This is my favorite deck to play. It's essentially a deck that only has fun if everyone else is miserable. It's an attrition style deck named so after the card. The deck prides itself in being versatile and using some lesser known cards. First let's discuss the general:
Liliana, Heretical Healer
. She is an excellent, multi purpose general and not the least of which is because she is a planeswalker. A 2/3 lifelinker for 1BB that flips so easily and gives herself a blocker is a great start. She then can make everyone miserable by forcing discards. Her -x is a handy way to retrieve utility creatures that abound, such as the sac outlets, essentially painlessly. Her ult tends to make a table scoop once they realize creatures can never die anymore and endlessly return to your control. All in all she offers the deck a lot of things black loves to do and is a less scary general than folks give her credit for.
So what does this deck want to do? Well first you want to make people miserable by making them discard cards with things like herself,
Mindslicer
, etc while fueling an absolutely ridiculous card in EDH:
Waste Not
. Lily alone is often enough to make the table groan as hand discard is beloved by players. Discard has changed its value and view to me as it is black's way of dealing with nettlesome cards it otherwise cannot touch or at least not easily. It's proactive removal which this deck has in spades. I'm not going to bother listing all of the creature kill at its disposal but will note that
Nevinyrral's Disk
,
Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre
, and
Gate to Phyrexia
are its only way to handle artifacts/enchantments besides forcing deals out of opponents.
The basic idea is to make people miserable and what better way to do that then
Grave Pact
or
Dictate of Erebos
+ Sac outlet(
Viscera Seer
or
Carrion Feeder
among others) + a creature with a second, third, twelfth, endless lease on the afterlife like
Gravecrawler
,
Reassembling Skeleton
, or
Relentless Dead
. This trifecta forms what I term the b*tch fodder of the deck and makes it tick. The fourth and special member is
Veilborn Ghoul
who does a Squee impersonation and is the hand fodder to make ours absolutely painless.
The deck runs a lot of card draw because not only is it good but discarding a card every turn quickly takes a toll on your hand too. The nearly never seen
Sea Gate Wreckage
is highly underrated imo. It's black so the card draw hurts so there is life gain to restore that.
Sangromancer
generates ungodly amounts of life by herself but many other ways such as
Kokusho, the Evening Star
or
Miren, the Moaning Well
can be found to keep you out of the grave yourself.
The deck has some resurrection for general utility but it's not a cheat big things into play deck; this wants a long, grueling game. The deck has far more resurrection of little ones off of Lily or by themselves than just an Entomb + Reanimate Sheoldred aggressive style. For that end this deck isn't as hosed by grave hate unless you get greedy. I run multiple versions to stop those selfsame strategies or things like Past in Flames.
Bojuka Bog
is rather meh but
Agent of Erebos
can force rage quits while
Withered Wretch
does a fantastic, weaker Scavenging Ooze impersonation.
Beyond that the only other thing worth really noting is the Sac outlets such as
High Market
(the number one target for Exploration Map),
Miren, the Moaning Well
which has you go more all in but nets far more life gain,
Yahenni, Undying Partisan
which can be a blow out but sadly is not a legal target for Lily due to the odd "non-legendary" stipulation. If she was a legal target she'd be choice number one almost every time. These are key to keeping creatures you value in your yard and not exiled as well as flipping Lily and triggering a bunch of other things.
Now the deck's win cons. It doesn't have a lot. It doesn't need a lot.
1:
Mikaeus, the Unhallowed
+
Triskelion
affectionately called Mike and Trike which, if uninterrupted, leads to infinite damage however you choose ie GG.
2:
Gray Merchant of Asphodel
aka Gary can siphon enough life from wounded foes or with a heavy board state regardless of that fact and win. Also a great reanimation target.
Kokusho, the Evening Star
is Gary #2.
3:
Aetherflux Reservoir
can be life gain or a cannon as
Gravecrawler
casts so a storm-like chain can be formed to fire up the cannon. Same thing works for
Bontu's Monument
,
Plague Belcher
and
Crypt Ghast
.
4: Death by a thousand cuts. Lots of creatures and cleared boards and some big beaters can make this a win con albeit it can be slow enough it bites you in the butt.
Synergies: These won't win necessarily but strong interactions worth noting.
1:
Razaketh, the Foulblooded
+
Reassembling Skeleton
is infinte, instant speed Diabolic Intents for those who wish to have them. Not a win on its own but can well acquire a win easily enough lol.
2:
Sidisi, Undead Vizier
+
Ever After
is a low way to keep bringing things back as she can exploit herself if in lieu of a sac outlet to then grab Ever After again.
So that's the deck in short. It's a slightly thematic(Liliana herself and BDSM FemDom) deck that makes everyone miserable except you. Just how it should be. It's highly resilient and a boatload of fun so if you have affordable suggestions to add (like I'd love
Diamond Valley
but it costs more than this deck) then I'd love to hear them! This deck is ever changing and the more input I get the better imo!
