Artful Dodge goes really nice in decks like these. Also more ways to mill like Mind Sculpt or Breaking .

Thanks, I'll try to get my hands on those!

This deck looks really awesome. But it looks like it could suffer against and aggro deck. A gruul or any red or green aggro deck could have 2-4 creatures out by turn 2 with Burning-Tree Emissary and some other two drop. Maybe you should think about running 2 or 3 Essence Scatter and a few other cheap counters. With my aggro deck Gruul Bloodrush Aggro 1 will normally have 2 or three 2/2 creatures out on the first turn. If one of those was a Skarrg Guildmage , next turn i would blood rush one creature and give it trample with either Ghor-Clan Rampager or the guildmages ability. That right there could stack up to about 9 damage to about 12 on one turn unless you get a blocker. This is all circumstantial, but as this is my first deck and there are many other with far greater experience than I, they will probably have a better chance to do many combos. You will most likely see at least one aggro deck during your FNM so I would find ways to counter them.

Oh and i would get rid of Mizzium Skin for the Mind Grind and a guild gate for Nephalia Drownyard

Ok, I'll sideboard out Mizzium Skin and think about swapping in the Drownyard. Thanks a lot!

I think that you could take out some (if not all) Codex Shredder s and instead use Trepanation Blade this would deal additional damage as well as mill your opponent.

Hope this helps!

I originally had a Trepanation Blade in here, but it never seemed to do me too much good for some reason. Personally I prefer the Codex Shredder if only for how low cost it is (can get it out for a mill on turn one) and its second ability which I find very useful late game.

Having said that, I like the idea of doing that little bit more damage, so I might test it a little if I can get my hands on a few more of them!

Glaring Spotlight sided in would be nice! Mind Sculpt , Increasing Confusion (which is not that expensive), Wight of Precinct Six (which is really, really cheap now) and Fog Bank help greatly.

I love that -X/-X card, as I did not know about it and will add it to my Dimir Mill :)

If you side in Lazav, Dimir Mastermind vs decks that have powerful dudes, you could have a wonderful time.

In general get cheaper milling spells :)

Personally, I'll take Breaking over Mind Sculpt (one card more for the same CMC), but do you have any idea what I should change out for it?

Also, I am trying to keep the deck mostly within the RTR block (apart from a couple of lands and Invisible Stalker who is too good to leave out) so I'm not too keen on picking up Fog Bank and Increasing Confusion despite them being quite good cards (especially Fog Bank which I love). I also feel that Mind Grind probably does a better job than Confusion anyway, but that's just me.

I do have a Lazav which was in here for a bit, but I found him a little inconsistent, but maybe I should reconsider!

Wight of Precinct Six seems like a pretty good idea though, again, I'm not entirely sure what I should lose to put him in... any suggestions would be excellent!

Thanks!

Too bad that you won't go out the RTR block... as Jace's Phantasm would provide you with a big hitter... fast :)

Whispering Madness is nice, but too slow to mill. Remember that most aggro decks will beat the crap out of you in the first 3 turns. By the time you get a hit with that, then cipher you could be dead :(

I found that Paranoid Delusions milled a bit too slow for my liking (I ran 4 with 4 rogues)... My main Mill spells are Breaking , Mind Sculpt and Mind Grind in standard. I would add in Thought Scour over the delusions to mill two and draw one. Faster and gets you one card. Remember that we also need mana open to counter or kill stuff. 4 mana to make one guy unblockable is a bit too steep... so I would add Glaring Spotlight for over that. Also you have 2 defender creatures, which you have a 22% chance to get them. I would rather have a more aggressive Vampire Nighthawk , which forces your opponent to either kill him, or think a bit harder when to attack.

So I would remove:

Door Keeper for Wight of Precinct SixWhispering Madness for Mind SculptsPilfered Plans for Thought ScoursBalustrade Spy for BreakingRogue's Passage for Glaring Spotlight

@Fizzz

Ok, I like your suggestions! One thing I should say though is that I'm aiming for a Cipher-Mill deck here, the reason I like Paranoid Delusions is that it can potentially trigger my Consuming Aberration quite a bit, which I figure works out at higher value than Breaking or Mind Sculpt but maybe that's just me. I also think it works very well with Invisible Stalker which often lets me mill that extra 3 cards per turn for the rest of the game, although I don't have much experience playing against aggro, so maybe I should change it.

I like the idea of Glaring Spotlight over Rogue's Passage although I currently only have one. I'll put it in and replace the Passage with another land.

