Marchesa Best Grixis

Marchesa is a mean little gremlin whose strategy revolves around bringing everyone else down with you. This deck abuses every resource and is very greedy and therefore susceptible to punishment, but what's fun without risk?

Why is this fun?

This deck is predominantly creature-based and lends itself well to long games. It does have combos, but it really shines when you've developed a boardstate and can deprive your opponents of the same. As such, it's designed to play a little like aggro, combo, and creature-based control. I very often become public enemy #1 since this deck is very good at attrition and breaking parity.

Interaction

Here are some problems the deck runs into and some solutions for those situations.

• Enchantments: Grixis usually has a hard time dealing with enchantments outside Grixis Charm, Crosis's Charm , and Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker. Aura Thief is here to mitigate some of that risk.
• Blockers: if your opponent has creatures that are bigger or more threatening than yours, boardwipes are the answer. Bearer of the Heavens, Toxic Deluge, Coercive Portal, Cyclonic Rift, Damnation, and Subterranean Tremors are ways to take your opponents' creatures out of the equation. Liberal use of boardwipes is encouraged as your creatures will almost always come back. Profaner of the Dead is like a nerfed Cyclonic Rift on a stick, and can be downright mean when you exploit a creature every turn.
• Spot removal is also included in the form of Reality Shift , Disallow, Grixis Charm, and Crosis's Charm . Creatures like Noxious Gearhulk and Dinrova Horror can remove them, Baleful Strix is a good rattlesnake, and Butcher of Malakir along with a sacrifice outlet can machinegun down your opponents' fields.If you're more about stealing things, Simic Manipulator, Thalakos Deceiver , and Zealous Conscripts allow you to take control, and any sacrifice outlet with Marchesa, the Black Rose on the board means that you can keep things forever.
• Lifegain: don't worry about it. Abusing Noxious Gearhulk and Disciple of Bolas can net you life, but you always want your opponent to have more life than you do. If they have 100, it's not unrealistic to still beat them to death with creatures. Failing all else, combos can still get you there and Erebos, God of the Dead can stop lifegain.

The chopping block currently consists of Nightscape Familiar and Treasonous Ogre. I'll need to playtest more to see what's worth keeping. I just used Dinrova Horror for the first time, and it didn't do much for me when I was ahead. puts it on the same stage as Noxious Gearhulk and I like lifegain better than making one opponent discard.

Necropolis Regent just came out for Necropotence and I think it was a good trade.

UPDATE: Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker, Commander's Sphere, and Darksteel Ingot have been removed to make room for Dimir Signet Rakdos Signet and Izzet Signet. Kiki wasn't doing anything aside from comboing with Zealous Conscripts, but I may put him back in if I decide to fully commit to Splinter Twin, Pestermite , and Deceiver Exarch.

Dinrova Horror, Animation Module , Mulldrifter, Thalakos Deceiver , and Profaner of the Dead have been removed to make room for Siren Lookout, Seekers' Squire, Brazen Buccaneers , Bloodcrazed Paladin, and Herald of Secret Streams.
