you have no basics left in your deck, then they just used a removal spell that costs only W.

But then again, there aren't too many creatures the opponent wouldn't run removing anyway, so I actually don't know. I would still run some more basics anyway just so you have some colored sources that are for sure coming in untapped.

xzzane says... #21

He has enough basic lands. Temple of Silence needs to go immediately though.

Thanks for the comments, even if they were a bit misguided. lol. I initially thought of Squadron Hawk , but decided against it on the basis of Intangible Virtue being a better card. I was torn between hawk and Gather the Townsfolk , and decided to go with the townsfolk because the tokens seem to be a bigger benefit. I also dabbled with Triplicate Spirits , and figured out that it was pretty much just terrible. At best it was a 5th copy of Spectral Procession that caused me to tap three guys. It just isn't worth it.

xzzane

I have Temple of Silence in there as a filler while I wait on my Fetid Heath . I ordered them like 2 weeks ago and they still aren't here though, so I might need to find a replacement for those in the mean time for this weekend. Any suggestions (budget preferred, just for the sake of ease of finding them)?

July 22, 2014 4:35 p.m.

xzzane says... #23

Even a basic land is better than a Temple of Silence in modern. Also, have 4 Path to Exile and take out the 1 Doom Blade . Eventually you really should replace Gather the Townsfolk with Tidehollow Sculler as well.

all 4 windbrisk heights might be overkill. ive heard a bunch of really serious token guys on here say that 6 anthems is usually too much as well (last conversation i remember reading had 5 as the agreed upon extreme). the reflecting pool im guessing is just there to get people to stop giving you guff about running the scry land. probably not needed though, really the key function is to hit the land drops when you need them on t2 or t3 or something. 2 plains and a reflecting pool a t1 thoughtsieze does not make. not sure what to do about all those spaces i just mentioned though. the best cards you took out from the event deck that (id hope) you didnt trade away would be the sculler and the sword. seeing Tidehollow Sculler dismissed really is not a happy day, but then again, if you introduce him as your lone creature, it makes his (seriously awesome!) job nigh impossible because all of that creature removal they dont want to waste on tokens is just going to go straight at him. the sword is probably more defensible in this setup, but youd have to play dozens and hundreds of games before you had a real clear feel of that particular slot.

i personally really really prefer Dismember to Doom Blade , and i find Vault of the Archangel so backbreaking in this setup as to be worth 2x sometimes, drawing two vaults is way less of a problem than 2 sorins or something, whereas doubling the propensity for it to have a game-changing effect is obviously the goal. conversely, i questioned the 4x windbrisk: the risk with 4x on it at times can be the risky potential to draw into too many 'comes into play tapped' lands, thus slowing you down and preventing you from getting up enough momentum to even activate one of them.

and lastly, one fun thing to keep in mind about your PTQ adventure is to make a note of how and what sideboard cards worked well AGAINST you. right now your sideboard setup is basically 'step 1' sideboarding, but sometimes, effective competitive sideboarding techniques can include a presupposition of whats going to get boarded in against you, so when you board, you can continue to stay a step ahead by boarding against their expected board moves.

UPDATE:

Removed 1x Honor of the Pure , 1x Windbrisk Heights , 3x Gather the Townsfolk

Added 1x Swamp , 1x Raven's Crime , 3x Tidehollow Sculler

Based on test results and the overwhelming amount of recommendations to do so, I have dropped the 6th anthem and the townsfolk. I am currently trying out Raven's Crime as a repeatable advantage engine for longer games, because I really only need 5 lands out max. Doom Blade is staying as my 4th Path for the time being.