I'll remove Whispering Madness which is a bit of a shame, but I totally get your point, it's probably not great for fast milling.

Now, I really like the idea of Vampire Nighthawk and Thought Scour but again, they're not in the RTR block. I know I really shouldn't be bothered by this, but it was just something I tried to stick to so I didn't end up putting in every single card I thought was cool!

As I do already have a slight alternative for Thought Scour (although I honestly do know that it's a lot superior. I mean, it's even an instant!) I might not put that in, but I think I can probably stretch to a couple of the Vampire Nighthawk if only that it should prevent people from attacking in to me, which defenders tend to do less.

I'll change it around, see what you think of my decisions and thanks a lot for the suggestions, I find them really helpful

I don't think it's just you, MikeLaserbeam, I'm also playing Paranoid Delusions over Breaking and Mind Sculpt for the same reason you do. Triggering Consuming Aberration with a mill spell is always good and it sometimes make your opponents crazy witch is always a bonus. I don't know why you are playing 1 Deathcult Rogue , I guess it's only until you get your missing Invisible Stalker s. I have no more suggestions for now since it's really hard to evaluate a deck without testing it, but I like the fact that you are trying a cipher/mill deck and for that reason, I am giving you a +1.

Thanks a lot! You're absolutely right, Deathcult Rogue is only there as a substitute for an Invisible Stalker and because he was the lowest cost "unblockable" I could think of in the RTR block.

Thanks for the +1, I appreciate it

as far as aiding your Consuming Aberration , try Artful Dodge or Essence Harvest .

Those are good suggestions, but I really am trying to stay within the RTR block. Not for any particularly good reason, but more because it's a bit of a challenge I've set myself. Having said that, I'd be far more likely to go for Artful Dodge of the two of those because it fits with the whole cipher thing. Thanks for the advice!

All the suggestions I was going to make have been made already for the most part. I'm trying to make a mill deck out of a Dimir intro pack and a bunch of boosters and its hard... A lot of people don't seem to like this card but I have a Sands of Delirium I like it. A few other good mill cards are Psychic Spiral Chronic Flooding

If you wanna gain life after milling Crypt Incursion is interesting.

Jace's Phantasm is epic in a mill deck, but I understand you're not going there, and like someone else said Wight of Precinct Six is also great.

Glad to see another miller!I like Sands of Delirium but it is out of the RTR block (kind of my thing, haha)

Personally, I don't like Psychic Spiral I can't see it being useful more than once per game, and how much could you really mill them for with it? In my opinion, it would never be enough for 5 mana.I like Chronic Flooding but have left it out, mainly because when using it against friends they always seemed to get around using the land I'd enchant haha.

Crypt Incursion is definitely an interesting idea, I might look into that!

Thanks for the advice, good luck milling!

Oh yeah, good call. Too bad though.

Balustrade Spy is a mediocre miller for a 4 drop. And I have a couple Woodlot Crawler s in my sideboard cheap 2 drop.

Milling is hard, but the look of frustration on the other persons face is always worth it.

Holy bananas that Crypt Incursion is nuts!!! I WILL get some of those! Could potentially mess with Wight of Precinct Six , but still nuts!

Yeah great card for a mill deck.

I know I know... not out of the RTR block, but Undercity Informer + Undead Alchemist seem to work pretty well together :)

While this card is not really "mill" Far could help delay your opponent for a turn or so. It's a bit more control-esque than mill, but it could clear the board when facing a creature heavy deck. If you fuse, that could potentially be another creature in the graveyard for Consuming Aberration .

Hope this helps!

Woodlot Crawler looks pretty good! I removed Balustrade Spy because as you said, it really isn't that great for 4. I like the idea of paying 2 for a creature that can't be blocked by some decks, I'll definitely look into getting some of them.

Fizzz

I totally agree, those two combo seriously well! Though again, similar to Crypt Incursion that kind of goes against Wight of Precinct Six which is a card I do quite want to include now!

Vertigo

I have a single Far / Away at the moment, which I want to include, though having only the one has put me off it. I have, however, just ordered a Dragon's Maze booster box, so hopefully I'll get some in there. If I do, I'll definitely try to fit them in, but do you have any recommendations as for what I should replace with it?

Thanks SO much for all the excellent feedback guys!

I would either get rid of Pilfered Plans or Devour Flesh to make room for Far / Away , whichever isn't making the cut for you. Mill/card advantage vs. removal/potential life gain.
