Thoughts of moving Kruphix, God of Horizons down to Tier 3? He lost his main enable and namesake Prophet of Kruphix, severely hurting his power.

March 1, 2016 11:37 p.m.

Seems weird that one card being banned could affect Kruphix's tier placement when there are other ways to assemble that effect. Seedborn Muse is worse than Prophet but doesn't hurt mana production and can untap rocks. Prophet wasn't even good enough for competitive tuned lists and most decent decks can deal with it within a turn cycle. If Kruphix needed Prophet to be considered tier 2 then she shouldn't have been tier 2 in the first place.

I guess the question is; what does Kruphix, God of Horizons bring to the table that lets it set up an unbeatable board state by turn 5? Its abilities aren't particularly game changing. The only notable advantage that Kruphix has over Momir Vig, Simic Visionary is that it's harder to remove. I'll admit that I have a hard time seeing how the two of them could be in the same tier. Between the two, I would always take Momir Vig, Simic Visionary for the consistency that his tutor ability provides.

It shouldn't be terribly difficult to understand. Often when a deck's best card is banned, it takes a severe hit. Bloom Titan in modern. When Summer Bloom was banned, the deck went from dominating the format to being competitively unplayable. Often a deck's viability can ride on a single card. Commander being a 100-card singleton format, the loss of a single spell isn't as crippling as it is in a 60-card format. Still, Prophet was undeniably one of the strongest cards in Kruphix, who was already rather weak for Tier 2 to begin with. With its loss, there isn't much reason to play him.

So I've been thinking, how come Anafenza, the Foremost got moved down?

She is a 4/4 for three mana. Sure it's three different colors but if these decks are considered optimized mana fixing should not be an issue.

She makes weenies slightly strong. This ability is kind of weak. But with certain cards, such as Hardened Scales, that single counter just became two. She has decent synergy with Devoted Druid, Mindless Automaton, Gyre Sage, Ordeal of Nylea, Wild Beastmaster, and Champion of Lambholt.

But the real ability that sets her strength level, whenever a creature card enters a graveyard exile. While it misses out on tokens, this shuts down (Creature) graveyard decks. The graveyard is just an extension of your hand and she is taking that away from all your opponents. Not only that but if she's been sticking on the field (hard yes, but boots and Asceticism type cards can help. Can't be shroud though) she makes Living Death a board wipe for everyone but you. She is in Abzan colors so the deck can support everything Karador, Ghost Chieftain does, such as the Boonweaver Giant combo. All the while nerfing any deck trying to play the same archetype. She supports a graveyard recursion deck with some control aspects.

I am not saying we move her up but I'm more just curious as to why she got moved down. People agreed but nobody really said as to why they thought that.

March 2, 2016 5:11 p.m.

.....None of that actually sounds particularly strong. Randomly having your general be a hoser for some strategies isn't what I would call either reliable, proactive, or even game-winning, necessarily.

The reason any Karador, Ghost Chieftain Boonweaver combo deck would normally beat out any such similar deck with Anafenza, the Foremost is that Karador provides a reliable amount of consistency and redundancy versus control-oriented strategies. Sure, Anafenza does away with this completely, but, then, Anafenza isn't countering any spells, now, is she? And don't exactly feel like building up to a massive Living Death is a game plan worthy of tier two, even with the help that it gets from Anafenza's replacement effect.

My two cents.

March 2, 2016 11:16 p.m.

Ugh. Typos.

And Karador provides a reliable amount of consistency and redundancy to the combo, to put a finer point on it.

March 2, 2016 11:32 p.m.

Anafenza is lower than Karador and Teneb because they actively contribute to the combos in their colors, whereas Anafenza does not. 1/1 counter synergies and random graveyard hosing isn't good enough to elevate Anafenza to the level of the top tier Abzan generals.

As others have said, Anafenza does have a lot of abilities, but none of them are terrible useful. She's essentially a hate bear against animator in the command one (one that only hoses creatures, and only creatures that entered the graveyard after she resolved). There's a reason there's only one hate bear in Tier 2+. Gaddock Teeg hates out a ton of cards, and strategies and even he is right at the bottom of Tier 2.

