Meren Midrange/Combo - Post Vancouver

Commander / EDH

I think Meren of Clan Nel Toth is one of the better midrange generals in the post-Vancouver world of Edh. She generates a ton of value and plays well with a grindy midrange strategy that also allows for a quick combo kill if the cards line up correctly.

The primary cards in this deck are Survival of the Fittest and, which may be the best overall card in the deck, Frontier Siege. Frontier Siege powers up Survival like no other card, creating 4 green mana over a turn. Frontier Siege also allows you to lock the board down with Contamination early and still produce plenty of green mana to cast all of your spells. Cards like Awakening Zone and Bitterblossom allow you to fuel Contamination - and Meren herself can also achieve that end.

The wincons in this deck are loosely stated above - using Survival to create the commonly used Necrotic Ooze Combo with Triskelion and Phyrexian Devourer. This combo can also be performed easily with Buried Alive plus Animate Dead or Life/Death (or any other Reanimate spell), or even with Meren reanimating Ooze at the end of the turn.

Triskelion and Mikaeus, the Unhallowed, the infamous "Trike and Mike" combo, are also in here as well. This combo seems to run better off of Victimize as you can have them both come crashing in from the yard with one spell.

Contamination lockdown is another pseudo wincon. Cards like Devoted Druid, Scorned Villager   and Frontier Siege allow you to ignore your Contamination and continue casting spells as your opponents struggle. Just remember to have a recurring source of creatures to pay the tax of Contamination.

The final wincon is life drain with Gray Merchant of Asphodel or Kokusho, the Evening Star. Playing Gary or the Dragon, saccing it then reanimating it with Meren or another spell is brutal to the table.

Some budget options are in this list because I don't own the cards - but it works quite well. The CMC is low, and I have answers for nearly everything at 2 or 3 mana which is suitable for the tutor package of Shred Memory (which handily grabs us our Survival of the Fittest) and Dimir Machinations (which grabs us our Contamination, Pox or Buried Alive). So far the deck is working very well and is a fun to play.
