Ok. That's what I'll do and you're right. One can never go wrong with Wasteland and Strip Mine
January 7, 2014 6:10 p.m.
A friend of mine plays Mayael and what he does is he ramps up massively in the early stages and then as soon as he possibly can he'll cast something like Worldly Tutor in his own turn, after his draw phase. He'll put something like Blightsteel Colossus on the top of his library and then activate Mayael. I'm almost certain he's had this work by T4 before with Lotus Cobra and a ton of fetchlands. I'm not sure EXACTLY how but it's certainly explosive. You can use tutors that send things to the top of your library instead of your hand to make Mayael silly.

@ Ohthenoises Safe Haven is a neat trick but one guy I play with is one of those LD junkies...it wouldn't be worth it I don't think. I'll keep it in mind.
@ ChiefBell I could just ramp and play fatties but that's not really my style. This set up is a little slower, but I feel like it gives me more resilience.

An earlier version of this dropped Avacyn on turn 4 thanks to Worldly Tutor and Bloom Tender . It's damn good ramp but very vulnerable.

for an alternate and i prefer Hellkite Charger infinite attack combo you could use Bear Umbra with it since its when the creature attacks. with the Sword of Feast and Famine if they were to somehow block hellkite charger both times it wouldn't work. or another card i recommend is Nature's Will so it isnt only restricted to hellkite dealing damage or whoever is the creature with the equipped card. and jsut a fun combo i like probably not that great to put in a mayael but just incase if it sounds fun to you Stuffy Doll and Pariah combo so your enemy hurts himself.

Stuffy Doll and Pariah are great fun, but they don't really fit here.
Nature's Will is interesting, but limited in that they just get to untap their lands on their turn anyway. Im a big fan of Vorinclex for shutting down their land. I guess it stops their instant speed removal, if they dont use it in response to the trigger, or counterspells...that's a good thing. I'd think in a deck build intended for combatting the Archenemy or something it may be really good. Or where there are still a number of people who get to go after you and you want said player dead...
Bear Umbra ...if this was a Uril, the Miststalker build it would be an auto-include. Even having said that though, much of the removal in my meta is exile, tuck or sweeper. Bear Umbra would help my creature survive the last one, but that's all. Second to that, my meta had a fair bit of green and black so the sword-bearer rarely gets blocked. TBH I've been considering taking Hellkite Charger out for my copy of Windbrisk Raptor . Most of the time I think it just does more.

I love this! Mind if I take a few ideas for modifying my Marath EDH?

What are your opinions on items that grant multiple attack steps?
World at War
Savage Beating
Aggravated Assault
I was able to successfully cast a World at War yesterday and then on the rebound turn I was able to cast Aurelia, the Warleader (who I see you have) for 3 attack steps.
Also, Xenagos, God of Revels , Nylea, God of the Hunt , and some of the other gods could be good here, particularly Xenagod with multiple attack steps compounding his pump, and his haste playing, oh so nicely, with Mayael the Anima . (A 5/5 becomes a 10/10, then a 20/20 which allows you to swing for 30 in one turn with just one creature.)

@ Krause...not at all, borrow away.
@ Ohthenoises Xenagod for sure, he's been on my "to acquire" list for awhile I just haven't prioritized it since I've been working on my Nekusar list. I'm keeping an eye out for them though. I love World at War and Savage Beating ...I've been trying to decide if Sterling Grove is serving its purpose but I need more testing...win-cons-aplenty in this deck so the tutors aren't as necessary.

Well, sterling grove CAN go get Aggravated Assault ...

Interesting note, you have 4 creatures that can fetch Xenagod off of Wild Pair ... interesting...
I'll post my wife's current WIP Mayael sometime soon to share with you.

Xenagod definitely makes me feel ok main phasing mayael if I need to put pressure on the board.
Also, and in a totally not creepy thread highjacking way, I vaguely remember Ohthenoises you still had a fiance sometime back, so congrats bud!

