Impromptu Legacy Tourney 1-2. —Feb. 16, 2016
Tonight was the first time in a long time I've had the opportunity to play the format, and my stats prove I'm a bit rusty. But hey, playing competitive Legacy is always a great time! And, I learned a lot from my mistakes and from my friendly opponents. There were six of us total, and everyone had Tier 1 decks. There were two Abzan (Dead Guy Ale and Maverick), one Burn/RDW, one TES/ANT, and RUG Delver.
Match 1- Dead Guy Ale, 0-2
Josh was on Dead Guy, with a light splash. He was heavy on hand disruption, all purpose removal, and LD ala Wasteland. Game 1 he played DRS, into WLand, blowing up a Cloudpost, and then Tidehollow Scullered Emrakul. That sucked. Then he took Ugin, the Spirit Dragon with a second Sculler after I named WLand with Pithing Needle. I was pretty much out of cards at this point, with a lone Top on the field and found nothing, with him pinging me with DRS, Dark Confidant, and a SFM that brought Jitte out. We went to game 2.
Game 2 saw a bit more in my favor after I was able to play a land and name Wasteland with Pithing Needle turn one. I think I had an Amulet of Vigor out, and in hand, Crop Rotation, Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre, Sundering Titan, and Primeval Titan. I had a few Posts out and a Forest, and thought about playing Crop Rotation to grab another Post to cast Sundering Titan, but noted he was on two duals and a Windswept Heath, so got greedy and wanted to wait til he cracked the fetch to play Sundering Titan. That cost me the game, inevitably, as he played Thoughtseize the next turn to grab the Sundering one. I was able to cast Ulamog and blow up his Batterskull, which in retrospect, I should've blown up a white source. Because he played Council's Judgment the following turn to exile Ulamog. Yep. Two huge misplays cost me that game, and match, as I couldn't do much else after that.
After the match, I went over my Abzan list with him and compared it to his. After the tourney he was kind enough to give me his deck list, which I plan on borrowing ideas from.
Match 2- TES/ANT, 0-2
This match sucks, but Mike was a good pilot and taught me a lot. I haven't played against Storm as of yet, so this was most definitely a learning experience. Game 1 I was on the draw, layed a land and named Wasteland with Pithing Needle, as I had a slight inclination he was on Storm, but didn't know if he was running Wasteland. Totally should've named a fetch land, in retrospect. He cantriped, Ritualed, Ritualed, played LED, Ad Nauseum, and WHIFFED?!?! He was at 4 life. Gave me a glimmer of hope. I was able to get out a Primeval Titan and brought my life total to 23, which wasn't enough, as he was able to get his Storm count high enough to do me in the following turn and ended the game with Tendrils of Agony. Indeed sir.
Game 2 I was on the play, boarded out Pithing Needle, Glacial Chasm, and some other stuff for Gaddock Teeg, Savannah, all three Chalice of the Void, and Bojuka Bog. I mulliganed to five hoping to see Chalice, but no. I played Ancient Stirrings hoping to dig for one, but found nothing but Cloudpost. On his turn, he Duressed my Amulet in hand and left me with Crop Rotation. Which was a mistake on his part. And my mistake was not playing Crop Rotation to find Bojuka Bog, instead playing Oracle of Mul Daya. That pretty much ended that match after he did his Storm schpeal. Mike even asked if I had a Bojuka Bog, and if so, why didn't I fetch it to hose his Past in Flames. I seriously kicked myself in the ass for that one. Had a good laugh though...
Match 3- RUG Delver, 2-0
I honestly thought about taking off after having my ass handed to me heavily in that last match. Luckily, I didn't. Bryce had the full gamut of cards I was geeking at. Totally dug his deck and design. Apparently, RUG Delver is a good matchup for me, though. His Spell Snare, Spell Pierce, and Daze don't do much later in the game. Goyf and Nimble Mongoose are also no match for Prime Time and the like.
In any case, Bryce was on the play and played a fetch, grabbing a Trop and passed the turn. I played a Glimmerpost and put Pithing Needle on the stack which he promptly FoW'd away, then played WLand on his turn to blow up Glimmerpost. Needless to say the whole Needle getting countered and WLand went on for a bit until I had a few Cloudpost and Vesuva on board to cast Ugin, the Spirit Dragon. I was able to tick Ugin up, Bryce's life total down, and take some heat off of my life total as Bryce aimed burn at Ugin to prevent his Ultimate. I resolved an Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre, blew up his Delver, and won shortly thereafter.
Game 2 went fairly the same way, except I was able to resolve ALL FOUR Amulet of Vigor, had a few Posts on board, cast Pithing Needle on the stack with Bryce at two cards in hand. He took the bait, countered it, and I played Primeval Titan and won the next turn with a Marit Lage token on the battlefield.
I had a fantastic time and played against some great pilots with great decks. I learned a helluva lot and that I really need to tighten up my game and piloting skills. Yep.
I've made some revisions to the main and sideboard, swapping Glacial Chasm for Bojuka Bog. I added 2x Leyline of Sanctity as a start and may add a third, as it's fantastic against TES/ANT, Burn, B/G/x variants, etc. Any other help is welcome!!!
