Meren of Clan Value (Duel Banlist)

Duel Commander* BG (Golgari)

GolgariLeprechaun

Maybeboard

Meren toolbox/combo is the name of the game. I am still 1 Verdant, 1 Misty, 1 Bayou and 1 Wasteland short of what I would consider optimal, but this is the version of the deck that I am playing right now.

The general game plan is to disrupt my opponent enough and clear the way for a big beater. Your most common plan of attack will be to edict an opposing creature with plaguecrafter/merciless executioner/fleshbag maurader then start repeating that plan with Meren in play. Maybe 5% of your wins will come from actually combo-ing off with Mike and Trike or Mike, walking ballista and any unconditional sac outlet. Individually these cards contribute to your overall game plan anyway so including the combo comes at a very low cost. An early buried alive into mike and trike in the yard can have your opponent jumping through hoops to avoid being combo-ed out, which opens up room to grind your opponent out value creatures and Meren.

Updates Add

Lots of new cards have been printed in the past couple sets that warrant a major update to Meren. GRN especially brought in some great graveyard relevant cards that improve and streamline the deck, most notably Mausoleum Secrets and Plaguecrafter. I have also aquired some auto-include cards to update the manabase a bit. The deck still isn't "finished" but I am 2 fetches, a Wasteland, a Bayou and a Fauna Shaman away from having all of the cards that I consider to be strict upgrades from what I have currently.

OUT:

Yahenni, Undying Partisan

Phyrexian Obliterator

Sidisi, Undead Vizier

Tragic Slip

Grim Haruspex

Noxious Gearhulk

Massacre Wurm

Hostile Desert

Tectonic Edge

Westvale Abbey  Flip

2x Swamp

The lands are just a matter of cleaning up the mana base a bit and making the deck more consistent. Yahenni is a tough cut but I needed to make space and my 3-drop slot is a bit tight right now. Now that I have more, cheaper sac outlets I don't think I need yahenni anymore. Obliterator is too hard to cast, Sidisi is great but often a bit greedy, grim haruspex is too fragile to generate good card advatage in most cases and tragic slip, even in a deck like this, just isn't consistent enough.

IN:

Stitcher's Supplier

Wild Growth

Assassin's Trophy

Mausoleum Secrets

Demonic Tutor

Courser of Kruphix

Plaguecrafter

Tireless Tracker

Shriekmaw

Blast Zone

Dryad Arbor

Marsh Flats

Polluted Delta

Phyrexian Tower

Most of these cards, fetches, DT, dryad arbor, phyrexian tower, require no explanation. Wild growth is just another elf to hit Meren on T3 more consistently. Courser of Kruphix is a relatively big body for a 3-drop with relevant abilities and is just straight card advantage. Much the same can be said for tireless tracker. Blast zone is performing very well for me and having a removal spell on a land is simply gas. Shriekmaw is an interesting case. I only removed the card as a meta call in the first place and now that my local meta is less black-heavy (for context I sleeved up Dark Betrayal for a couple tournaments back in 2017) the card is perfectly acceptable.
