The primary purpose of the deck is to control the table and make sure that one is able to attack you or will even want to (that is until they realize what kind of monster you've created, but by then it will be too late). There are a couple of ways that this deck tries to dominate the table.

  1. Removal: Creatures will have a hard time attacking you if they aren't on the table. Luckily, this is Mardu, the king of removal. We have access to such cards as Anguished Unmaking, Mortify, Path to Exile, Dreadbore, etc. However, spot removal doesn't work when it comes to large masses of creatures, so that leads me to the next way that we will control the board.

  2. Mass Removal: As it just so happens, Mardu is also really good in mass removal so we have access to such beauties as Merciless Eviction, Blasphemous Act, and others that are not on this list. If your meta requires it, by all means, add some board wipes. Other board wipes of note not mentioned include Damnation, Wrath of God, Toxic Deluge, and Decreee of Pain. We also are able to get past large creature loads through the next category.

  3. You Shouldn't (cant't) Attack Me: This wouldn't be a pillowfort deck if we just nicely asked everyone to not attack us, so we have to make that a little less optional. With cards such as Angelic Arbiter, Ghostly Prison, Sphere of Safety, Archangel of Tithes, Crawlspace, and No Mercy, attacking us becomes complicated. We can make things simpler by just forcing people to attack others with cards like Disrupt Decorum. And, if all of that wasn't enough you can just phase out to avoid any kind of threat at all with Teferi's Protection.

  4. Stax: Hindering our opponents just so happens to be another way live longer and fits really well with the pillowfort strategy. Nothing says stax like Smokestack, and it never hurts to throw in Aven Mindcensor, and Leonin Arbiter. Blind Obedience is also a "fun" way to tilt the game in our favor.

  5. Abusive Win-Cons: As much as I enjoy winning by making my opponent rot into their chair as they slowly succumb to the eternal game that is going absolutely nowhere, it seems more consistent to run a win-con or two. Master of Cruelties is useful if you can get in there (perhaps after a boardwipe). Assemble the Legion is good in the long game and gives us tokens to sacrifice to Smokestack. Olivia Voldaren works because stealing other people's win-cons can also work if we can't find ours. Let's not forget that any creatures that we have can become quite strong with the aid of Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite, and she also helps us with any large masses of tokens that may happen to exist. And if creatures don't cut it, a large hit from either Exsanguinate or Debt to the Deathless usually does the trick.
