Maga, exiled from Minamo for unknown reasons, took to the Takenuma swamps of Kamigawa. There he made a pact with the Oni. In return for his soul, the Oni gave Maga unimaginable power. The deeper in the swamps of Takenuma Maga sank, the more destructive he became, swearing to one day take his vengeance on the wizards at Minamo.

Basically, Maga has thrown his lot in with demons, vampires, and other dark wizards to lay waste to his enemies.

First and foremost, the deck is filled with removal. To the brim. Specifically, Maga is much stronger in a one-on-one than in a free for all where it's easy to run out of steam. If something looks threatening, kill it. If it gets out of hand, wipe the board. In the mean time, start ramping. Get that mana rising as quickly as you can while keeping your opponent on their toes. If your hand gets too low, start drawing cards. The interesting thing I've noticed is that more often than not, you can always afford to lose some life for the card draw in this deck.

Don't get overexcited. Maga is by no means a trump card. And each time you recast him, he's going to be weaker. Make sure that when the time comes to cast Maga, it HURTS. Most games I play don't even see Maga hit the board until the end, when he usually acts as a finishing blow. Where that fails, you've got Exsanguinate, among plenty of other hateful spells to break your opponent's spirit. The best part, when playing against counters, you can typically get out of hand quickly as your opponent saves his counters for Maga or something else. Don't give him the satisfaction. You've got plenty of other things up your sleeve, the fewer other spells he counters the better. The more counters he uses the less he'll have when you go off.