Also Congrats! I just got engaged myself...finally lol.
Ok, Xenagod in over Fires of Yavimaya since I rarely sacced it for the pump anyway. Any recommendations for Aggravated Assault ? It does fit my enchantment subtheme pretty well.

Thanks, yea, shes a good lady. Congrats to you as well MindAblaze!.
As promised this is the wife's Mayael: Maya-El, Kryptonian God. (It should be noted that my meta has a metric ton of sweepers so the gods are necessary; this is also a WiP.)
Oblivion Ring seems weak, I'd rather see Swords to Plowshares in it's place however.
Akroma, Angel of Wrath doesn't last long but that's just my meta talking.
Garruk's Packleader seems weak, Drumhunter seems better. Cheaper cost and much easier to get immediate returns on the turn he is played. Downside is only one card per turn, depends on personal taste.
Hellkite Tyrant seems very niche, Got a lot of artifact decks in your meta? Fine, otherwise it's kinda meh.
Also, have you considered Cream of the Crop ?

Maybe take another look at Survival of the Fittest ? I mean Aggravated Assault goes infinite with Sword of Feast and Famine , so it has that going for it.

Ohthenoises says... #17
Survival of the Fittest is broken on so many levels, I'd never suggest taking it out. If it's banned in legacy it's pretty much a guaranteed staple in EDH.
March 25, 2014 1:09 p.m.
MindAblaze says... #18
I really like Survival of the Fittest . Having it in my opening hand guarantees a fairly reliable game...until it gets blown up...
Ive looked at Cream of the Crop and seriously considered it. What it came down to was it's primary strength is its synergy with Mayael and she's not necessary for the deck to function.
Oblivion Ring is good because it hits anything. Yeah, it's sorcery speed and vulnerable but it can also be tutored for if I need it. I'll keep an eye on it though.
I actually chose the Packleader over Drumhunter at one point after running them both for awhile. I think it's because I then have a pair for Urabrask...not sure if that's a good reason or not. I like the mana source, and I've been feeling like I'm lacking in acceleration.
The Tyrant is definitely niche and it's rocking in my current league with a Memnarch and a Sharuum deck...that may change in the future.
What about Defense of the Heart ? I see pros and cons...

Defense of the Heart boils down to this: Can it outright win you the game when it pops?

If I have a haste enabler on the board...yes, or pretty much yes. I almost always grab some combination of Avacyn, Novablast Wurm and Craterhoof Behemoth ...usually the first two is enough to cement it.
March 25, 2014 5:57 p.m.
Ohthenoises says... #21
Apparently I'm derpy today, go get Xenagos, God of Revels and Novablast Wurm . Even with no haste enabler you now have a 14/14 novablast go boom. Hooray for indestructable.

You would laugh at this series of plays I had last sunday. It almost made people flip tables.
My boardstate consists of Knotvine Mystic , Mirari's Wake , and Mosswort Bridge with a Xenagos, God of Revels exiled to the Mosswort. My hand has Hammer of Purphoros , Elvish Piper , World at War , and Spawnsire of Ulamog . One of my opponents is at full life but tapped out (but he's playing Kaalia of the Vast so he's drawing a ton of hate and all want him dead) and another opponent has Gahiji, Honored One . This is what went down:
Drop the Hammer, then the Piper, then tap the Piper to drop the Spawnsire, now I have 13 power on the field so I activate Mosswort for Xenagod, move to combat, Spawnsire is a 16/20, swing with Xenagod and Spawnsire for 27(18+9 including Gahiji triggers), second main World at War , move to attack, spawnsire is 36/40 swing for 49(38+11), Dead Kaalia player.
I went from a boardstate of near nothing to lethal damage in less than 60 seconds.

Akroma's Memorial out, Aggravated Assault in?
Both are essentially win-conditions...although the Memorial could be a win-more condition...
ChiefBell says... #1
You could literally fill your deck up with super ramp and then big fatties. That way you could do Mayael's ability maybe T4 or 5 or something?
