@NarejED yeah, but when you use those cards you intend to win the game that turn and usually you won't need the mana from my experience. IMO its better to run things to help the combo. I'll be testing it out a lot though.

More importantly for gitrog is noose constrictor b/c it serves as a second copy of Wild Mongrel in addition to our already known Putrid Imp, Skirge Familiar and Patchwork Gnomes

Stunning Regrowth is huge for Titania, pretty good in big Omnath too. Now if we can just get a Jund-colored "lands matter" general.....

Karador and Sidisi are both probably going to use it to close out games faster as well.

This has been a really interesting set so far.

While not relevant for tier 1 and 2 Sigarda's aid is a massive upgrade to equipment using generals like zurgo. It actually makes worldslayer somewhat playable. Flash in Worldslayer after Zurgo Helmsmasher swings on an undefended opponent gg

I think krenko should be tier 2 or 1 since its ability to summon tokens are on par with prossh, exponential in fact.

Prossh is not just a a token generator...

Krenko is not nearly on the same level as prossh. Prossh wins the turn he comes down. Krenko requires haste enablers and a way to untap him to do that sort of thing, while prossh needs only Food Chain - something like Purphoros, God of the Forge is just icing on his cake.

TO be fair I've gone off T3 with Krenko before on multiple occasions.

That being said, Prossh is more resilient and can do a lot more to find combo pieces.

@Lilbrudder - Zurgo has been able to do similar stuff to what you described for a while. He's been able to cheat equipment into play at instant speed with Stoneforge Mystic, equip for 0 with Puresteel Paladin, equip at instant speed with Leonin Shikari, and all three with Stonehewer Giant, which also pulls it out of the library. Sigarda's Aid (or sigarda's blessing or whatever it's called, I've seen conflicting translations on this) will certainly make Zurgo decks better, but I doubt it'll move him up a whole tier.

@damrod4 - What you forget is that Prossh has several big advantages over Krenko, the most notable one being his color identity. Mono-red is very limited in terms of what it can do. Its tutors aren't great (except Goblin tutors, which are fine in Krenko but limit the deck in other ways that I'll explain later), it doesn't interact with enchantments well, and it struggles with card advantage other than draw7s. Prossh having a Jund color identity is able to cover all of these weaknesses - Black has the best tutors in the format and Green has the best creature tutors; Green has excellent enchantment removal (Deglamer, Krosan Grip, Reclamation Sage, Acidic Slime, Bane of Progress, etc.); and being black gives Prossh access to the most balanced draw spells in the format, Ad Nauseam and Necropotence.

The other advantages Prossh has over Krenko - and these are arguably bigger advantages than color identity, even though you could consider them a subset of it - is how much easier it is for Prossh to get his combo win going than Krenko and how varied he can be in his alternate win conditions. First let's examine what pieces Krenko needs to go infinite:

  1. 1. Krenko, Mob Boss
  2. 2. Sac outlet (Skirk Prospector, Goblin Sledder, Goblin Bombardment, Phyrexian Altar, Thermopod)
  3. 3. Thornbite Staff or Sword of the Paruns+Skirk Prospector/Thermopod/Phyrexian Altar
  4. 4. A haste giver if you want to do all this as soon as you play Krenko (Goblin Warchief, Goblin Chieftain, Hellraiser Goblin, Fervor, Mass Hysteria, etc. I'm not listing them all because there's like 30)
  5. 5. Finisher (Goblin Sharpshooter, Siege-Gang Commander, Goblin Bombardment, anything haste giver)

There's also a combo line where you can use a haste giver, a sac outlet that produces red mana, and Krenko to go infinite if you have enough goblins in play, but if you have that many goblins in play you probably don't need to go infinite to win.

Anyway, on that list you probably noticed that several of the items were in bold. That's because these are the combo pieces that Krenko can tutor for reliably (i.e. Not with Gamble). Notice how Thornbite Staff and Sword of the Paruns aren't in bold? That's a big problem. Krenko can't grab these cards easily without running high mana cost stuff like Ring of Three Wishes or Planar Portal, both of which are very far above its desired curve. Even with the goblin tutors, there are only 4 - Goblin Matron, Goblin Recruiter, Imperial Recruiter, and Moggcatcher. Goblin Recruiter is the most reliable since he almost always grabs Goblin Ringleader and 4 other goblins, but you still need Thornbite Staff/Sword of the Paruns/etc. which can't be tutored for with these cards. So at the end of the day, you're running a deck with 4 tutors that can't grab all the pieces you need. Even with lots of redundant parts, that's not nearly enough to be consistent.

