Master of the Dragonlords transformed to fit the Frontier format, which is basically what the deck was when it was standard (during M15 to BFZ), with a few additions thanks to new blocks.
With the loss of Birds of Paradise and Sylvan Caryatid as any color mana dorks, I had to tranform the land base to better support all the dragonlords. So more fetches.
The deck is Temur based to get access to Temur Ascendancy and Sarkhan Unbroken with a splash for and for the extra dragonlords. Shaman of Forgotten Ways does a pretty good job casting the dragonlords with the splash colors.
The deck is pretty straight forward
- Mana dorks Elvish Mystic+Rattleclaw Mystic+Shaman of Forgotten Ways to ramp
- Mid threat (Thunderbreak Regent)
- Dragonlords
- Removal
- Support cards
A few notes on the support cardsTemur Ascendancy: Often the MVP, making mana dorks tap instantly to dump them all almost the same turn and the obvious plus being drawing cards when a dragon enters the battlefield and making it an instant threat.
Sarkhan Unbroken: Here is how I used it, +1 when Temur Ascendancy isn't on the battlefield, drawing a card. Or if I need one of the splash colors. -2 when the ascendancy is down, getting a threat, drawing a card. Can also be used to get a blocker of course.
Eldritch Evolution: There is only 1 of each dragonlords, and that's where Eldritch Evolution is usefull, you can evolve something else to tuto the needed dragonlord. In my frontier version, it's a bit harder to evolve into the 7cmc dragons because I'm missing 5 cmc creatures (RIPThundermaw Hellkite). But I wasn't playing all the Dragonlords mainboard either, Modern being a faster format, it was safer.
So far, I played against Bant Company and Elves and won. So I think the deck can definitely be competitive. Haste being the big +. NOTE: See update for more match-ups
That's pretty much it. I still have to tweak the sideboard, I need to play against more decks first. So far I have the obvious, Enchantmant and Artifact Removal, Graveyard hate, countertspell protection, etc. Where I feel my sideboard is lacking is against aggro. The probleme being, if I play Radiant Flames (like I was playing Pyroclasm in modern), I'm losing almost all my mana dorks (compared to the Sylvan Caryatid surviving). Might just have to find a way to be even more aggressive and race them in the air.
Another note, the deck color base could probably be switched to instead, running Dragon Tempest instead of Temur Ascendancy, and getting access to some good black removal, like Fatal Push and Foul-Tongue Invocation.
Changing a couple Fiery Impulse for Dig Through Time could be to consider too. Sometimes I get too many mana dorks in my hand and not enough action.
Suggestions are welcomed, and feel free to +1 the deck if you like it!
