Maelstrom Wanderer: Energy Primer!

The energy mechanic really inspired me to build a fun deck around it. Unfortunately, energy decklists online are extremely hard to find, so I'm posting this one to help anyone out there looking for energy ideas! After looking at the best energy producers, I came to the conclusion that a Temur deck would be able to produce the most energy out of the ten shards and wedges.

As far as four color decks go, feel free to try Atraxa, Praetors' Voice or Yidris, Maelstrom Wielder , but losing red takes away a lot of your fun combos (and who isn't sick of seeing Atraxa all the time?), and I feel Yidris is a far worse commander than Maelstrom Wanderer and doesn't justify getting four extra energy cards to play with adding black. Also note that adding an extra color reduses the number of fun lands you can play.

Most of the commanders in Temur are decent and some have nothing to do with counters, but Maelstrom Wanderer really stood out to me, because I love this card, but it's just busted and annoying in competitive decks and it gets boring cascading into Avenger of Zendikars and Time Walks after a while. Maelstrom Wanderer, while not referencing energy or counters directly, really helps glue all the pieces of the deck together. With energy you want to build up a good boardstate and have one huge explosive turn where you destroy your opponents, and Maelstrom Wanderer is perfect for that! Giving your creatures haste helps you assemble your combos all at once and take advantage of them right away before your opponents spoil your fun!

Spell Swindle : If you're playing blue in EDH you probably want access to counterspells, but the problem with playing them in a Maelstrom Wanderer deck is that they make for lousy cascades. Well this counterspell from Ixalan is perfectly good on defense AND offense! On top of being five mana " Mana Drain ", if you hit it off of your commander's cascade ability, you can counter him and get EIGHT treasures, which lets you cast more spells after cascading OR potentially recast Wanderer to continue going off. It's also insanely spicy with the next card on here.

Gonti's Aether Heart : It's here for when you just want a ludicrous amount of energy. There's several uses for this card that might not jump out at you right away. As long as you have 6+ energy, just run it out whenever to serve as a solid energy generator. Feel free to pass the turn without activating the extra turn ability, because there's no time restriction on it. So if someone tries to kill it with anything other than Krosan Grip , just take an extra turn in response! You can also just use it as six mana Time Warp and smash face with your 7 power commander; I hear that ends games, too.

Inexorable Tide : This clunky enchantment might be pricey to get down, but once you have it in play all your spells have a much greater effect. Each spell can give you mana via Crystalline Crawler and Everflowing Chalice along with one energy, which really adds up when you're trying to activate things like Aetherworks Marvel multiple times in a turn. You can also go crazy with your planeswalkers and ultimate them in just a turn or two.

Three copies of Decoction Module + Whirler Virtuoso : This combo gives you infinite Thopter tokens, and if you somehow have four modules in play, infinite energy. Usually the Thopters will finish off your opponents, but if there's an Elesh Norn in play, or you can't attack them, then the energy should be able to win it for you. It's easier to set up than it looks with so many excellent tutors and clones in the deck. Clever Impersonator , Kuldotha Forgemaster , and Scultping Steel help you out, to name a few.

Spamming Aetherworks Marvel or Contagion Engine activations: There are plenty of ways to clone and untap these spicy artifacts, so if you have enough energy (around 20-30 or more which isn't that tough), you can activate the Marvel six or seven times in one turn and feel really cool about yourself. With Contagion Engine , you can proliferate your energy and opponents' -1/-1 counters until your heart gives out, but it's EXTRA dirty when you have something like Ral Zarek in play. With enough mana you have basically infinite extra turns, unless you're super unlucky.

Electrostatic Pummeler + Kessig Wolf Run : Giving the Pummeler trample is just what you need to set up a HUGE KO swing against somebody. In one game I played, with help from Peema Aether-Seer , which is one of the best energy producers in the deck, I attacked one of my opponents for 569 trillion trample damage.

Aetherwind Basker + basically anything: As long as you have at least a reasonable boardstate, this creature can easily get big enough to one-shot someone and is an excellent energy sink as well as an energy producer. Use Panharmonicon and clone effects along with Maelstrom Wanderer 's haste and you've probably got yourself a lethal attack.

Paradox Engine + playing magic: If you can't go infinite with Paradox Engine, it probably shouldn't be in your deck. This is by far the strongest combo piece in the deck and lets you go crazy with basically any part of the deck you want, as long as you have enough mana rocks out. It's especially good when you can recast Maelstrom Wanderer with Decoction Module or bounce Aethertide Whale to get infinite energy and mana.
