Merfolk & Seaweed Tribal Landfall - 2022-04-11

Commander / EDH GU (Simic) Landfall Merfolk

Pastlebox

Simic Landfall Merfolk! With some Moonfolk visiting.

My second set was Kamigawa and, being quite young at the time, I didn't really understand how bad Moonfolk were. I soon learnt and added green to mitigate the issue with returning my lands. It was a 60 kitchen table deck which stuck around for a year or so then disappeared into memory.

When Kumena, Tyrant of Orazca was released, I tried building a Simic deck based around it but my meta has lots of board wipes. It felt like a bad Simic elf deck.

So, realising the true stupidity that can be done with excessive mana acceleration with Tatyova, Benthic Druid and remember the days of Meloku the Clouded Mirror, I built this. Having experience with Omnath, Locus of Rage, the blue adds more consistency than what red does, though we miss out on the stupidity of Warp World.

But then I discovered the beauty of Narset's Reversal + Swarm Intelligence . This lets me copy spells all day long.
The inclusion of Genesis Wave + Selvala's Stampede has a chance to cheat in the key enchantments, with the later being better to drop Nyxbloom Ancient + Omniscience

Updates Add

2020-09-06 This deck has been substantially upgraded since it’s 2020 version. A fair chunk of the “power” was moved from Momir Vig across to Tatyova. This was from a preference on gameplay.

While Momir Vig is undoubtable strong, its build (and version) is easily outclassed by Kinnan, Bonder Prodigy. The deck can easily switch between these two as the Commander, which is a nice feature: one I try to incorporate into decks. It’s not always possible though.

Momir Vig also has the reputation of being scary and fragile. It works as a very well-oiled machine when it works. Unfortunately, that makes it very predictable and ultimately a bit boring. That’s possible one reason why Kinnan is a bit more fun.

Tatyova’s strength really game into its own with the printing of Nyxbloom Ancient. I’m not sure which is more important to the deck, though I’m tempted to say the later since I’ve resorted to sacrificing Tatyova to Natural Order to find Nyxbloom Ancient on a few too many times.
