Maga, Traitor to Mortals

Commander / EDH Control Mono-Black

Sideboard

An EDH deck built around Maga, Traitor to Mortals.

Board Wipes: Essential for lessening board pressure from faster decks while you try to set up a late game plan. Because of the abundance of board wipes, I decided to try to take out more creatures and put in only creatures directly related to the game plan or that are extremely powerful. Black mostly kills creatures, so some colorless options are added to extend our reach,

Spot Removal: Although there is already a lot of board wipe, spot removal is very useful in multiplayer for political reasons. Sometimes, showing a kill spell is enough to convince someone to not attack you. Also useful for when you don't want to shred apart your own board state and there are only certain key targets to take out. Note that the spot removal is mainly scaling damage spells, as restrictions like "non-black" and "non-artifact" really hurt. Plus, we have board wipes to cover us for most of the time.

Mana Doublers: Having a huge amount of mana generators will remove black's problem with needing mana but having a hard time getting long-term sources of it. The artifact mana generators are immensely useful for getting your mana pool filled to the brim, while Cabal Coffers is just bonkers.

Card Manipulation: It doesn't mean much to have good cards if they're all buried in your deck. Card draw and tutors give you powerful access to anything in your library, way extending the reach of your hand.

Life Gain: Paying life can be a pain. It helps if something helps stop the bleeding. Gaining life every turn will also make those aggro EDHs hurt that much less.

Combo Pieces: There were three infinite combos in this deck, but the Bloodchief Ascension/Mindcrank combo was taken out as it took a few turns to set up. If you need to end the game quick, you have access to the most efficient finisher: one that can deal with everyone. You get to choose between Sanguine Bond + Exquisite Blood + damage source, and Leyline of the Void + Helm of Obedience.

X-Spells: Bigger is better. Ask those damage spells in this deck, ask the scaling utility spells, ask your girlfriend. They will all agree.

Planeswalkers: The more the merrier. Remember that even if planeswalkers die the turn after you play them, they still probably absorbed a decent amount of damage. Which is perfect, when between the planeswalker abilities and your extra turn of life you obliterate the entire board.

Utility Lands: There's always a deck you struggle building because it needs more answers but also needs those precious mana spots. Why not have both?
