Lord Windgrace: So You Think You Can Land

Commander / EDH

justkevinmanley

I started playing Commander (heck, Magic in general) with Commander 2018. The first deck that grabbed my eye was Lord Windgrace because I liked the idea of ramping into big creatures. While I think the precon let down my expectations of what this ramp deck could be, I continued picking up more cards I found and refining it as I worked on other decks. This deck kept feeling like it was actively pushing me away to newer and more exciting deck archetypes, but each time I come back to it, it's gotten more and more enjoyable to play.

The build is a pretty as Lands Matters as I've been able to build it up so far. The main win conditions are using some combination of Torment of Hailfire, Scapeshift, omanath locus of rage, Titania, Protector of Argoth, Ob Nixilis, the Fallen, or The Gitrog Monster. There are a ton of other neat tricks the deck can pull along the way, but these cards still have the greatest payoff.

Scapeshift is probably my favorite card in the deck. When I first put it in, it seemed like it was only there to combo off with landfall triggers, but in more recent games, I've found myself pulling the trigger on it just to peel out all the lands from my deck, allowing me to greatly improve my chances of drawing gas off the top of the deck. It's especially nasty if I have a way to mass return all land cards from the graveyard to my battlefield setup for the turn/turn after Scapeshift happens.
