I used your deck as inspiration to try and build a 3 color budget EDH deck, but could not get it below $20 haha Zur Super Budget EDH (Below $30)

Its really hard to make a good budget deck in multi colors. The land base you need to make it good ends up costing too much money.

boddie & Ayle:Yup, unfortunately good lands are the most expensive part of MtG.You can still get a solid 3 color manabase for no money at all though. I can probably piece together a manabase for even a 5 color deck for extremely little. It would however have one of the following drawbacks: It would cost a lot of life to keep the tempo up, it would be slow (etb tapped), or unreliable. I'd personally go for the lifecost route if I were aiming for a competetive deck, entering tapped is simply too slow.

SerOrion: Both of those are awesome cards, and used to be in the deck. I took them out to make room for draw and tutors, since I didn't need as many combo pieces as I first had.

Anyways, the original reason for my post: WHY am I not running Snuff Out? How has this card escaped my notice for so long? I knew it existed but never considered it. 4 life, destroy a nonblack creature, instant speed, costs 0 mana, SEVEN CENTS.

Damn, a full hour of revisions and I have managed to pull down the price of the deck by $2 on the TCG checkout list to the right.

Looked through all the editions and changed the card art in the decklist to be from the cheapest one! Now if only I could make the swamps cheaper...

I fee like it's a bit cheaty that the deck is only this cheap due to not including Mikaeus in the calculations, but otherwise great,I'll end up making it for a 1 on 1 commander deck

Warloean: You caught me, however, that is the decks TCG MID value, and doesn't really reflect the decks price. So it functions as a fine way to not get my deck judged at first glance.

Feel free to do the math on TCG LOW pricing (remember to use the cheapest print of each card) and you will see the deck is below $20 with Mikaeus included, at least it was when I last did a check :)

Also, in a 1v1 version I recommend adding all the hand disruption you can.

XxPeanut_PandaxX: It's already in the deck! :)

It isn't in your list of sac outlets in the combo list. Didn't read entire deck list I guess.

I purchased the deck for 14 dollars. came out to 23 after i purchased all the new full art lands but that's still very fair for a deck that clearly isn't tier 1 but still competitive enough to vs any tier 2 commanders.

Some removal ideas that should be cheap from BFZ Complete Disregard, Bone Splinters, Titan's Presence also Gruesome Slaughter is another cheap game win the moment it resolves if you have a sac outlet and mikaeous out on the field. mike and slaughter.

October 31, 2015 10:25 p.m.

Sleazebag says... #14

redchance: Unfortunately, Gruesome Slaughter would require my creatures to have haste, and would only work with the colorless ones. My problems with most of the removal from the new set is that it is either too situational, too mana intensive, or requires additional conditions like Titan's Presence and Bone Splinters.

There is plenty of good removal I don't run that I would add before and of those cards, like Doom Blade.

And yes, this deck can't beat Tier 1 competetive decks like Scion Hermit Druid, Karador Boonweaver combo, Stax decks etc, but even in most competetive metas this deck will be able to win frequently. In casual metas this deck will simply crush.

alright fair enough how about mana Mystifying Maze my particular meta goes up against Zur the enchanter so this land is useful in this setup but not in everybody's case.

Sleazebag says... #18

redchance: Yeah, Mystifying Maze can be a great budget land. Although it's still $0.5 which is too much for me!

I HAVE TO BUILD THIS! My meta is about combo Brago, Prosh, and other decks that just go off in a heartbeat. Beating them with this is gonna be awesome. THANK YOU!

+1 from me!

Things I love about this deck:

. Mono-black - I've been a big Mono black player for years - so deadly!

. All the combo redundancies - the redundancies in the combos add redundancy to the combo potential of the combo redundancies. (see what I did there?) - and the variety of infinite, kill everybody, draw all the cards, get all the life gain, etc. is quite appealing.

. And, of course, the budget - I actually already have nearly every card in the list in my collection. I had to shell out for Mik' himself, and a Mutilate, but some other ones I have functional stand-ins for. I also have a few of the more powerful non-budget goodies.

I'm going to try it with fewer combo pieces, and more tutors, I think.

Another strategy I think is good is to not use Mikaeus as commander.

It makes the deck too obvious. I'm going to try with Sidisi, Undead Vizier As commander to hide my intent, and use her exploit ability to search for Mikey when I have the other combo pieces in play or in hand.

A couple questions:

  1. What do you think of the Exquisite Blood + Sanguine Bond combo in this deck? It's a gimmicky alt-win-more combo that is completely unnecessary, but either card on its own could combo with an infinite (or just large) Mikaeus loop.

  2. I want to use Crypt Ghast, but it has w/b hybrid mana in the extort ability. Is that okay for color identity purposes? Is it because the mana symbol is in the reminder text?

Alright, time to sleeve this monster up and go make people cry!

Sleazebag says... #22

MagnusMTG: Answering number 2 first since it's the easiest: Yes, since the symbol is inside the reminder text, it is not part of the card itself and thus not a part of its color identity. Crypt Ghast can be played in mono black. I used to run it but it became a bit too expensive lately.

As for the first question: It's definitely not worth it in THIS deck. As it is a 2 piece combo with too expensive pieces.

However in a deck that runs sidisi, Undead Vizier, I'd easily run it as I can tutor for it whenever as another win-condition route.

If you want to run Sidisi, I REALLY recommend you add: Buried Alive, Triskelion, Necrotic Ooze and Phyrexian Devourer. What's important is that you also run ALL the reanimation spells possible, as well as cards like Undying Evil (Cast it on Sidisi, tutor twice!)

  • Play Sidisi
  • tutor Buried Alive (If you have a reanimation spell in hand)
  • play Buried Alive, put Triskelion, Necrotic Ooze and Phyrexian Devourer in the graveyard
  • cast Animate Dead (or something similar) targetting Necrotic Ooze
  • Exile cards from top of library and remove +1/+1 counters until everyone at the table is dead.

Remember, the creature dies INSTANTLY if it has 7 power or more. So if you exile a card with too high CMC, just don't let it resolve and keep on exiling other cards.

Anyways, glad you enjoyed the deck! :)

Regarding this build. I have got to say you have non stop stayed true to form. Thank you. I have used this build and your not so budget build and have built a pretty solid deck. It has fared well. But as always I need to play it more often.

Thanks for the tips and for the confirmation re: Crypt Ghast. :-)

I think I have a Buried Alive in my 'unearth' zombies deck (Sedris, the Traitor King and friends)... I have Triskelion, Animate Dead (and Dance of the Dead - also fun), and Undying Evil already in.

Yeah, the Bond+Blood combo, like I said, is completely unnecessary, but I've pulled it off before a couple times using a Grixis commander deck, and it is very satisfying to see the looks of utter despair on my opponents' faces when it hits.

I'll try it with and without. I want to focus mostly on tutoring and mana-ramping to get some combo to stick quickly and reliably.

I think my main worry is counterspells and other disruption. Someone blowing up my artifacts or exiling things could completely shut me down if I can't recover quickly enough.

MagnusMTG here are, some cards that work very well with this deck and Sidisi, Undead Vizier as the commander:

Chainer, Dementia Master

Mimic Vat

Corpse Dance

Sheoldred, Whispering One

Cast the commander and exploit her to herself, and then put her in the graveyard to make these work. (Mimic Vat is a last resort as it can cause your commander to become permanently exiled, use with caution.)

If you want, take a look at my deck, it uses Sidisi, Undead Vizier as the commander, just not so budget focused. http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/mikaeus-the-unclean/
