Stranglehold definitely needs to be in my deck. As for Ruination, I feel like BM is overall the better card in my deck seeing as I can get evasion with some Mountainwalk, plus I keep Cavern (and less importantly, but still important Nykthos).
Feel free to make suggestions for more optimality out of my deck Dunadain, ay.lobo, and/or NarejED. All of the cards in my deck are explained as to their significance, but I'd love to see all of your sides.
Purph's tier placement seems alright. I think he's placed right about where he needs to be. Tier 2 works as well, but he isn't as consistently a turn 2-4 win like the others. If he was played more competitively, maybe he would be valued closer to that second tier, but being in a mono-colored deck (that also leans heavy on its commander) limits its potential/resilience.

NarejED, thank you for the quick response. (Also, thank you Dunadain for the props!) It does seem initially that our decks run similarly. However, note that freakingShane has quite a goblin theme to it, and mine focuses with other creatures that create tokens. I do have a higher curve, but that is mostly due to having Blasphemous Act and draw power which throws the CMC count off. All in all, myself and freakingShane have chosen different ways to represent Purphoros.
There is a good point for more artifact destruction. I am considering Vandalblast, however I do NOT think that Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx should be included in a Purphoros deck, mostly for the fact that I do not want a devotion high enough for the Commander to become a creature (more susceptible to removal by cards like Path to Exile or even Hellion Eruption).
Hmm, can't do much about that tier placement. Haha, just wanted to have a discussion on his placing. Whichever ways it goes, he just can't be underestimated. I figure it wouldn't hurt to see how my deck compares here, since it's been a bit popular lately.

I agree, ay.lobo, our decks do run similarly. Purph helms straightforward token creation very well, as your deck proves.
I chose the goblin tribal because I can still go very wide if necessary, but I can also can build up with anthems and the likes. Both are powerful strategies, and Purphoros shouldn't be underestimated. ;)
I'd love to see more competitive Purphoros builds to more accurately see how those decks fair against the higher tiers, but until then, second tier/2.5 seems fitting.

Wow i just noticed that only 3 of the top 25 commanders do not have either blue or black in their color identity that is insane, and two of those three are mono green.

welcome to edh! though I feel the competitive side of the format is a little healthier than people suppose.
blue and black have good, low CMC card that increase consistency, in other 4-of 60 card format it's not as necessary.
Mono green on the other hand has crazy ramp, so good that two decks can actually accelerate fast enough to keep up with the hyper efficient decks, one with crazy ramp and draw (selvala) and another through increasing it's consistency to mitigate the downside of losing UB (Yisan)

question reasked since I dont see an answer above:
quick question for partners, do we build for optimal partner chosen or do we build using that commander alone? i'm going to start kydele soon (surprised it wasnt already done) and need that cleared up before I start. Long list of t3 commanders without lists and whatnot
Not as important but can we get zedruu it's own bulletpoint? my small bit of CDO is killing me (you dont have to though). Thanks.

Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet at tier 4? I don't really agree with that assessment. I play him as my commander and he does all of the things I want to do.

I too can't agree with Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet being tier 4. I also run him as a commander and he is fairly powerful.

chaosumbreon87, I need to update the partner pairs list to work with the .5 tiers, but if you have a particular partner combo or partner solo list link it in the comments over there and I'll get it up in the description at some point. I've been busy with school lately and haven't had time to devote to this stuff.
For example lists here, build with whatever partner you think makes the best deck (probably Kydele + Tymna, I'd think).

I myself am not sure of the best combination as ive been brewing mostly from the t3 commanders up and kydele and 6 others are appearantly there. So I was wondering if we were going best for that commander at the spotlight + whatever partner is best, or if we were going for best pair.
For example, I was going to try kydele and thrasios first as kydele points to infinite mana galore and thrasios is a pretty good mana sink. That would be best for him as a commander. As a pair, it would probably be kydele+tymna since I could just take a preexisting HD shell and add a bit of tax/infinite mana variety. In that case, ill start at some point.
Also its fine that you havent really ben up here. I tend to do much of my building when I get enough inspiration where the deck is supposed to go.
Benisbadatmagic, MTGApprentice2016 - by all means if you want to see a commander promoted, link over an optimized decklist for review. it tends to hold more weight than words. if you want to collaborate, by all means. Someone here will review and give direction for further optimization. who knows, maybe a promotion is in order.

why is Sliver Queen Higher up than Sliver Overlord?

