That's awesome that we're running similar lists, ThatJunkMage! I've been finding that Riddle of Lightning and Steam Augury are easily the weakest cards in the deck. Riddle is great when you can find an Ugin or Dig to hit them with, but that's also given that you want the Ugin or Dig. I often find myself hopping to hit for so much, but it rarely happens. It'll be cut once I find a replacement.

Other than fueling delve, Steam Augury is just as you said - fine but lackluster.

I notice that you're not running an Ugin, is there a lot of removal in your meta for him? I've also been looking at splashing black since my Keranos and Digs probably won't be here for Friday. What are your thoughts on adding a Tas and an Angler or two? Support the land base with a few Deltas, a Swamp, and change out some of the lifegain lands for ones that include black?

The black is weird. I feel like it's an awesome backup plan, but in the same vein I feel like it's distracting from what the deck wants to do. I definitely wouldn't add too much black because you're going to be fighting over your own graveyard with the delve spells. I've found that the deck could really use an Ultimate Price or two though, so you'd be best to tinker with the splash.

I don't personally have an Ugin, and as much as I love using it I don't really want to buy one strictly for this deck. I also see so much GB DenMistProtractor, therefore seeing a lot of Hero's Downfalls, and I don't want that to be a useful card in the slightest. Pearl Lake Ancient also helps me recover by bouncing my life lands.

For the black splash, I was thinking of removing 1-2 Digs, 2 Augurys, and 2 Riddles for a Tas, 2 Anglers, and 2-3 removal spells. That also means I can tweak the sideboard. What do you think of that?

Ah yeah I only got one because he also fits into my modern UTron list. I'm hoping this does well in my meta, it's been performing well on Trice, but that is far from a good indicator. Mainboarding a PLA sounds like fun, and I completely blanked on bouncing lifegain lands. That's a good call.

Above someone suggested Peak Eruption. Thoughts? I think it'll end up being a meta call, but sorcery speed turns me off from it. Also considering Twin Bolt. Too bad we don't have Electrolyze, hah.

I would rather pay the 1 mana to scry with Magma Jet than play Twin Bolt. The scry is very powerful for digging into the right spot. The bolt is ok if you play red decks every day, but outside of super aggression, it is kind of very bad it doesn't kill any of the major aggro contenders save Rabblemaster, so getting a two for one off of it right now is a pipe dream.

Peak eruption is meh, again only really useful if you play red all day every day. I don't like it.

The black splash seems solid. Would cut Treasure Cruise and Disdainful Stroke before dig though, it's just too good.

June 15, 2015 7:38 p.m.

I agree. Twin Bolt is sideboard material at most.

True. TC has been mediocre in this deck. I would always prefer to Dig. Meh, that means I really have to go find them haha, I need to go find my fourth.

Hmm. Since it looks like my Keranos isn't showing up before Friday, how do you think I can work around that?

Prognostic Sphinx, Tromokratis, Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver are all decent enough finishers in a pinch.

June 15, 2015 7:50 p.m.

Hmm, I'm sure I can pick up one of the first two before Friday.. Thanks!

How have you been finding the matchups? I just went against a very good Bant heroic deck and got hammered. Any suggestions for that matchup?

June 15, 2015 8:13 p.m.

Servo_Token says... #8

Heroic is super rough. basically you just have to get the right draw and get lucky. Burn their dudes when they're tapped out, if you can. Counter their card draw, then just jam a fatty and hope he can block.

As for other matchups, i've just been playing the deck by ear, i've only been at it about a week myself, so yeah. I'll let you know how it goes on friday though, if ya like.

June 15, 2015 8:25 p.m.

Yeah, it was probably the worst two games I've played. They're fast and have resilient creatures, unlike RDW which is just fast. I can Anger them.

That would be great. I'm going to use this week to test the Grixis version and see how it goes. I'll let you know how it turns out as well.

Thought about Melek, Izzet Paragon could work with these burns

June 19, 2015 8:45 a.m.

@ makke -- Nope. Not Standard legal. Even if it was, it easily dies to removal / lacks evasion and costs too much to just die.

Went 2-2 tonight, losses to Bant Heroic because Dromoka's Command is quite the card, taking out Keranos, and to Jeskai Tempo because 3 Mantis Riders is too many mantis riders when you can't hit anger. You have any luck?

June 20, 2015 12:54 a.m.

@ ThatJunkMage - I went 2-2 as well! I was able to pick up a Keranos before it started, but only had one Dig to work with. That wasn't that much of a big deal, though.

