Introduction

Welcome to my midrange infect deck! Midrange and infect are two words you probably never expected to see in a single non-commander deck. Infect is one of my favourite mechanics, but I was never a fan of the bursty, all-or-nothing style favoured by current infect lists. My style is controlling the tempo of games through Assassin's Trophy , Inquisition of Kozilek , and other disruptive spells, then dropping a few creatures that can end the game fast. Combining these two seems like a no brainer. This deck isn't exactly budget, but it definitely doesn't cost an arm and a leg like other lists will. Most of the price comes from the landbase, and the rest from the suite of disruption spells that commonly see play in Jund or Junk lists. I hope you enjoy your stay, and remember to +1 if you like the deck!

***PSA*** As a returning MTG player, any and all suggestions are very helpful! Help with manabase, sideboard, and strengths/weaknesses would be greatly appreciated! I'm planning on eventually building this after my other deck deck-large:an-alternative-jund Check that one out if you are a fan of Jund but dislike playing format staples like Dark Confidant and Tarmogoyf . Thank for taking the time to check out my deck and have a great day!

This deck was originally purely Golgari midrange. With the printing of Ignoble Hierarch however, a red splash has become extremely easy. This allows us to splash for Kessig Wolf Run , an incredible infect enabler. It synergizes particularly well with Phyrexian Hydra , giving it some much needed evasion.

This deck is divided into five different categories.

Land- The source of the win

Disruption- Cards in this category are meant to keep us in the early game, allowing us to screw our opponents plans up while slowly building up mana to drop our big threats. Hand disruption can also punish opponents who keep greedy hands, so you can sometimes just win if they don't know you're running it.

Infect- These are our sources of infect counters. The most important cards since this is how the deck wins.

Evasion- These are cards that allow our damage to go through most or all blockers. This is achieved through menace, trample, and protection.

Utility Often, these are flex spots or cards that don't necessarily add to the strategy of remove and infect, but are here because they are proactive.

Here I am going to go over each card in the deck and what it's purpose is.

Overgrown Tomb : colour fixing, fetchable...it has it all. Price shows how useful it is.

Verdant Catacomb: fetch. So pricey, but so worth it.

Snow-Covered Forest : Not as good as Snow-Covered Swamp ...

Snow-Covered Swamp : The superior basic land. Not necessarily the best art, but it's covered in snow. That means it is perfect.

Assassin's Trophy : Very, very versatile spell, instant speed, two mana, destroy target permanent. Tons of cheap disruption with the same downside as Path to Exile .

Fatal Push : 1 to kill cheap creatures. Seems worth to me! As well as that, with fetchlands you can kill bigger creatures at instant speed!

Inquisition of Kozilek : One of our best turn 1 plays, better than Thoughtseize early because there is no lifeloss. Allows us to get rid of our opponents early options and lets us stop them in their tracks. This hits most relevant cards in Modern.

Thoughtseize : Worse than Inquisition of Kozilek early game, better late because it isn't limited by CMC. Very good at ruining our opponents late game plans and can really screw over other midrange decks.

Phyrexian Crusader : for a 2/2 sounds terrible in a format dominated by Lightning Bolt and Path to Exile , but the protection from white and red is super helpful. Like all creatures, dies to nonred nonwhite removal, but works very well as a beater. First strike with infect is really cool because it applies the -1/-1 before the main damage phase, meaning if someone blocks with a 3/3 Phyrexian Crusader survives. Useful to know for those fringe situations.

Ignoble Hierarch : Colour fixes, ramps into lategame threats, pumps to let creatures hit for more infect- this card does it all.

Hand of the Praetors : Infect boost, also provides an alternate wincon to combat if combat isn't an option. The infect counters can add up without people noticing. 3 power is also a third of the damage we need, so overall a good card.

Phyrexian Hydra : Big boy beater, usually gg if you get a Rancor on him, and without rancor still a huge threat that needs to be dealt with immediately.

Phyrexian Swarmlord : Not as huge body as the hydra, but much better sticking power. Also synergizes well with Hand of the Praetors . Right now it's in as a 1-of to test, but I can't see myself picking up anymore than 1 because of its manacost.

Rancor : 1 CMC, recurs, trample, and pumps our creatures? This sell does absolutely everything we need.

Apostle's Blessing : Evasion and protection for essentially 1 mana can swing games instantly. Very useful against G/B/x types.

I don't currently own this deck, but like other midrange decks this probably fares pretty well against combo if you can force them to discard important combo pieces, and pretty well against control if you can make something stick. Aggro probably doesn't go very well at all due to their extremely fast clock and hard to disrupt game plan. If you can survive to the point where they are topdecking everything, you can probably win.

Blood Moon is the bane of any non-red deck that runs nonbasic lands. Other than that, Aggro and Control are things you want to look out for.

Step 1. Force opponent to discard key combo cards or scary removal or big creatures with Thoughtseize or Inquisition of Kozilek
Step 2. Remove scary permanents with Assasin's Trophy, Fatal Push , etc.
Step 3. Spread the Sickness. Infect.
Step 4. ???
Step 5. Opponent scoops and you go to game 2.

Thank you for taking the time to check out this deck, and I really hope you enjoyed it! I have always had trouble with manabases and sideboards, so all help with that would be appreciated. Honestly, any suggestions at all would be MUCH appreciated. Have a good day!

BONUS!

If you wanted to reduce the price of the deck, first thing is always change the lands. They are by far the priciest part of the deck. Other than that, budget replacements for Inquisition of Kozilek and Thoughtseize exist with Duress and Despise , they just have different downsides. Assassin's Trophy and Fatal Push have tons of budget replacements, all with different downsides. Just cheap removal. Thanks for checking this deck out, all suggestions are loved and considered!!!
