There you are, the almost-Tarkir Dragonstorm player! Oh, but it seems I wore my long legs today. What happens if I…

IMG-4402

A simple strategy not overly dependent on any fancy mana management, the splits were relatively simple here. It’s also an area of the deck one could make adjustments to if budget is a concern; I went all out simply because I own the sets and can just pull them from other builds so this one can play optimally. There are cheaper alternatives that play nearly as well, so don’t be afraid to switch those pricier lands out.

Godless Shrine, Marsh Flats, Silent Clearing and Brightclimb Pathway   cover either color immediately; these are our S+ tier lands. Shoutout to CommanderNeyo for reminding me Silent Clearing exists.

•Basic Swamps and Plainses fill out the remainder.

Your opponent has a choice. All they have to do is let you cast a shy, unthreatening Leaden Myr, Gravecrawler or Pollen-Shield Hare and allow them to remain unmolested. That’s all. You couldn’t possibly cause any real damage with timid creatures like that, right? But no, the opponent will invariably start hurling offensive spells and intimidating creatures in your direction.

We’ll leave off here for now, but we’ll be back…

None of the important pieces of our deck have any form of built in evasion or protection whatsoever, so we will need to rely on additional spells to compensate.

Thoughtseize is go to preemptive removal. Pick away anything that will throw a wrench in our plans, including (but not limited to) Illness in the Ranks and any Rest in Peace type cards. An ounce of prevention is worth £1 of cure…

Fatal Push owns the early game and forestalls much of what may otherwise make things very difficult later on.

Fracture is included for versatility; we won’t have much issue casting it and it will hit most of what will hurt us the worst should we miss with Thoughtseize.

Light of Hope is, again, very versatile for those situationally dependent plays.

Intangible Virtue is here primarily to combat mass damage/negative counters. Pulling a zillion tokens from the ether doesn’t do much good when they’re all 2/2 and can be wiped relatively easily. Bolstering them with an additional +1/+1 or +2/+2, etc. (they stack…) gives us some breathing room.

Surge of Salvation is our ace in the hole. Mass produce a bunch of fodder and Presto! An untouchable army ready to run roughshod over your opponent at the next available opportunity.

The Meathook Massacre comes suggested courtesy of legendofa and fits great thematically. Ssh, do you hear that? If you listen very carefully you can hear the Halo announcer declare ”Overkill. Killtacular! KILLTROCITY!!”. Kind of funny to amass an army only to have them never need to attack because the opponent is already dead.

When your opponent begins casting spells which threaten our key cards, Unmake them, and save them from the hell of living!

With The Sibsig Ceremony in play, let’s break it wide open with Myr Retrievers. If you’re unfamiliar with how this works, you simply cast one for free (courtesy of The Sibsig Ceremony) which sends it to the graveyard in exchange for a 2/2 zombie token.

Now cast a second Myr Retriever, which goes straight to the graveyard in exchange for another 2/2 zombie token, only this time it sends the first one back to your hand.

You may repeat this process Not once, Not twice…

But as many times AS YOU LIKE!

•Begin by casting either Pollen-Shield Hare or Intangible Virtue in preparation for the enchantment.

•Work toward getting a copy of The Sibsig Ceremony into play.

•Cast a Myr Retriever for free, sending it to the graveyard in exchange for a 2/2 token. Cast a second Myr Retriever, repeating the previous steps along with returning the first one to hand. Repeat this process as many times as desired, protecting your token army with Surge of Salvation if necessary, then attack with disturbing, malignant force.

Nothing yet.

Taking suggestions, and please highlight anything worthy of note from that upcoming set. I have seen literally nothing from it except for the aforementioned The Sibsig Ceremony so I’ll be curious as to whether there is some new deck tech to watch out for.

“When an unclean spirit comes out of a man, it passes through waterless places in search of a resting-place and finds none. Then it says, ‘I will go back…’ and after getting inside…the final circumstances of that man become worse than the first.”
