Livonya aggresses without committing to a board

Commander / EDH Bracket 1 RG (Gruul)

NoOneOfConsequence

This is 100% a pure Vorthos deck; winning games is a tertiary consideration in its design.

The initial inspiration for building this deck was my love of the uniqueness of Ball Lightning; how it iterates on Lightning Bolt in such an interesting fashion by essentially shaping it into a creature. Thus, I built this deck through a very esoteric process of trying to feel out more creative ways to use green and red mana, aesthetically. I didn't want any spell I was casting to feel like I was conjuring something that already exists from somewhere, instead, I wanted it to feel more like I'm actually shaping the basic elements of the mana itself into certain forms. Thus, Ball Lightning, Groundbreaker, Thundermare, Timbermare, Lightning Serpent; stuff that feels like I'm actually creating the creatures themselves from the mana I'm spending to cast them, as opposed to the usual MTG flavor of 'summoning' said creatures with that mana.

Accordingly, I wanted to express more creativity with that direct creation out of mana, which found expression with said creatures as well as in only playing the stellar-themed burn spells Starstorm, Comet Storm, Meteor Shower, Meteor Storm, and Red Sun's Zenith instead of your usual fire-or-lightning themed burn spells.

Not every spell or creature in the deck is like this, but many of them are. The ones who aren't try to follow another theme the deck has of being the 'unholy' parties possibly referenced by the 'unholy alliances' phrase in Livonya's flavor text; aesthetically, lore-wise, and perhaps play-wise 'nastier' green-red creatures like Stigma Lasher, Spawnwrithe, Hateflayer, Spinal Villain, a number of Hellions, and the planeswalkers Sarkhan Vol, Chandra Nalaar, and Garruk Wildspeaker.

As for how the game plays, I'm finding that it's leaning towards something of a group slug strategy, perhaps with the unique distinction of not really committing many permanents to the board, despite being an aggro deck. Many of our creatures do not like to stick around for very long, and many of our noncreature spells are instants or sorceries. Play one of our EoT sacrifice or Echo creatures, damage opponents, sac them to a Momentous Fall or Greater Good before we have to sacrifice them to their triggers to keep the gas flowing for the next turn. Due to controlling few or no nonland permanents like this, we can probably accomplish asymmetrical board wipes if we need to.

Presently, the deck isn't very powerful, but that sounds like a solid game plan to me, so the deck could probably be upgraded to at least some definite extent in that direction without sacrificing all these deep themes too much.

I'll be updating this from time to time. It's really captured my attention.

Addendum: I also built this deck with the restriction of it being Pre-EDH legal; I'd likely be playing a number of other cards if that weren't so. Further, I like to imagine that the swords Livonya is dual-wielding are somehow enchanted with meteor magic to where they cause meteoric explosions on impact, and that's what we're seeing happening in her art to the guy she's killing, but, alas, no meteor-themed equipment is legal in Pre-EDH, so I can't capitalize on that idea in the deck so much. Womp womp.
