You could always go with THE budget Mikaeus deck :)

Is there a reason why the Food Chain Tazri lists are only running elvish spirit guide, not simian? I know the ideal deck isn't running red, but it's still fast mana. Also, would Tinder Wall be a good addition?

Ssg would probably be fine but it's just not really necessary. You prioritize things that can be fed to food chain and neither SSG or Tinder Wall can. Since they are essentially producing colorless, there just isn't really anything worth cutting for them. That said, I'm sure they would be fine. You're kind of on the margins here.

Only one Spirit Guide effect is really needed, and of the two ESG costs $1 less.

@p0megranates Having a hatebear like Teeg in the command zone is incredibly relevant, especially since he shuts off a fair amount of win conditions. And while dying to Rift and Deluge is a thing, he's easily re-castable and can buy you time until you assemble a lock or combo. Shutting off the other wraths is no joke either.

Yup. Just because it's actually possible to deal with a card doesn't necessarily make playing under its influence pleasant. Teeg's no joke.

A question, why is Jeleva a Tier 1 commander? I was talking to my other friends and they say that she isn't tier 1 at all

Paepurr Look to her decklist in the Tier 1 section. She was used as a General of a Grixis Strom List, that can consistently win by turn 2-6, with a good pilot behind the deck. She by her self, with a build arround deck isn't Tier 1.

December 14, 2016 2:33 p.m.

She was t1 for grixis. Not sure if she was demoted due to yidris filling in for storm. Very consistent and was the best general at the time so she was put there.

Is Tasigur higher than damia because of his resilience with delve? or his ability?

December 14, 2016 3:54 p.m.

Reveur says... #12

Lunarcaster Damia is a pure control shell. Tasigur provide a automatic win condition if you generate infinity mana in any color out of several combo's.

Than you win thanks to endless casts and recasts from Reality Shift, that remove your opponents whole library, Beast Within, that make the face-down cards on the field to 3/3 Beast Tokens, and Blue Sun's Zenith.

What makes Tasigur so good is, that any Combo-Card he play's is a good card, while you play, and can be in any zone, when you go off with endless mana. - and his resilience thanks to delve.

merrowMania says... #13

Tasigur is higher because he wins the game when you get infinite mana. You mill your library and get all your non-land cards back. From there, you kill your opponents.

Speaking of Tasigur, now that Commander 2016 has been out for a month, what's the verdict on him? It's blatantly clear that Thrasios, Triton Hero + Tymna the Weaver, Silas Renn, Seeker Adept, or any other Partner that grants Black is almost strictly better. Should Tasigur be demoted?

More importantly, should Thrasios himself be promoted? Currently he's sitting indecisively in Tier 2 while we wait for a good solution for Partner rankings to magically emerge. I'm still a strong advocate of placing Thrasios in Tier 1 with the hover-over note "When paired with Tymna". (At first I wanted to put "When paired with a Black Partner", but the more I read, the more racist it sounded). Gigi demonstrated that such hover-over messages were possible by attaching a test line to Jeleva.

What are everyone's thoughts on both moves?

I think the solution would be to find out which partner is best for each partner and rank them that way.

merrowMania says... #16

MagicalHacker - The problem with that is that we would still not have all possible commanders represented. Maybe we could list the best ones here, and have a link to a list for the rest of the combinations. Then we could leave the optimal pairings here with hover-over messages to depict the pairings. The only problem I see happening from this is determining what qualifies as the 'best' partner for each one. There is bound to be overlap, and therefore overlap in strategies due to color combinations (i.e. Tymna is best with Thrasios, but it is basically an optimized Thrasios deck.)

My head hurts, and I'm not even a main contributor to this page.

December 15, 2016 12:25 p.m.

Is there a way to make just a spreadsheet for all partner combinations and have it is public read only access and just create a section for those in the description? A 2d grid of all possibilities might work for readability but idk.

It is possible to publish things to Google Docs like this.

A large issue with this list is that it is constrained by being a deck made on TO. Decklists simply weren't intended for this purpose, so we're missing tons of elements that would help create a better list.

I'd like to say that I don't think we should demote either Tasigur or Jeleva.

Yes, Thrasios + Tymna is Tasigur plus white, and Yidris is Grixis storm plus green, but here's the thing: The release of these new commanders has not made Grixis Storm or Tasigur any less powerful or capable of competing with the rest of Tier 1.

Think about the last time we demoted commanders out of T1. We moved down Sharuum and Narset (any others? can't remember) because the Partial Paris change made these decks less consistent and viable with their high density of high CMC cards. That was a rule change that negatively impacted the performance of particular decks.

Another reason I could see a T1 deck being moved down would be if some commander staple were printed that was a silver bullet for that deck's particular strategy, and negatively affected that deck's performance at competitive levels of play.

In this case however, no negative impact has been cast on either Tasigur or Grixis Storm. Just because the last commander set released cards that can be viewed as "strictly better" than these two decks does not mean that they themselves have gotten any worse. Tasigur is still an infinite mana sink. is one of the strongest color identities in commander. Nothing has really changed other than player's who like that style of play getting a new option.

I do think Thrasios should be in T1, with the hover-over as a temporary measure perhaps; I'm just trying to say that there's room enough in Tier 1 for these guys to coexist.

Partner Pairs Listing

It's got every partner combo sorted by color identity in the description.

I'd intended to write a short blurb about the viability of each combo and give that combination a tier ranking, but I've been kind of busy.

When it's finished it could be incorporated into this list as part of the description at some point, or just serve as a complimentary resource.

If anyone wants to contribute you can hit me up here or on my profile page.

this list really needs to be updated in description. I think the most updated optimized lists we have so far are Lilbrudder's Double Trouble and mtgThaen's Breya, Etherium Shaper. Not sure if we have a more optimized list yet.