Now let's look at Prossh's combo pieces:

  1. 1. Prossh, Skyraider of Kher
  2. 2. Something that is a sacrifice outlet and produces enough mana to replay Prossh (Food Chain, a combination of Ashnod's Altar and Phyrexian Altar and Earthcraft, Phyrexian Altar+Treasonous Ogre+Blood Artist)
  3. 3. Finisher (Blood Artist, Purphoros, God of the Forge, Goblin Bombardment, any haste outlet, etc.)

Just like with the Krenko combo pieces, I bolded everything that Prossh can easily tutor for. Notice how every combo piece is in bold? That's because black can tutor for anything, and there are enough tutors available to it that having to use multiple tutors for multiple pieces isn't an issue.

So Prossh has more consistent ways of tutoring for the main combo kill, but what about the alternate win conditions? Well let's start with Krenko. What's the easiest alternate combo kill for Krenko? Mono-red has a couple of infinite combos, but the easiest ones for Krenko to tutor for are probably the ones built around Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker since Kiki-Jiki is a goblin and thus can be tutored for easily. So what's the easiest combo with Kiki-Jiki? Zealous Conscripts of course. But how can you tutor for Zealous Conscripts? It's not a goblin and it has more than 2 power so Imperial Recruiter can't grab it. There are other combos with Kiki-Jiki in mono-red, but Kiki-Jiki+Conscripts is the only one that requires 2 pieces. Everything else requires a third piece, usually Thornbite Staff. The best you can do is the Kiki-Jiki+Lightning Crafter+sac outlet combo since it's an all-Goblin combo (as long as your sac outlet is Skirk Prospector or Goblin Sledder) and can be tutored for with Goblin Recruiter. It has the same problem as a lot of other combos in the deck though - only 4 cards total can tutor for each piece. Let's compare this to Prossh's alternate win conditions. I'm not going to list every infinite combo in Jund colors because there are like a million of them, but the point of it is that Prossh can grab them all easily between its black and green tutor suite.

At the end of the day, Krenko decks are pretty much always on the aggro plan with a combo finish that they can occasionally draw into, whereas Prossh can combo more consistently, resist hate more easily, and be more diverse in construction. Krenko has a lot of explosive potential and nobody is denying that, but consistency is the most important thing a deck can have in a singleton format, and Prossh has a lot more of it.

Just a few things missed about Krenko combos but you covered most of the important bits.

Mana Echoes for mana and Umbral Mantle for untaps.

Another 2 card combo is Dualcaster Mage and Twinflame/Heat Shimmer. (Granted that requires at least 1 creature in play to point the first Twinflame/Heat Shimmer but eh.)

Also, I found Jar of Eyeballs to be an all star.

When going infinite it's a tutor that you can stack your deck with. Tutor out a wheel, stack the top with your finishers, good game.

Both commanders can use it.

(FYI I'm not saying Krenko is as strong as prossh, just adding more from my experience)

I knew there was probably a Krenko combo that involved Mana Echoes I just couldn't think of it. Mana Echoes is such a busted card lol.

And Dualcaster Mage+Twinflame is a two card combo, but is suffers from the same problem as other two card combos I mentioned - you can tutor for one piece (Dualcaster Mage is searchable with Imperial Recruiter), but not the other. Still, thank you for pointing this combo out.

Jar of Eyeballs is a nice find, but do you ever find it to be a sort of win-more card? It seems like if you already have a sac outlet while you're comboing off then you don't need anything else.

Thanks for pointing all this stuff out. I don't play Krenko myself and have almost no experience playing against it, so a lot of this stuff is unknown for me beyond the general gameplan and basic win combos.

Ohthenoises says... #12

Jar of Eyeballs only needs, on average, 20 things to die and you can tutor anything and kill the table (Fireball works even). It's win-more when you have a finisher in hand but it's Demonic Tutor if you don't.