Archwizard says... #16
HaunterHunter A mana sink / combo piece as a commander is better than a tutor for a sliver as commander. This question has been asked several times already.
April 2, 2017 6:11 p.m.
@HaunterHunter Sliver Overlord is probably better for causual sliver decks (he is insane) but Sliver Queen is a nasty infinite combo with Mana Echoes, so decks based around her don't necessarily need many slivers just tutors for Mana Echoes, control, and maybe a back up combo (with or without the queen)
I made two decks out of her http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/24-01-17-sliver-queen-combo

I have a pretty good Seton, Krosan Protector deck, that might be a good link for this list?

I'd argue that Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet is tier 2+. I have a guy in my play group that runs a mono black Kalitas Stax deck, that is amazing. I don't have a card list for you. But I'm sure you could imgine a list with all the black tutors, best black cards/ best artifact stax cards. Along with the best mana rocks while useing Kalitas as a mini engine in the deck. That can just one hit you if your not paying attention.
April 3, 2017 5:07 p.m.
LTmiller, We already have a list for Seton that's pretty damn good (even if it could be improved by Paradox Engine), and while your deck looks nice, your curve is a bit high for cEDH standards (even for a ramp deck), and you're lacking a lot of the infinite combos that let Seton win on turn 4 or 5. Specifically, a lot of your 3 and 4 mana creatures could be dropped to give the list breathing room, since most don't really have worthwhile effects.
I'm sure you made decisions based on what works well for you IRL, and your deck probably plays great, and I'm glad your deck is popular, but cobblepott's is better from a competitive standpoint as far as I can tell.
TranscendingAll, Mono-Black as a color identity has no reliable way to get rid of either artifacts or enchantments (Rest in Peace will destroy Kalitas for instance), so stax or no stax, the only way a Mono-Black commander is going to break out of T3 is if they're super-duper fast (Sidisi) or super-duper consistent (Mikaeus).
...Aaaand as typed that I realized Mikaeus has already been demoted to T3, I forget when that happened. Point extra made, I guess.

This is probably too early but new set commander things:
hazoret- tier 4. Seriously purphoros is better and does nothing by himself
kefnet- tier 4. possibly tier 3 but I cant reason out the upside to his ability yet.
temmet- low tier 3/tier 4. decent colors but aggo tokens in these colors is not the best. Unsure if his embalm token counts toward commander damage but he seems fine.
Thoughts? if these are the gods so far then i'm really disappointed.

merrowMania says... #23
I agree with you about Kefnet, but I think Hazoret and Temmet should be Tier 5. Hazoret's activated ability is the only relevant part, and it is constrained by mana and not worth the card invested. The restriction for attacking means he is a creature when you have no gas whatsoever, and is basically a stupid beater without trample. Temmet is like Geist, except instead of Hexproof (which at least allows a Polymorph plan), there is conditional unblockable, which is too slow to aggro someone. Embalm does not contribute to commander damage, as Commander-ness is an aspect of the actual card(s), not sometthing that can be bestowed.

All things considered, the list seems about on par with the currently linked Purphoros deck, at least at first glance. freakingShane's deck has a slightly lower curve (2.75 vs 2.97), but he's missing a few cards that are definitely worth running that you have like Ruination and Stranglehold. The latter goes both ways though. Shane's inclusion of Vandalblast, Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx, and a few other cards not in your list, makes a lot of sense. Perhaps you and he could put your minds together to try for the optimal Purphoros build?
As for Purph's status in Tier 2.5, I polled a lot of competitive players over on the cEDH Discord, as well as on here. The general consensus seemed to be that he was a bit too slow/single-minded/easily stopped for true tier 2, so he was moved down. Though to be fair, he sees very little competitive play, so it's possible that he's being undervalued. That's the case for a good chunk of the commanders in the tier list: Not enough data for concrete placement.
