The group I play with uses modern as more of a guideline, so, they've ok'd the use of Dragonspeaker Shaman and Seething Song. I'm curious though if I were to change those out for real modern legal cards; what would you recommend?

Geosurge is nice alternative for Seething Song. I would keep Dragonspeaker Shaman, becos its not banned, but if you want to replace it, Semblance Anvil would be nice alternative for it.

Cool I think I have a few copies of Geosurge around. I think the issue with Dragonspeaker Shaman isn't that it's banned but rather that it was printed before the modern cut off.

Thanks for the recommendations, I'd never heard Semblance Anvil before but will be picking up a few copies just in case I decide to make the leap.

I loved Dragonspeaker Shaman back in the old days XD

If you want a cheap "legal" alternative you could wait for some Dragonlord's Servant. Yeah they reduce the generic mana cost just by 1 but at least they are playable in modern. If your goal is to play just with friends keep using Dragonspeaker Shaman :)

Thanks! It's a lot of fun. I think I'm going to pull out one of the Rift Bolts for a second copy of Blood Moon, the hate is real!

Ok, so, Kargan Dragonlord is powerful but I'm wondering how it fits. What should it replace? How many copies?

April 8, 2015 3:54 a.m.

Personally, it can replace slumbering dragon. You always want to be in control.

I don't think pulling the Slumbering Dragons out is the best idea for the deck, it's in the deck because it's a one drop dragon. It works great with Draconic Roar, kill the mana dork and they take 3 to the face on turn two! Even in the late game playing a Slumbering dragon could be a Shock or a Lightning Bolt if you have Dragon Tempest or Scourge of Valkas out. Kargan Dragonlord is a mighty powerful card but I don't think it has a home in a deck full of two drops. Maybe I'm wrong though.

I am debating if I want to have Haven of the Spirit Dragon or Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle, thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

have you considered Atarka's Command to replace Rift Bolt. The ramp burn buff and damage prevention is all pretty relevant, and you already have the green splash

CSchademann says... #14

Oh wow, no I hadn't considered Atarka's Command. I even have a couple. Thank you! Do you think 2 is the right number?

Gaffa says... #15

Personally I like 4 but I think just for testing purposes 2 should do fine. Playing 2 of these bad boys on turn 3 puts you at 5 lands ready to go on turn 4 which can make all of your dragons come out a lot sooner

CSchademann says... #16

that would be one hell of a turn 3. I do some play testing and we'll see how it goes. If I do end up trying to run three do you have any thoughts on what other cards should be cut?

Gaffa says... #17

I'd say a Manamorphose or Desperate Ritual as these will be providing some ramp, and I don't think the color-fixing is extremely relevant here the card is good but command good? I don't know

I would drop the Act on Impulse for either more Outpost Sieges or more Domri Rades. Act requires you to use the exiled cards immediately, which sucks if you get the card you need, but lack the mana to do it. Domri doesn't kill the card if you can't cast it, and gives you free creatures sometimes. Outpost Siege doesn't trigger until the next turn, which means your lands will be untapped and ready to play your guys.

Aside from this, I have no comments or opinions, as I haven't played the deck.

I think your right about Act on Impulse, I think Outpost is a one of at most though. I'll look at adding a couple more Domri to the decklist but I'm a little concerned seeing as this isn't a super creature heavy deck. I do have Hunter's Insight as a maybe because I'd like to try that out. Thanks for your imput, every little bit helps.

Why not run 4x Thundermaw Hellkite.

I haven't had much luck running high numbers of 5+CMC cards, I'm leaning towards (as you might have noticed) a deck that digs-into/thins-out the library with Manamorphose,Descendants' Path,Wooded Foothills, and now Avaricious Dragon so I don't need much ramp and can still hit the bigger dragons when I need them. If you think it might be better to run a playset I'd be happy to do some testing though.

Well if your looking for good draw cards Browbeat could work. Not sure if im a fan of Hunter's Insight because if they're sitting on a removal spell you'll get 2 for 1'd.

June 16, 2015 6:18 p.m.

CSchademann says... #23

I tested out Browbeat a little bit last month and it's great as a 3CMC burn spell but my opponents never gave me the cards (ok, it happened once but his life total was 4). You're certainly not wrong about Hunter's Insight either, when they have the removal it hurts (a lot) and it's not uncommon for that to be the case. For that reason I've fallen into the habit of holding Insight until I have a Thunderbreak Regent on the battlefield. If they have the removal it's a bummer but I still did 3 damage, if they have a counter spell I'm (normally) just doing the damage, and if they have neither I'm getting the card draw. I'm not saying that Hunter's Insight is better than Browbeat but I've had much better time running insight.

how does cribswap being a shapeshifter help you? just curious.

If I'm not mistaken the changeling part of the spell means it counts as a dragon resolving and allows for either Dragon Tempest or Scourge of Valkas to deal damage.