It can also stack your deck to put finishers on the top if you get countered.

It can also tutor out stuff like Pyroblast to protect the finisher.

Gates88 says... #13

Fair enough, but I think that we can both agree that the best way to use Jar of Eyeballs is to stack all your lands on the bottom of your deck and kill with Goblin Charbelcher. ;)

I am aware of all that. I played Equipment Zurgo and have used all those cards. I agree it will not move him up a tier, which is sad, because he is such a perfect fit for his archetype and color scheme, but those creature based options you mentioned die to boardwipes, which is kind of Zurgo's thing. Moreover you can never have too many free equip cards in an equipment deck Sigarda's whatever is a massive upgrade over Leonin Shikari , which has often underwhelmed in my experience. It is an auto-include card for any equipment deck since it checks so many boxes.

A little bit late, sorry for that, I had troubles in my life I needed to deal with (actually my girlfriend left me and it was a hard time...) but now I am back! I will try to read all the comments before wiping, but maybe I am going to miss some, so don't worry I will try to update everything correctly.

I will also add the new legends according to what I think for now until we move them:

  • Ishkanah, Grafwidow tier 4 nice tribal we all wanted but not particularly powerful or strong enough for tier 3 IMO

  • Gisela, the Broken Blade tier 4 she seems really strong but I feel her optimized deck would be something like voltron and we all know how voltron commanders are ranked on this list ;P

  • Bruna, the Fading Light tier 3 reanimating any human or angel can be strong enough, there are particularly good targets available and I could see a mono-white reanimator. Include the oter angel for bonus points

  • Emrakul, the Promised End tier 5 Kozilek, Butcher of Truth is by far the strongest eldrazi commander, and this one I think is weaker than both Ulamogs... As a colorless player I think tier 5, but maybe a stretch for tier 4...?

  • Gisa and Geralf tier 3 I think this is the best legend we got in this set. Remembers me of Karador, but in other colors and for zombie tribal. Still, many zombies are worth reanimating, and sacrificing is good with zombies so you often have targets to cast.

  • Ulrich of the Krallenhorde tier 5... I hope we will get a better werewolf legend, seriously...

July 9, 2016 5:05 p.m.

@thegigibeast agree entirely with these

except Ishkanah, Grafwidow shes clearly tier 1 material. outraces zur anyday.

prossh combo? spiders.

Sharuum engine? spiders.

One thing that came to mind when looking at Bruna is Angel of Glory's Rise.

Humans tribal, some kind of mill effect like altar or something, cast Bruna, reanimate Glory's and the your whole grave comes a calling.

Not enough to do anything more tier wise but it's a nice interaction.

Now that I think about it.... Proper deck construction could make this infinite mana possibly. Phyrexian/ashnod's altar + Bruna + Angel of Glory's Rise + a critical mass of humans/tokens?

July 9, 2016 10:25 p.m. Edited.

i might considering making a bad version of Balthor around that, Ohthenoises. Just gotta use it with Altar of Dementia and there we go!

Okay, after searching for an hour, I think I've finally figured a mono-white Angel of Glory's Rise infinite combo that kills all opponents:

Needed pieces on field: none.
Needed pieces in graveyard: Angel of Glory's Rise, Banisher Priest, Auriok Survivors, Demonmail Hauberk, Mortarpod, and Piston Sledge. (There may be another combo involving using Mirror Entity X=0 to sacrifice all your creatures, but the equipment wincon made the above situation more reachable.)Needed commander: New Bruna.

Another option would be to use infinite mana via an Auriok Salvagers combo:

Needed cards on field: none.
Needed pieces in graveyard: Auriok Salvagers, Lotus Bloom, Magma Mine/Scroll of Avacyn/Sunbeam Spellbomb.
Needed commander: New Bruna.

I guess both could go in the deck for resilience?

MagicalHacker says... #24

Oh I thought of one that uses Mirror Entity:

Needed cards on field: none.
Needed cards in graveyard: Karmic Guide, Angel of Glory's Rise, Fiend Hunter, Banisher Priest, Mirror Entity, and Inquisitor Exarch.
Needed commander: New Bruna.
