Marchesa's Penthouse of Scum and Villainy

Commander / EDH Casual Multiplayer UBR (Grixis)

SleepySmiley

Welcome to Marchesa's Top-Story Penthouse, your hub of dodgy dealings, raucous rogues and nefarious ninjas. This is a new, improved and still incomplete version of Marchesa's Luxury Suite of Scum and Villainy. This fresher, cleaner deck differs in that a) it has over 9 lands and b) the name is different as I couldn't afford a Luxury Suite.

As I've mentioned, the deck isn't complete, but I'm posting it anyway to get recommendations for synergies and cuts. If you do make suggestions, please don't recommend cards over $5, as I try to maintain a budget as much as possible. Some cards I've included are over that $5 limit, but I have deemed them essential for the deck and am willing to pay the price. I am on the lookout for some versatile tutors for Virtus the Veiled, Quietus Spike and Scytheclaw, and am thinking of using transmute cards Brainspoil and Perplex.

This deck was initially conceived as a ninja-cipher deck, but grew to encompass the whole unblockable theme. I chose Marchesa, the Black Rose as my commander because:
  • I prefer the utility offered by playing 3-colour,
  • She's cheap to cast (I generally hate large mana costs unless I am ramping hard on their effect is flashy),
  • She protects my board (I hate rebuilding from board wipes),
  • Her +1/+1 counter ability is extra value when coupled with unblockable creatures,
  • Her flavour fits with a scheming, plotting theme represented by unblockable creatures.
This is my second commander deck, the first I have built with proper background research, and the first that consists of a plan other than "durdle until you lose". This is my first time playing red and black, and my first time trying to use blue as more than an extra colour in Roon of the Hidden Realm's identity.

As I am not prepared to delve into the murky land of combo yet, I decided to win the way I am most familiar with, and that is to the face damage from creatures. As attempting to deal 120 combat damage in a game of commander is a quite unnatractive prospect, I am bringing some tools to the table to even the odds.

Quietus Spike, Scytheclaw and Virtus the Veiled are my main modes for victory. They were actually decided upon after the design of unblockable value was fleshed out in my mind, as synergistic win conditions. The plan is to make Virtus or a carrier of Quietus Spike or Scytheclaw unblockable through a myriad selection of effects, while enjoying some ninjutsu antics.

Commander Synergy

Card Draw I prefer repeatable effects as opposed to one off spells, so I have attempted to find some budget draw effects on creatures and enchantments:

This description is unfinished, but I am cycling anyway to garner interest. Let me know if you have any suggestions, and thanks for taking a look.
