Mana Breach Storm Cauldron

Legacy Artifact Control Creatureless Mono-Blue

nvc73

Mana Breach and Storm Cauldron seem to belong together in a deck, which punishes people for playing spells or tapping mana by returning their lands to their hand. But is this really a viable deck strategy? How to build around it? My strategy was to include a lot of blue bounce spells to really add insult to injury...what is more annoying than having your permanents bounced? Having them bounced when you are also very short on land! The other elements of the deck are artifact mana sources so your deck can still function in the presence of mana breach / storm cauldron, then some kind of win conditions, tied to the theme of the deck (bouncing land) - these are ebony owl netsuke (which punishes your opponent for having seven or more cards in hand) and ankh of mishra (which punishes anyone when they play a land). The other interesting addition is Trade Routes, which lets you discard lands to draw cards...perfect card advantage for this type of deck. Playtesting reveals that the deck can work OK, but its not great. Depends a lot on whether your opponent can function on only a few lands. Terrible against elves obviously ! Still, I'm pretty happy with it. Its fun to watch how frustrated your opponent gets as you keep sending lands back to their hand, and they have to suffer 2 damage to re-play them !
