Mardu Tokens 1.0

Modern RBW (Mardu)

Sideboard

I've been nicknamed the 'Mardude' by my friends for sticking to Mardu for so long. I've tried Aristocrat strategies, super friends, and hard control. This last weekend was GPIndy2016, and I day two'd with this deck.

I was expecting a lot of non-interactive Magic, but the great thing about Mardu is how interactive it has to be to survive. Between taking your hand apart with Inquisition of Kozilek to playing efficient removal with Lightning Bolt + Lightning Helix + Path to Exile , the deck has a "take on all comers" feel to it where there aren't many obviously "bad" match ups.

Since we're so spell-focused, it made sense to have the deck include Monastery Mentor + Young Pyromancer as a win condition while we're busy controlling the board. They can lead to buying time versus aggressive strategies, but also primarily work as a win condition for us. The pressure generated by lots of tokens can bring matches close, allowing us to burn opponents out of their remaining life points.

This deck did pretty well versus a field with lots of Infect and Suicide Zoo. These decks don't play an interactive game, and they aren't planning on facing a deck that's packed full of efficient removal. This is where Collective Brutality really shined, in which it could remove a creature and take a meaningful card from their hand.

Cards that I think need to be replaced or removed are Abbot of Keral Keep, Surgical Extraction, Nihil Spellbomb, and Timely Reinforcements.

Updates Add

Hey everyone!

Decided to update the Mardu list with some of the new Kaladesh cards being released now.

After my Day 2 at GP Indy I learned that Abbot of Keral Keep is probably the weakest card in the deck. I want to try to find Soulfire Grandmaster to replace him with, but until then, I want to try out Dynavolt Tower.

The tower fits into the overall goals of the deck. It is very spell-heavy, using cards like Young Pyromancer and Monastery Mentor to get extra value off of our spells. This allows us to control the board with efficient removal while building up a lethal army. The energy we can gain from the tower can be used to power additional "Lightning Bolts" which can be further used to control the table or to push for lethal at our opponent's face. Furthermore, with this on the table, any late game drawn spell can be used to turn into more energy. Top decking Inquisition of Kozilek late in the game doesn't feel as bad when it generates almost half of a Lightning Bolt.

I'm going to test this on stream tonight, I will return with results later!
