Notes: I wasn't sure at first about main-boarding Whisperwood Elementals over a more aggressive card such as Outland Colossus, but after yesterday's FNM, I can see it is a staple for the deck. It won me at least one game by effectively doubling my draw whilst converting dead late cards into usable 2/2 chumps, and gave me a massive defensive measure against decks with board wipe and Languish that could ruin my day.

As long as you're still running Theros block, you should throw in a couple of Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx

August 22, 2015 8:09 a.m.

Sorry, somehow I missed that Unravel the Aether in your sb

Nice deck, +1

Yeah I wasn't going to bother adding in a couple of Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx, as it still costs a bit, but whatever I might as well grab a couple.

Swapped Reverent Hunter for Den Protector. Den protector just gives so much value and has evasion, and I'd rather have a 3/2 (more with scales up) unblockable than a 10/10 being blocked by 1/1 chumps.

I've also added Solidarity of Heroes to the Maybe Board. It seems cool, and you can imagine doubling a fat hydra's counters, but I worry that it would be a win-more card and dead in a lot of hands. One good thing is that it's an instant, so you could actually use it to make surprise trades or overpower blockers. Thoughts?

Hey I love the deck I have been playing something very similar. My first suggestion would be to drop the Bow of Nylea to a 1-of. It's a fantastic card but it's expensive and nobody likes a dead card in your hand. Next would be to drop your curve lower or add a land or two. Just my advice as I've been playing my deck, Standard Mono Monster Mash, in tournament play for a few weeks now. 22 land just won't be consistent enough to land your Whisperwood Elementals and Surrak, the Hunt Callers and Polukranos, World Eaters. Not that you can't have those cards, you just need to keep the number down.

Hey kchedges, thanks for the tips. I had been thinking the same thing about the bow, so I'll take one out. I hadn't noticed too much of a mana problem last FNM, barring one unlucky game, but at the same time I realise my old green decks used to have a lot more ramp, and perhaps I haven't adjusted the land count to support this change. I think I'll replace the 1 Bow of Nylea for 1 Forest, and see how it goes!

Thanks!

Hidden_Blade- I think that's a great call, you'd be surprised how much more consistency one land can give.

Splash out for another Hangarback Walker? They are always good to play, ahead or behind, and a VIP of many games.

You should consider splashing white for Anafenza, Kin-Tree Spirit and Gleam of Authority along with all the white removal and Abzan Falconer for extra evasion, gleam is absolute beast drop on a den protector or avatar with a hangarback or hydra and watch ur board grow, can quickly wreck ur opponent plus bolster mid combat with vigilance an hardened scales is a huge boost and end of turn plays

Ordeal of Nylea is good for land and counter ramp. Armory of Iroas is also not bad.

@Alex.moellmer, and anyone else: I thank you for taking the time to comment with suggestions for the deck, however I have no intention of ever changing the deck from mono-green, as if that was my intention I would have started G/W like dozens of other decks on this site.

I love the play-style and reliability that mono-green affords, as well as the benefits of not requiring expensive land cards to make the deck tick, which allows me to put my limited funds into more interesting avenues. I've always played mono-green, and probably always will.

So basically, I'm asking politely that no one advises me to bring any other colour into the deck. It is clearly viable, having secured both 2nd and 3rd place with minimal changes since my first draft, and I believe that is partly due to the focus, reliability and synergy that the deck holds.

What can I say? I'm a fanatical purist :D

@Quarion65. I like Ordeal of Nylea, and I would love to put it in the deck because the synergy with the deck is great. However, in my current meta, every mtg player and his mum is packing serious removal, so I worry that unless I could get the mana proc the turn I use it that it would end up a 2 for 1 trade for my opponent when he destroys the enchanted creature. That said, it probably shouldn't be hard to get the proc the same turn.

It also cycles out soon, and at the moment my deck is looking quite secure for the new set with only 5 cards (two are lands) that need to be replaced.

I will put it in the MB just in case though, and I'll test it as it seems fun, so thanks.

Might not agree but fair enough I can respect that. In that case I could suggest Tuskguard Captain for trample among your non already trample guys specially when nylea rotates out. Also some sideboard suggestions. Gaea's Revenge only way for control decks to kill is a crux Preatty much, and Genesis Hydra so even if countered it ability triggers when it's cast meaning u can still get something on the field, and against red burny decks if u have trouble try Titanic Growth to get outa burn/languish range and if say get some enchant removal

Anyways to improve your mana-curve? mana cost 3 at 8.1% seems low.

Hidden_Blade says... #18

Yeah it is a bit of a problem, but the only worthwhile/ synergistic 3 drop I could find were the Tuskguard Captains, but they feel a bit slow. Do keep in mind however that a morphed Den Protector is a hidden 3 drop. I'm currently testing Tuskguards again as a 2-of in place of the Ordeal of Nylea/Inspiring Call slot.

Yeah. It will be interesting to see how your deck evolves come October. Have you considered the card, see the unwritten. looks like it has potential kind of like evolutionary leap but mana cost is 6.

They aren't cheap, but Deathmist Raptor could be awesome in this deck since you have Den Protector and Whisperwood Elemental.

I would also seriously consider some Ainok Survivalist for this deck. You get the counters on top of destroying an artifact or enchantment, and having lots of megamorph in a deck that does some manifesting is pretty awesome. (and they're only $.20 lol)

Hidden_Blade says... #21

@MTGNISSA and Harbynger: hey thanks for the comments and suggestions, and I too am exited to see what new options the new set will bring, particularly when I'm currently already very near post-rotation status with this deck.

I'm keeping a close eye on Deathmist Raptor, and if and when it lowers in price I will certainly snatch them up, but for now I can't really justify spending so much on one card.

Nice suggestion on Ainok Survivalist, but I'm struggling with space with the deck. I might add two to the main board in replacement of Tuskguards, and keep another pair in the sideboard to replace Unravel the Aether. Then I can add the Tuskguards to the SB for if I need more trample than enchantment hate.

I agree on Deathmist Raptor. I see that card moving higher actually . Here in philippines dragons of tarkhir isn't getting much love. it actually has lots of good cards especially for green deck.

what are you looking at to replace your polukranos? caustic caterpillar is also a good cheap card to have a look at

September 6, 2015 11:01 a.m.

Hidden_Blade says... #24

To be honest I haven't given it that much thought. The deck certainly likes his stats for the cost - in a deck that relies somewhat on synergy, Polukranos is a very reliable beater, but his legendary status hinders him a little. Ideally, Battle for Zendikar will give me a shiny new 4-drop to play with - its fairly likely at the least!

Undergrowth Champion

A potential new addition to the deck. Slower to grow than Managorger Hydra, but has great defensive capabilities. He'll certainly give big eldrazi and Red a really hard time, so at the least he'll be a sideboard option. I just wish he had trample!
