How come Yuriko is high powered?

Seems slow and having to use bad cards.

Would like to see a high power list if available

@Shadow02

Not unlike Najeela, her tribal appeal isn’t worth the opportunity cost of going “real” tribal.

Deck having her at the helm usually want to make her single triggers count, providing cheap evasive creatures (eg Slither Blade ) and possibly a way to bounce her back to the hand so she can be played again for the trigger. She can get rolling with a lucky shot or two for a time warp effect (or not so lucky with Mystical Tutor and the like). And if she can get through, Doomsday or Insidious Dreams for stack of extra turn spells usually can go for the game.

Basically think of her as a somewhat weaker dimir Edric, Spymaster of Trest ; evasive combat dmg for extra turns and value.

Now, IMO she isn’t just another Edric. It would be a stretch to call Edric strictly better, but I think he is significantly better. Green also compliments blue better than black here by getting Edric the needed pieces to combat stax, recur extra turns spells and the ramp necessary to cast 5+cmc spells by t3-4. Black provides tutors and some creature removal, but I don’t imagine it living up to what green offers here. Also, Edeic is less complicated to milk for advantage. Re-playing Yuriko would require constant mana expenses to keep things rolling and hence would slow you down. Also, she digs slower than Edric. I didn’t test optimized competitive Yuriko, but without tutors to go for Doomsday or Dreams, she seems far slower and far less explosive than Edric.

However she clearly can do more than mid-power generals. With a tutor (which black has) and an open opponent, she can end the game without passing the turn (in one turn effectively). She can get rolling as early as t2 consistently, requiring only an attacker and UB mana. Finally, she has a clear wincon and a value engine sitting in the command tone, making the deck run smoothly off of her alone if need be.

High power seems to be the place for decks that can be badass outside cEDH and decks that can pull cEDH strategies similar to those of their more competitive peers, but not with the efficiency it would take for them to be widely considered “competitive”. And Yuriko compared to Edric seems to fit the latter description perfectly.

(Disclaimer; I don’t play cEDH. I keep my ear to the ground and I play as powerful decks as my budget allows. But I don’t have the budget or the people needed to play cEDH regularly. However I did try to build Yuriko and I’ve been playing and studying Edric for about a year. Written up there are my thoughts on the 2 that came up as the result. If my “references” aren’t enough for you, you’re free to ignore everything I wrote. I just wanted to share my 2 cents on something I was asking myself 6 months ago)

Yuriko is best as an "anti-meta" stax/control deck imo; not a turns deck resembling Edric.

Running cards like Slither Blade over Mausoleum Wanderer is a mistake unless ALL opponents in your meta consistently block flyers.

If not tier 1 like it was explained, what’s preventing Karador from being tier 2 at least? The deck just seems better than tier 2

Better than tier 3* for the end part of my sentence

@MagickedOne

If you think he should be tier 2, providing a competitive list alongside some reasoning and/or relevant playtesting data would be nice. This way any discussion is more fruitful and only the best ideas get into the spotlight.

Is it just me or has the general quality of discussion here went down in the last few months?

I’m not a cEDH player, but keeping tabs on cEDH has helped me a lot bc non-cEDH crowd isn’t as meticulous as you guys and a lot of things I hear from cEDH community can be translated at least somewhat to non-cEDH. But lately I’ve seen very little spice and/or good discussion on the said spice. I’m not calling out anyone, I’m just curious

The Boonweaver Karador deck is the decks best build and is quite known so I assumed a list wasn’t needed since even new players at my lgs knows of that combo. My only personal tech to Karador is Mindslicer so I can strip everyone of their hands so none of my moves can be responded to next turn

@ JohnnyCRO

I think most of the good in-depth cEDH discussion is mostly done on discord. Much people who do decided to post doesn't do much research before posting, therefore lowering the quality of the topics on the page. Personally it is also due to the meta as well, there isn't a large enough shift as is pretty stable atm. The most recent spicy brew I heard about is the Divergent combo, a friend of mines built the deck and been testing it out for the past couple of weeks.

Just my two cents :P

@ CyborgAeon I seen that one once the deck was posted as well as when Smothering Tithe was spoiled! I picked my foiled one when it was $4 and I never regretted it :P

Godo, Bandit Warlord finished in final pod of another cEDH tournament.

Please move him up to the Competitive Tier where he belongs.

March 25, 2019 1:25 p.m.

In the last two major online tournaments, Godo has been in the final table. I personally knocked all the Gitrog and Najeela decks out of the tournament, so they didn't even place.

I’ve always had a soft spot for Godo. I’d probably advocate for a move up at the next update

I'm a little curious about some of the T1/T2 distinctions; specifically, I am curious about T1 commanders whose primary strategy is to achieve infinite mana via Food Chain, for example, and then cast a commander who then achieves a win condition, such as Tazri - my question is, I suppose, since Tazri isn't even relevant until you have the infinite assembled then why would she be better than any other commander who wins immediately when infinite mana is achieved, such as Tasigur? I get that having access to all 5 colors seems powerful, but the lack of White and Red isn't exactly a huge detriment, given their lack of power and personally I feel going over 3 colors tends to give diminishing returns as far as streamlining your resources - Sultai can do everything 5-Color can with a laughably simpler mana base AND has access to the same win conditions as the majority of the T1 decks. Tasigur [as my primary example] can not only accommodate the best combos, but is also relevant in the command zone throughout the game as a value engine should the primary strategy be disrupted. I mean, if 5 Colors is that relevant why isn't Sliver Overlord on even the T2 list? He literally assembles a win the same way Tazri does; in fact, you could play literally the same deck with only a few minor changes to flip out the relevant allies for slivers. Oona mills the table with infinite mana, not terribly difficult to assemble in Dimir even without Green. Pretty sure Breya does, as well. And Prossh really only needs to find Food Chain itself, he doesn't even need Squee or Eternal Scourge.

As an aside, I wanted to note that I take issue with the suggestion of proxying - it took a me LONG time and effort to assemble a binder with every EDH staple in it, sans a few >$500 cards. I DO support checklisting, and feel it should be separate from proxying if you are willing and able to make the real cards available at the table during the game, but if you're going to sit down with the intent of playing the most optimal strategy/deck possible, at least put the effort in to acquire the cards themselves - otherwise you devalue the achievement and effort those of us who DID get the cards put into it.

MadMage Food Chain mana cannot be used to activate abilities, which is why you can't effectively play Food Chain Tasigur or Sliver Overlord.

Tazri overshadows the other Food Chain options (Prossh, Maelstrom Wanderer, Tishana), mostly on the back of color-identity. Non-Food-Chain infinite mana has to compete with Thrasios as top dog; he isn't able to utilize Food Chain combo. If he were able to, Tazri would not occupy as high of a spot on this list.

ShaperSavant says... #20

Addendum: Sidisi, Brood Tyrant can also be played as Food Chain combo. However, it's very reliant on the graveyard and requires extra pieces like Narcomeba and Dread Return. Tazri can combo through grave hate and doesn't require extra resources to win beyond what Food Chain is able to generate.

Wasn’t Selvala Heart of the Wilds in the Maximum Power category? Did she get bumped down or am I just remembering it wrong? If so, why’d she get bumped down? She seems pretty consistent to me.

March 27, 2019 5:39 p.m.

She was never in Maximum Power in this iteration of the list. Maybe she was at the top when other people were maintaining it, but she's always been in Competitive since we took over.

Hey could someone explain to me why yisan the wanderer bard is better than prime speaker vannifar? I mean sacking the creature is pretty easy and it chains up for free? Maybe that people could just kill the big creature, but not if you chain in one turn?
