Edric can, but he's essentially a heftily upgraded Azami.

Yes! I forgot about Edric. He is definitely worthy of tier 1. Damia and Azami are pretenders in his wake to be perfectly blunt. His ability is insane, he is 3cc (which is huge), and in great colors. He can lock people out of the game at least a half at turn on average quicker than both Damia or Azami.

As for Meren, I may be biased against her due to playing against her alot. I have honeslty never seen Meren win a game. What does she bring to the table worthy of tier 1? I dont think she is close to the best midrange creature combo deck. Does she do great with stax?

In other news, I saw that we were still missing a list for Oona, so I went ahead and brewed one up. It's essentially UB storm with Doomsday as the primary win condition. Suggestions welcome.

Lilbrudder: I woudn't call Damia or Azami "pretenders". They are completely different archetypes to Edric. As for your question about Meren, even a suboptimal meren deck can be disgusting when it comes to stax builds. The recursion engine she provides is super powerful.

NarejED: there's also this Oona build: Apocalypse Project which is fairly solid.

NarejED Clearly you misunderstand most of my meta and didn't look at my list very carefully considering the deck runs both Cyclonic Rift and Mox Diamond. There actually just so happens to be an entire comment dedicated to why I don't run Patron Wizard in the comment section of my deck list. The reason that I don't run those cheaper CMC counters over Cryptic Command is because cryptic is one of the two cards in the deck that I can use to stop one person from completely bashing me in the face with all their creatures and it also can serve the purpose as a counter and as draw (I highly value its versatility). As for Trickbind, it is one of those extremely useful cards that people tend to overlook. In my meta it is definitely worth running. Stifle and Trickbind accomplish some tasks that cannot be accomplished by regular counter magic. As for not running a Mana Crypt, that's simply because I haven't had the money yet, but it will be added shortly. The reason I run both Star Compass and Silver Myr is because this deck is built to ramp out Azami, Lady of Scrolls as fast as I possibly can. I play against a lot of green and red players at my LGS and getting rocks out is important. I basically guarantee myself a T2 Azami when I go land, Sol Ring, insert any 2 mana rock that taps for blue here. Even without a turn 1 Sol Ring, rocks that tap for blue are extremely valuable to the deck regardless. They give me an edge by a turn or two to get Azami, Lady of Scrolls going. Back to Basics isn't very valuable in my meta even though I have considered it before. It feels like it will generally do more harm to me than good (I run quite a few valuable non-basics). I run Ponder and Preordain because they allow me to filter through my deck and allow me to fix any doubts of T1 mana issues (basically insurance for the early game and late game they allow me to dig). The extra turn spells are what really make this deck shine. I tend to cast and extra turn spell, draw a bunch of cards, cast another extra turn spell, and I just keep chaining these extra turns til' I win. I get the most value from them by using Snapcaster Mage and Archaeomancer. So really this deck likes to drop Azami ASAP and then play extra turn spells til' I get my win con. This all happens quite quickly considering the amount of rocks I run. Hope I answered all the questions.

It does. Thanks, but I don't think your Azami build is what we're looking for.

Archwizard says... #8

NarejED I know you're looking for a deck that runs all the "normal" or "most played" cards, but I can bet you they don't run nearly as quickly or efficiently as this list, which is only missing Mana Crypt, Temporal Manipulation, and Capture of Jingzhou. I humbly respect your opinion, but you're not gonna find that "perfect" list. Azami has a lot of diversity when it comes to wizard choices and build paths are really determined by your meta or play style for the deck. Thank you for the consideration though.

NarejED says... #9

We're primarily trying to link decks that can be used by players in any meta, meaning that builds heavily tailored to a specific meta aren't quite as lucrative. You mentioned that a fair number of cards you're running are in because of the group you regularly play with.

June 12, 2016 11:41 p.m.

Archwizard says... #10

Really not sure what you mean by my deck is "heavily tailored". You're one of the only people I've heard who has questioned Ponder and Preordain. Both cards are used in lots of builds on EDHREC when building Azami and tons of other mono blue commanders. As for the multitude of rocks I run that's the style of the "extra turn tribal" way of building the deck. Really the only super popular card I don't run is Patron Wizard and the only cards people sometimes question are, Stifle and Trickbind. Which they fail to realize are really good in just about any match up. So really this deck is pretty standard for a combo centered way of playing Azami. You're probably just not used to it (just sayin')

Minor tweaks again!

  • I'll rewrite the tier 2 description. At the time of the description's writing, tier 2 was in turmoil, people recommending x general being demoted and y general being promoted left and right. Now that things have settled down a bit, I'll look at the generals and do a write up.

