I actually really love the idea of Waste Not... I only worry that it is more fun than good but Im definitly gonna playtest with it... Have you ever ran it before?

@Icbrgr I have playtested 8-Rack WITH Waste Not. It is honestly my favorite wincon for 8-Rack. Since you're going to be discarding cards from your opponent's hand anyway, it synergizes very well to get you creatures or card advantage that you otherwise wouldn't have. It can be a bit inconsistent as you aren't guaranteed to discard the cards you need to, but I find that it's better to have it than not. Definitely worth considering.

I've had a lot of success with Liliana's Caress.

@DMFF thanks for the reassurance! I know i have a playset in my collection and ill dig em out and give them a try... would you suggest it as a 3x The Rack 3x Shrieking Affliction and 2x Waste Not?

@ChocolatePuma oh yeah I have always loved Megrim and the strictly better Liliana's Caress! I think the only issue I have with those cards is Empty handed opponents in topdeck mode... it feels really good early buy feels bad in the late game... I don't know of any instant speed discard effects outside of Nezumi Shortfang  Flip to rely on Caress? How did you utilize Liliana's Caress? Does it just work better side by side with The Rack than im giving it credit for? I fortunatly have had a full playset for years now and am totally open to trying it out!

Icbrgr The 8-rack I had set up was for Legacy and ran almost no creatures, so having multiple copies of The Rack, Shrieking Affliction and Liliana's Caress on the board ended games QUICK. Ideally, my opening hand would have a couple of Dark Rituals, which would lead into Liliana's Caress, and then a bunch of discard cards, ending in my opponent losing close to half their life total on turn one. Hymn to Tourach is quite demoralizing to your opponent too, I would recommend it.

Icbrgr when I last tested it, I was running 4x The Rack, 4x Shrieking Affliction and 3x Waste Not, though I feel Waste Not could go down to 2.

Liliana's Caress actually could be a decent idea. I know that you mentioned not knowing of any instant speed discard, so I will be happy to show you Funeral Charm. While the other two modes aren't great, running a copy or two along side Caress could be another viable strategy.

oh that's sick! I always disregarded Funeral Charm thinking it was sorcery speed jank... that certainly makes it a lot more interesting now that I look closer at it (I blame the retro boarder lol)... I am coming around to the idea that if not mainboard I will NEED to have some number/combination of Waste Not/Liliana's Caress in the sideboard to bring in for either the opponents artifact hate or Leyline of Sanctity (does anyone run that anymore?).

I sideboard Leyline of Sanctity in my Jeskai Isochron Scepter deck and it will be going into the sideboard of my newest deck I'll be building in paper, Kellan's Delirium-Blade (WOE). It's definitely relevant against Rakdos Scam and burn decks.

Ok today I have been jamming in a crap ton of games with Waste Not.... It's exactly how I remember it and I have such a love/hate for this card. SOMETIMES it works and can draw into the spell that wins the game or provided that life saving/game winning 2/2 token; but when its bad its just terrible... and im assuming Liliana's Caress is worse.

My Issue that I have with it is that I only get 1 or 2 triggers off of it when its in my opening hand and having enabling discard spells to cast. And If I ever find myself in a game state where I have stabilized and topdeck it on Turn four or later... its just a brick whereas drawing into The Rack/Shrieking Affliction either begins the clock of 3 damage/life loss a turn or just greatly accelerates an already existing clock.

Does anyone else have a different experience using these cards? Because I really want to use them but I just feel like either im doing it wrong maybe or just need to move on from them.

It has been a few years since I have last tested this out, like pre-MH2, so I could see the metagame being a bit too fast for these cards. It might be best to move on from them unfortunately because I love Waste Not so much.

Waste Not wants the opponent to be discarding regularly, not just topdecking with an empty hand. Effects that draw before discarding give it the most juice--Burning Inquiry is probably the best option, but cards like Prismari Command or Lore Broker also could work.

Basically, when you get your opponent's hand empty, do you want to play more restictively or more dynamically? Shrieking Affliction and The Rack want an empty hand, Liliana's Caress and Waste Not want discarding.

Heya, this looks like it had some good discussion going. I was wondering what your collective thoughts might be on this little beastie I am testing. It grew from 8Rack.

It's sweet how budget this list is! I have no idea how good 8 rack is in modern right now but I could see it being rough without access to some of the big haymakers that Coffers has, are you finding that you can get under decks like Yawg and Titan? Would love to see some matchup specific info in your description. Sudden Spoiling is a sweet card btw. Have you considered running Field of Ruin, Demolition Field, Sunken Citadel? These cards are affordable and can be pretty effective vs some greedy decks. And of course Urza's Saga tutoring for your rack is pretty banger. Also here's an idea, Aether Vial for Augur of Skulls during upkeep? Probably not the best thing for this deck but in another build maybe!

@capwner I actually just had a FNM tonight and played this deck (but my Shriekmaw/Slaughter Pact/Sudden Spoiling/Grim Discovery are still in the mail... so instead I was running a playset of Bloodghast and some ratio of Liliana's Triumph/Sheoldred's Edict/Augur of Skulls... I will update this deck with the matchup results next week when I get the missing cards in.

Tonight I played against yawg and Rhinos and had a bye.... In the yawgmoth matchup One of the games I just got absolutely blown out by Force of Vigor getting rid of my both The Rack/Shrieking Afflictions and both of us were in topdeck mode but I ended up losing. I went 1-2 for both the games I played tonight; granted I lost but they were close/winnable I swear!

I have been toying with the idea of Cabal Coffers but The real monkey wrench of the deck is Smallpox and Liliana of the Veil... some games I can get 5 lands in play but other times its a struggle to get/keep 3; I think thats why I like Ghost Quarter simply because there isn't any investment to use it.

Yeah the Ghost Quarter thing makes sense, this deck cares a lot about black pips. Hmm other ideas maybe 1 of Tasigur, the Golden Fang as a cheaper delver option/to diversify, probably wouldn't do this unless you are finding yourself frequently unable to cast the Tombstalkers...

Also what about Phyrexian Metamorph to clone racks or your opponent's Ring? As a sideboard card maybe? Seems like it would also be good cloning your stalkers. The Mycosynth Gardens to clone racks too and still can make black!

Icbrgr says... #17

Awesome suggestion! I think The Mycosynth Gardens could probably take the place of Ghost Quarter in the main and move ghost to the side; but there is ALWAYS a Titan/Hammertime player at my LGS I just didn't see them last night. But thank you I'm gonna get me some of them!

I was honestly on the verge of cutting Smallpox but the effect although horrible for everyone makes Tombstalker or any delve creature Tasigur, the Golden Fang/Gurmag Angler really easy to reliably cast; and the 5 toughness was what allowed me to win against Rhinos.

I have done zero playtesting against any decks running The One Ring... I think my main goal is to just not let them cast it at all via discard because I'm pretty sure I just lose if it resolves when they have 4+ life and/or have 1+ card in hand... Shrieking Affliction can still hurt them; but if they draw all the cards that's not gonna get it done...and I'm just not sure what I would do with a copy of the ring... dig for Pithing Needle/other sideboard cards?... Idk I'll playtest it and get a better understanding of it (I have a full playset of Phyrexian Metamorph just collecting dust so why not?)
