Midnight Special

SULTAI - Graveyard tricks

This is one of my favorite current commander decks, it’s really fun and full of synergy.

The goal is to load the graveyard and be rewarded for it. There is a lot of filter style cards as fetches that load the graveyard quickly. There are also board wipes for tricky spots. The speed of the deck is faster with lower top end power. It is ideal for group matchups or one on one, but make sure you are taking out big threats as early as possible.

The stats

  • Synergy - 8/10

  • Speed - 9/10

  • Land base - 6/10

  • Power - 5/10

  • Difficulty level - 4/10

  • Fun - 8/10

  • Aggro - 5/10

Overall Grade - 6.4

Synergy is based on flow and how well the cards work together. All of the cards here work together in fun and interactive ways.

Speed is how quickly you can gather combos and produce a positive board state. Being able to load the graveyard, play cards directly from it, and search out lands fast makes this deck scream.

The land base is how effective land/ mana is. With limited true ramps you focus more on graveyard tricks for your mana base. Those can be stifled and stall you.

Power is based on top end creatures capable of winning the game or going into infinite power combos. This deck is more about playing utility early rather than stompy creatures.

This deck is shockingly easy to pick up and learn after a few games. The difficulty level reflects that.

As far as fun is concerned, this deck gets so political at times that the interaction with other players is truly great. You have the ability to counter or destroy board states and creatures, plus you’re deck speed is way faster than other players. You may not be the threat at the table, but you’ll have answers that other players will bargain for.

Aggro, this stat is like a MMORPG. Everyone knows the deck that gets the most attention is usually the one that goes out first. This deck with its high CMC commander looks innocent at first and gives you time to evolve. Moderate aggro, starting low and ending relatively high.

As a side note, this deck has most of its costs tied up into overpriced lands. A quick budget option is to remove those. The deck will still play in a similar way, but you’ll have to find better ways to deal with land interaction. One main goal for the deck now is to cycle and reuse fetch lands to stay on an impressive curve.