First match was Mardu aggro, which was pretty easy. Disdainful Stroke was great to take out their Regents. I went 2-1, lost the game where he was able to land a single Regent. The two games I won ended with me at 27 life.

Second match was B/R dash, which wasn't too hard because my burn could take out his dash creatures and counter magic dealt with bigger threats. Went 2-0

Third match was against the judge who was running RDW, and according to him the Massachusetts meta is control heavy, so his deck was even more tuned to beat me. Soap might as well have been on the ground for me, went 0-2.

Fourth match was another Mardu aggro. He had some really well timed Seizes, taking out my Disdainful Strokes and letting Regents hit the field. Went 1-2

My thoughts for the night: my meta is creature heavy. Out of 20 people or so, I believe there was only one other control list, Esper Dragons. Magma Jet was a monster. 3/4 decks I played against ran sets of Thunderbreak Regent, which is easy to counter but a huge problem if he lands. I think I might main an AEtherspouts and side a second. Also trying to figure out how to deal with RDW, I'm thinking Circle of Flame which hits most things except Swiftspear. I didn't run Steam Augury and didn't miss it one bit.

check out my version its modern but only cost 50$ roughly n is a beast its urW it has 20 counters sum burn n myth realized n is def possible in standard if you tweak it.... my version plays boros charm n valorous stance to deal with abrupt decay n seige rhino bc of abzan'jund being so dominant in modern

June 20, 2015 6:32 p.m.

@ benski -- I'm not inclined to check out a deck that isn't the same format as mine, isn't linked, and you didn't bother to really comment on my list. Checking out your list will not help mine due to the format difference. I appreciate the post, but at least link it so I don't have to go digging :)

I'm new to tapd out so thats why I didn't link it n as far as the list goes it seems very tight as far as tempo goes I myself have been not playing magic since the days of psychatog n have no real understanding of the current standard meta\ state.... Being an older player returning I was drawn to modern but when I saw Simone else using mindswipe I juss figured I'd post what I posted thinking u could click my name and view my decklists I honestly kiss use this site to play test prior to purchasing

oh man. well, if you did the comment tutorial, [ [jeskai juss sounds like a controling bitch] ] without the spaces becomes jeskai, juss sounds like a controling bitch. also, some punctuation and spell check would do wonders for your perceived impression and for convincing us to look at your deck

June 20, 2015 11:57 p.m.

You should add "creatureless" to the hubs. Nice deck.

June 21, 2015 11:08 p.m.

True, CaptainCaveman. Keranos will never be a creature. Thanks!

You can use Reality Shift to permanently remove the Regents. Sure, it gives them a 2/2, but there are plenty of ways to remove them easily with your Magma Jets and Anger of the Gods, so I say it's a fair trade.

As for the graveyard portion, I always find that Tormod's Crypt is useful in multiple games. You say your meta is usually B/R creature heavy, but it's amazing against Abzan reanimator and even against creatures like Bloodsoaked Champion. 1 should suffice.

Other than that, I really like this deck. It's very different and I love playing different decks instead of those same-old, same-old decks floating around. +1

since you are mainboarding a Haven of the Spirit Dragon (and its only real function is to recover ugin) you could put 1-2 Icefall Regent/Thunderbreak Regent in either main or side to help deal with the more creature based meta (or even some low drops like Omenspeaker or Stratus Dancer)

June 22, 2015 1:06 p.m.

@ SirFowler -- Reality Shift is good, but my main problem has been Thunderbreak Regent. I don't want to target him. Tormod's Crypt would be interesting to make their Haven's useless, but I don't think I want to devote a slot to that. I can just counter whatever they bring back.

@ IzuKorasu -- One of the strengths of this deck is that it makes my opponent's creature interaction useless, and I would like to keep it that way. Both Regents are solid options, but not for this deck. Thank you for the comment!

Izu_Korasu says... #25

well my idea was as a main/sideboard card when they side-out most->all their creature removal (its what i would do going into round 2, with my opponent not playing a single creature, well that and side in my 3x Mistcutter Hydra)

any cards you can make them side in-out to create dead draws is very useful for control. That being said, Thunderbreak Regent was suggested as it either acts as a Lightning Bolt making it a way to remove a card from their hand (like heroes downfall, which hits your ugin hard) or trades/eats a threat, helping you stay in control.

either way, nice deck its nice seeing people do something different. +1
