In Crackling Doom's defense I got to say it helps remove Emrakul, the Aeons Torn as well as removing Aura-Hexproof without needing to resort to boardwipe. Some decks run maybe two board-wipe, but I run a four of Crackling Doom because it works as a kill spell without hindering my side of the battlefield.

How about Seal of Primordium?

Why run Crackling Doom when you can just run Liliana of the Veil?

Crackling Doom always hits their biggest guy. Still, don't think its worth inclusion right now.

Against Abzan? Wilt-Leaf Liege is the answer. Especially if you have Kitchen Finks.

Deathmark is still very strong, and I'd certainly include it for general sideboard purposes.

Sorry-not-sorry, but I'm not going to check all the comments to see if this card was mentioned:

Monastery Siege. Hoses burn, won me some games at the SCG Open, playing with Mono U Tron

It's a pseudo-Leyline of Sanctity. Maybe better.

It's called Control+F Manapanda. Monastery Siege isn't a staple however. But you are right in that it hoses burn. Like really badly. I never even considered that. What's everyone else's thoughts on it?

Wow, as a burn player, Monastery Siege is one card I don't want to face. The Dragon mode is nasty.

I think Thalia, Guardian of Thraben is a better card being able to effect more spells and being able to be played faster. Not to mention when facing competitive burn they're likely to have taken half your life already by turn three. I guess it should be considered if you're not running white and your deck can make use of both the options.

Just want to mention that Monastery Siege doesn't hurt the user if he or she is a control player like Thalia, Guardian of Thraben would.

Monastery Siege is gas. Some Twin and Scapeshift players are maindecking it. Definite include.

Bro Feed the Clan is coming up.

We MAY see Deathmark come in, but that's uncertain.

Feed the Clan? For Abzan against burn? I guess it works. Odd though. Would have expected Kor Firewalker or Leyline of Sanctity instead.

March 3, 2015 4:31 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #18

Leyline is a bit all-or-nothing.

Firewalker is just 1 life per spell - slightly too slow.

Feed the Clan has CRAZY synergy with goyf, rhino, taz.

March 3, 2015 4:59 p.m.

The standard is Timely Reinforcements. Kor Firewalker is really hard to cast without killing yourself, and Leyline is inconsistent as Chief said. Feed the Clan is gas.

This is the first time I've ever seen a life gain spell get used. Like, wasn't it a modern rule that you never put in spells that just say "you gain x life"?

March 3, 2015 6:30 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #21

Yeh it was but then burn basically folds to you gaining more than 3 lightning bolts worth of life.

March 3, 2015 6:31 p.m.

@Femme_Fatale

It was a Magic rule. Burn in Modern is the only exception.

I've found Hide/Seek to be a solid sideboard card, for decks with colors that can support it anyway. It is especially nice for control decks, as they can deal with indestructible artifacts/enchantments, and remove that singleton Emrakul, the Aeons Torn that tends to give them trouble in the tron matchup. The nice thing about it is that you can just search without naming a card, and remove whatever you feel will be most troublesome.
