Maelstrom Wanderer Cascading EDH

Commander / EDH Cascade RUG (Temur) Turns

toastmatic

This deck was designed to be formidable in both duel and multiplayer games without infinite combos (one of the only rules of our play group). The deck aggressively ramps early game, getting the commander online quickly while thinning out the deck for effective card draw late game. This deck has been a long progression and is constantly evolving but the current decklist has proven itself quite well.

The Theme

The main theme of the deck is to freely dump fatties with various cascaders. Although there are some setup capabilities with the Sensei's Divining Top and some tutors, cascade and Unexpected Results keep the deck fun and interesting (yet still very, very powerful).

The deck plays out very aggressive, with many hasted creatures dropping in early, most of which trigger effects upon entry. An unanswered Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker or Deadeye Navigator can quickly get things out of control once paired with an ETB card. Ostensibly, these are the two most powerful cards in the deck, but even without them the sheer speed of the deck is overwhelming.

The Mana Acceleration:

Getting Maelstrom Wanderer out quickly is important to the success of this deck, as well as having an abundance of mana late game to recast the general or flicker the ETB creatures with Deadeye Navigator. This deck will always find an outlet to dump extra mana.
Ramp:
Cultivate, Explosive Vegetation, Kodama's Reach, Skyshroud Claim

Creature Ramp:
Solemn Simulacrum, Oracle of Mul Daya, Yavimaya Elder

Mana Rocks:
Thran Dynamo, Mana Crypt, Sol Ring, Darksteel Ingot, Gilded Lotus, Coalition Relic

Enter The Battlefield Effects:

The core of the deck. Although the cascade effect only works when cast, any of these creatures can trigger effects from flickering.
Acidic Slime, Avenger of Zendikar, Duplicant, Eternal Witness, Inferno Titan, Mulldrifter, Solemn Simulacrum, Venser, Shaper Savant
And ways to abuse them:
Ghostly Flicker, Deadeye Navigator, Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker

Card draw:

Most of the time you will have cards in your hand, often you will have beyond 7.
Fact or Fiction, Rhystic Study, Sylvan Library, Consecrated Sphinx, Mulldrifter, Yavimaya Elder, Cryptic Command, Ancestral Vision, Time Spiral, Jace, the Mind Sculptor

Removal:

RUG doesn't have the best creature removal but in a pinch this deck can find an answer.
Beast Within, Krosan Grip, Acidic Slime, Duplicant, Blasphemous Act, Decimate, Hull Breach, Karn Liberated

Counter Magic / Theft:

To make sure other decks are kept in check (and cautious about the fatties within)
Cryptic Command, Control Magic, Treachery, Glen Elendra Archmage, Keiga, the Tide Star, Bribery

A note: While RUG can enable many infinite combos, this deck is not designed for that. There is one notable exception with Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker, Eternal Witness, and Time Warp or variant of that. If you see any others or have any suggestions I'd love to hear them. Thank you for checking out my deck!
