Maelstrom Pauperer

Commander / EDH*

Stapler12

Pauper Wanderer deck. Forget 10 ticket - welcome to the 2 ticket challenge, baby! (...Wanderer sold separately).

The theory behind this deck, and what was most challenging about building it, is that almost all of our cards are going to be worse than our opponents, simply because most commons don't come close to the power level of most rares. What this means is that the deck needs to accomplish one (or both) of two things:

1: It needs to attack them from a way they cannot profitably interact with, killing them quickly before they can use all their cards.

2: For every card they draw, we need to draw approximately 2 cards to match the power level of their card.

Luckily, Wanderer does all that and more by himself. The rest of the deck is cards that enable the fast and continued casting and recasting of Wanderer to outpressure and outvalue our opponents. Every card either needs to answer or delay the opponents strategy (aiding in requirement number #1) or accrue more cards and generate value (fulfilling requirement number #2). As another part of #2, we are playing less lands to improve our topdecks in the lategame, but our 6-7 slot consists almost solely of creatures with (land)cycling, letting us hit our land drops far more consistently while giving the deck the beef it need to finish games.

Some individual card notes:

  • The deck plays Silkwing Scout and not Sakura-Tribe Elder. Why the hell am I doing that? It's because Scout is a 2-power flier and Elder is an irrelevant 1/1. Stats and abilities matter way more in this deck that the speed of our ramp - I will gladly pay some extra mana if it means my creature is more relevant AS a creature in the lategame.

  • In a similar vein, I'm playing Zephyr Charge because getting through with my large creatures is a large source of my card advantage - that is, if my opponents are dead before they can cast their 7 spells in hand, I basically get a free Wit's End .

  • Deathtouchers can be pretty good rattlesnakes, especially when they have flying or reach (or are actual snakes). Thornweald Archer, Deadly Recluse , Ambush Viper , and Winged Coatl all help dissuade people from attacking the scary Wanderer deck, partly because they don't want to lose their guy, but mostly because those cards aren't good. I'm not playing Nightshade Peddler because I don't know.

Hello and good luck.