  • AzamiLadyofScrolls: Couldn't help but notice that in one post you say "Clearly you misunderstand most of my meta" and "I play against a lot of green and red players at my LGS and getting rocks out is important," then turn around and say that your deck isn't tailored to your meta. Since you have a few changes in your deck that fight your meta's threats, it's just not the type of deck that this list needs. Not everyone has your meta, and people coming to the tierlist won't want to see a deck that runs a few things specifically to your meta. This is supposed to be a general list, and if a newer player enters and sees, "Ooh! Star Compass!" they might think that most Azami lists should run it (as they are led to believe by the description), which is untrue. (This is not a criticism of your deck choices, it's just a re-clarification of this list's philosophy.) Additionally, most decks built on a budget aren't as competitive as their unlimited counterparts, which is why I haven't suggested my personal Yisan list.

  • ShaperSavant made this Oona list as a black-splashing version of High Tide. Pretty cool, but probably not the one we're looking for. Just a deck to note.

  • If I forgot to state it, my opinion is that Azami and Damia should both be moved to tier 2.

I'll comment later with an updated tier 2 description.

@ PurphorosGodoftheForge - We have two other forums where you should be asking that instead of here.

Modern Forum

Modern Deck Help Forum

Also we have a very long Modern discussion thread that may be suitable for this type of question here.

You could also use the official card database here. In the filters for the advanced search you want to use these settings:

Format - Modern
Text - "when Enters Untap"
Type (NOT) = "Creature" "Planeswalker" and probably "Sorcery"
CMC <= 2

What you are looking for doesn't exist in modern as a 2 drop. You want either Intruder Alarm or Freed from the Real. The first works of ETB the second works off of tap/untap and mana generation.

Late again (as always... sorry for this guyz), but on the Azami and Damia cases, I already moved them down tier 2 because I think that is their place. They are both really great (as many other generals in tier 2) and are in the top of tier 2, though.

Also, we have no decklist for Edric... Would this one work?

Hey guys, so i'm looking to build a new deck. My current generals are Teferi, Temporal Archmage, Purphoros, God of the Forge, Saffi Eriksdotter, and Azusa, Lost but Seeking.

However, as you can see from my decks, i'm missing black. And that's a problem, as I love playing black in EDH. Anyway, I recently traded for a Kresh, the Bloodbraided as I had heard he was halfway decent and a fun deck to play (and I was looking to build a strong casual deck)... but I just haven't been able to build a list i'm happy with. So i've decided to scrap him and build something else. I'm currently looking at Prossh, Skyraider of Kher, Maelstrom Wanderer or The Mimeoplasm.

Are there any good primers/lists that you guys know of that I could do some research on? I've only played against Prossh like twice, I'm fairly sure I can build a halfway decent Maelstrom Wanderer list on my own (but it would require me to disassemble some of my other decks which wouldn't be ideal), and i've never even seen a Mimeoplasm deck in action. Would really appreciate some feedback/advice on the pros/cons of these generals.

Edit: Oh, and I am looking for competitive lists. I can downgrade them as I see fit to fit my playgroup, but i'd like to start from the top. If there are any decks that just like, define a general at it's best, i'd love to look at them.

kyuuri117, if you really want a fun casual commander for a play group, I highly recommend Tasigur, the Golden Fang. He has good color combinations, nice and versatile, and is really political. With some selective exile cards and an ally, he can be a blast to play.

June 14, 2016 4:15 p.m.

kyuuri117 says... #18

Wee_Dragonaut The issue with Tasigur is that if I play him, my friends are going to assume i've built a broken combo deck, regardless of how i've actually built the deck... so I might as well play him as a broken combo deck.

kyuuri117 With a spread like that I think it would be best to narrow down what type of deck you want to play.

Personally I LOVE the way Sidisi plays but I wonder if that's the novelty of it being my newest deck.

B has plenty of options, stax builds, token builds, combo, control, etc.

@kyuuri117: Most of the Tier 1 and 2 commanders have optimized decklists. Scroll up to the description and click the "Tier 1 Lists" dropdown to find Prossh and Mimeoplasm.

Speaking of decklists, it looks like Shaper has an optimized Riku storm deck, and we're still in need of a Riku deck. http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/riku-of-infinite-reflections-06-03-14-1/

Looks like Shattergang, Marath, and Oona were never added.

Finally, I found a much better Grenzo build. It's actually optimized for multiplayer matches, vs the current French build. http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/grenzos-doomsday-plans/

I have a question. on most of the teir 1 decklists I have seen that you use 32 lands. Why that number? I was just wondering cause I am a little afraid to go that low.

June 15, 2016 3:22 p.m.

NarejED says... #24

32 is just about the lowest you can still safely go in EDH without having to mulligan at least once on average. Some decks that run an extremely high density of ramp and/or have an especially low curve (Derevi, Zur, Meren) can go a bit lower-- usually to 30. 32 is a nice starting number though.

It's more important to look at all your mana sources rather than just your land count. For example, Brago only runs 30 lands. However, he runs an additional 17 cards with CMC 2 or less that tap for mana or tutor to find other sources, bringing his total to 47.
