Sideboard

Hey everyone!

With a new set comes new possibilities for under-performing decks to possibly come back! I wanted to take Born of the Gods and take my crack at making Grixis Control a viable deck type. This was in part of two new cards:

  1. Drown in Sorrow printed, mostly to combat white weenies!

  2. Temple of Malice printed, giving four new scry lands on top of Temple of Deceit.

Grixis in the past has lacked three solid things that Azorious and Esper did better: Lifegain, Consistent Card Draw, and Board Wipes. Before we literally had Anger of the Gods. Brave the Elements, for one, just completely negated it and made us have a bad time.

So first, as with all introductions to decks, I offer the win cons!

Main Wincon #1: AEtherling

Aetherling is, of course, the go-to card to win in blue control decks. It's only a one-of in main, but it's something to fish for while we control the board.

Main Wincon #2: Master of Cruelties

With multiple ways to deal direct damage, with Ral Zarek to Lightning Strike, an unblocked Master of Cruelties means an almost assured win.

How to fix the problems:

  1. Lifegain - To fix the big lifegain problem, I've added in two Elixir of Immortality. This helps combat mill, and will give recurrence to our cards!

  2. Card Draw - This actually has not changed too much, but we have more scry triggers, and there are still 7 cards devoted almost solely to card advantage (Divination and Jace, Architect of Thought).

  3. Board Wipes - This one is obvious! Add in some Drown in Sorrow!

Otherwise the decklist is pretty straight forward. I may go and do a card-by-card analysis some time soon, but for now, it's just an in-progress Grixis Control shell that can be modified for your local meta.
