"Going down with the ship is just the beginning"

Hello there and welcome to my Akiri, Line-Slinger *f-etch*/Malcolm, Keen-Eyed Navigator pirate treasure deck

Treasure Tribal

Today, treasures are pretty much running rampant in EDH. It’s weird then to realize that for quite some time, treasures were more of a niche and janky thing. Not many treasure cards were around in the beginning. Since their introduction in Ixalan I had tried many times to make a treasure tribal deck work, but each time I could not get it to a spot where I really liked it. It wasn't until Commander Legends came around with Malcolm, Keen-Eyed Navigator when I finally got it into a shape where I was really happy with it.

Despite the recent increase of treasure support in Jund colors, I still prefer the Jeskai approach to treasure tribal that Malcolm and Akiri bring to the table. Not only is it potent and fun in gameplay, I really dig the flavor of combining treasure, pirates, outlaws and dragons into one deck. And the fact that Jeskai matches the colors of the Flying Dutchman 🇳🇱 is icing on the cake. If you are curious to this approach to treasure tribal, then please come along for this pingy pirate journey of risky adventures, frugal dragons and endless riches!

The Frugal Dutchmen

The goal of the deck is to go on an adventure with my crew of pirates and other outlaws and gather a huge amount of treasure. Then, instead of spending our riches, we are just going to sit on our hoard like a dragon and find other ways to benefit from having many treasures. Whether it's drawing cards off of them through Shimmer Dragon or Reverse Engineer, making our second commander Akiri, Line-Slinger *f-etch* stronger, getting crazy mana advantage via Inspiring Statuary or Vault of Catlacan, trading them for something more valuable via Indomitable Creativity or damaging our opponents with our wealth through Ghirapur AEther Grid or Reckless Fireweaver.

Revel In Riches

As soon as our treasure deposits start building up, the deck will start to accumulate value through them. It's a great feeling to turn all those treasures into carddraw through Shimmer Dragon, or to transform them from Lotus Petals into moxen with the improvise cards, Urza and Vault of Catlacan. How to best use each of the little trinkets is a fun mental exercise sometimes as moments will occur when they represent a lot of different options.

With all that treasure ready to be spent, we can also afford to run some greedy instant spells to wreak some havoc. With Fury Storm and Spell Swindle being good examples. We're also running some on-theme mana sinks, such as Spectral Sailor and Urza, Lord High Artificerfoil, in case we end up getting super rich.

The deck can win through commander damage by slamming a Shimmering Wings or Embercleave on Akiri, through Hellkite Tyrant/Mechanized Production, or via the following combo routes:

Intended Power Level

This deck has become quite edgy in terms of power level. The efficient combo lines combined with lower-costed commanders is already quite potent, while the treasure deposits allow this deck to hold up answers a lot of the time. At first I tried to dial back a bit, but I have now embraced the relative high power from what I usually build. I also find it hilarious that such a janky idea turned out to be so competitive. It's not quite cEDH, but it's nice to have a deck that can join such games and at least have a fighting chance.

I do think this deck can be made a lot more casual if you dig the treasure tribal but want to avoid playing at this power level. By removing the combos and some of the efficient mana rocks and interaction, you create room for alternative strategies such as more emphasis on pirate tribal or effects like Rise and Shine or Brudiclad, Telchor Engineer. On the other hand, you could also make this deck way more competitive and go for a true cEDH deck, focusing on the interactions with Glint-Horn Buccaneer and Reckless Fireweaver. I will keep it hovering somewhere in between for now :).

Updates Add

Some changes I'll be looking to make when the new set is available:

  • OUT: Monologue Tax, IN Guild Artisan: I like Guild Artisan because it can come into play prior to Malcolm and that it can do double duty if we have both our commanders in play and 2 players share the highest life total (which is likely early game). The potential to get a lot of treasure fast and early is why I’m adding this. Monologue Tax is less of a burst card that has to come out early, but the fact that this competes with Malcolm for a 3-drop has made it a bit weird in this list.
  • OUT: Martyr's Bond, IN Ancient Copper Dragon: Not sure yet if it is going to be worth the include, but I’m committing a slot to finding that out. We can give this pseudo haste by tutoring it into play EOT with Magda, or straight up haste with Lightning Greaves. I really like the potential power and the flavor of this card. Martyr’s Bond has been a powerful card, but isn’t the prime example why I wanted to build this deck. And there is still plenty of interaction in the deck without it.
  • OUT: Warkite Marauder, IN: Open the Armory: Open the armory was in the deck before, but with Copper Dragon I like to have another piece to access haste. Warkite Marauder has always been nice to have, but never required.
  • OUT: Curse of Opulence, IN: Curiosity: I want my tutors to always give me access to card draw. Curiosity was in the deck before due to the synergy with pingers and Kediss, Emberclaw Familiar, and Open the Armory is a reason for me to put it back in. Not sure about this change yet, because I also like the curse (which is also an aura), but I’ll go with this for now.
  • OUT: Havoc Jester, IN: Ingenious Artillerist: In the close of the spoilers we get this nice common that is going to be a much more efficiently costed backup for Reckless Fireweaver than Havoc Jester. Also works better than the jester with Curiosity.