Aside from her color identity, Anafenza doesn't have a whole lot going for her. As others have said, while Karador and Teneb are broken monstrosities, and even Ghave is powerful, Anafenza contributes very little to Abzan EDH.

Jeez, remind me to never try posting after 2 AM again. That last post of mine was absolutely riddled with typos.

"As others have said, Anafenza does have a lot of abilities, but none of them are terribly useful. She's essentially a hate bear against reanimator jammed into the command zone (one that only hoses creatures, and only creatures that entered the graveyard after she resolves). There's a reason there's only one hate bear in Tier 2+. Gaddock Teeg hates out a ton of cards and strategies, and even he is right at the bottom of Tier 2.

Aside from her color identity, Anafenza doesn't have a whole lot going for her. As others mentioned, while Karador and Teneb are broken monstrosities, and even Ghave is powerful, Anafenza contributes very little to Abzan EDH."

Fixed. Hopefully some day they add a comment editing option for everyone.

Glad to see that you're human, Narej. Heh.

Still working on developing an optimized Daxos 2.0 list--and it's certainly proving to be more difficult than I first imagined. Null Profusion is definitely not a card that I am considering, however. There's a reason it costs five cents. I'd sooner play Yawgmoth's Agenda or Oath of Lim-Dul--and, no, I'm not going to play those two, either. It's a rough life, being a black enchantment that isn't Necropotence.

March 3, 2016 3:30 a.m.

Alright, here's what I have. I've written up something of a primer for it, but it obviously doesn't go into extreme depth about things. I'm still not quite sure if this elevates him to a tier two position, but, then, I also don't think that I've hit every nail on the head, especially since I haven't done any testing just yet, but regardless, this is it:

Can I get an explanation as to why Niv-Mizzet, Dracogenius is below Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind?

March 3, 2016 7:24 a.m.

Lilbrudder says... #14

I believe the firemind is easier to combo with. He can kill several opponents just with Curiosity.

March 3, 2016 7:46 a.m.

Why is Ojutai, Soul of Winter Tier Three I get that he has a mini frost breath on a stick put he doesn't seem that good even if you have access to counter spells

March 3, 2016 9:53 a.m.

irisfibers says... #16

I agree about Ojutai, Soul of Winter it should be moved down to tier 4. Between the colors and having a hexproof, flying general Dragonlord Ojutai should stay in tier 3 however.

How come Karn, Silver Golem is not Tier 1, or at least Tier 2?

i dont run this list so i dont know why hes not tier1 ;)

no tbh i dont think he deserves a "tier1" tag in general. hes awesome, strong, fast, comboheavy and has a ton of flavour but hes just no sydri or memnarch.

No, I was just tagging you to get your 2 cents since you run him and I don't. :) I just wanted to make sure he was getting a fair shot haha

We discussed Karn at length before the last comment sweep. The verdict was that he would be a T2 commander, if he had access to a color, but without any color specific cards, it's impossible to combo off consistently enough or to reliably remove or disrupt other T2 strategies. Therefore: T3, still really powerful in a casual setting, but not powerful enough to hold its own in a competitive environment.

Okay! Thanks for the explanation! :)

March 4, 2016 12:17 a.m.

Since Teneb and Karador essential have access to the same combo, couldn't they be considered the same Tier? Yes, Karador is a stronger commander, but if Teneb can bring out the win con at the same speed, why is it a tier lower?

March 4, 2016 3:15 a.m.

Didgeridooda says... #23

Because Karador is the stronger commander.

March 4, 2016 8:51 a.m.

So you're saying, if two commanders in the same colors, when used, both give out consistent turn 4 wins, because one has a higher level, the other is instantly demoted to Tier 2?

March 4, 2016 9:01 a.m.

Didgeridooda says... #25

Teneb, the Harvester is combat damage reliant. That is a big time down fall to the ability.
