Champion of the Parish might be good in here.

switch doomed traveler with Champion of the Parish . He will definitely be better than the traveler.

This deck strangely did epicely at tonight's fnm, Angelic Overseer won me a game simply because she could survive elish norn and had flying. My mvp for my sideboard would have had to be Silent Departure , it saved my ass from an angelic Mirran Crusader twice! and it didn't interrupt my aggro tempo thanks to the flashback!

I agree with Syinide, Champion is strictly better for this cind of deck. Othervise, I like your deck and want to do it!

The below two paragraphs are the long version of this: I chose Doomed Traveler over Champion of the Parish due to a removal heavy meta.

My meta for the past few weeks was very aggro. The control players started fighting this by running 4 doj's or black sun's and usually a Ratchet Bomb or two so I've used Doomed Traveler as a harder to kill creature. Also I have playtested with the champ instead of the traveler and it had shown unless I drew 3 champs by turn 2 and the mana to play em I was seeing only around a 4 dmg increase by turn 6. Usually I've found that my game wins have been made by large bursts and most of the wins only sees 3-4 humans hitting the field.

And another reason I choose Doomed Traveler over Champion of the Parish is because it's hilarious to do a turn 1 traveler, 2 honor of the pure, and then 3 crusader and suddenly watch my opponent either drop a black sun or spend two removal so they can make me sac my crusader.

Sigh Champion of the Parish failed miserably in my fnm meta, at most he got in for 5 dmg, but normally he was easily controled or simply a very dead draw.

Tonight my deck did surprisingly well, first round I played against my township mirror that had 4Sword of War and Peace mainboard, Angelic Overseer allowed me to present lethal on turn 5 in the 2nd game. second round I played against a big red deck, game one I won with a turn 4 play of a Grand Abolisher equipped with a war and peace sword. Game two Angelic Overseer got past his grounded creatures. Round 3 was against the world's winning build of kessig wolf run, both games I'll have to admit, I got lucky with him being mana screwed with a hand full of titans (but Angelic Overseer still made some game winning appearances!). Fourth round we just intentionally tied, then we just split the winnings among the top 4.

I don't quite know why but it seems most of my meta mysteriously became almost devoid of burn spells, which allowed me to fight to the top 4 again and spit the winnings. I ran into 2 variants of wolf run ramp, the same u/w control deck twice, and ended up tying to township tokens (which I really should have lost to if my opponent played less defensive).

testing the deck out with Thalia, Guardian of Thraben

so far it seems drafting humans in dark ascension is going to suck, but constructed humans might be really great. Snapcaster Mage and like to mill themselves.

after playtesting for a while id like to make 2 points

1) Inkmoth NexusMTG Card: Inkmoth Nexus should probably just be another land or a [ghost quarter]. as a singleton threat i dont think the deck needs it.

2) Thalia, Guardian of ThrabenMTG Card: Thalia, Guardian of Thraben is fairly powerfull but the deck cant afford to drop her early if you have a sword or either enchantment. that and sandbagging her probably means anything she would stop is already in play.

if you want to try her after dark ascension hits think about switching out Honor the Pure with Mikaeus, the LunarchMTG Card: Mikaeus, the Lunarch or maybe Accorder PaladinMTG Card: Accorder Paladin. you could also replace the swords and Angelic DestinyMTG Card: Angelic Destiny with more creatures. an additional geist or thraben doomsayers could fill the curve nicely.

+1

I know I should probably cut Inkmoth NexusMTG Card: Inkmoth Nexus, but it's just performed so well in FNMs, often either being killed off early, being another sword carrier (I even gave it Angelic DestinyMTG Card: Angelic Destiny once for an out of nowhere win), and I've used it quite often to save my creatures from a sac effect.

I've been playtesting Thalia, Guardian of ThrabenMTG Card: Thalia, Guardian of Thraben for around 200 games now and she hurts my opponents alot more than me and she seems to have a "kill me at all costs or lose to a bunch of creatures" sign on her forehead.

And as for dropping Honor of the PureMTG Card: Honor of the Pure due to Thalia, if I drop her turn 2 then Honor of the PureMTG Card: Honor of the Pure would be a 3 drop that I'd play on turn 3.

Thanks for the +1!

Well I rode the pre dka version of this for FNM and got to a 4 way split in the top 4 (got a Liliana of the VeilMTG Card: Liliana of the Veil in my prize packs!). The deck ran extremely well, but most of my opponents got bad hands so the only data I could get was on a b/r/g kessig wolf ramp deck which apparently = Mirran CrusaderMTG Card: Mirran Crusader wins due to the lack of burn and Inferno TitanMTG Card: Inferno Titan. It also didn't help that I double Sword of Body and MindMTG Card: Sword of Body and Mind milled away all 4 of his board wipes on game two.I also think that it's been confirmed that Oblivion RingMTG Card: Oblivion Ring will be sitting in my sideboard for quite awhile, as any planeswalkers I ran into were easily dealt with and Leonin Relic-WarderMTG Card: Leonin Relic-Warder did it's job well.

Well, I'm not sure if you've considered already, but Oblivion RingMTG Card: Oblivion Ring is a nice catch-all when it comes to removal.

Grand AbolisherMTG Card: Grand Abolisher and Thalia both mainboard seems kind of redundant if you're not against a control matchup. I think against a non-control matchup, Elite InquisitorMTG Card: Elite Inquisitor could perform much better.

Oblivion RingMTG Card: Oblivion Ring used to be in my mainboard, but playtests with Thalia often resulted in me wishing they were Fiend HunterMTG Card: Fiend Hunter or Leonin Relic-WarderMTG Card: Leonin Relic-Warder.

As for having both Grand AbolisherMTG Card: Grand Abolisher and thalia mainboard my meta is full of decks that gripe and groan at these cards and their usefulness goes beyond hosing control, plus their utility value doesn't decrease as quickly as Elite InquisitorMTG Card: Elite Inquisitor's does the farther I get from turn 2, also most players that pack kill spells will wait to board wipe to kill the inquistor while the other two usually eat a removal spell.

Just a note: I See you have one Razorverge ThicketMTG Card: Razorverge Thicket mainboard for a Corrosive GaleMTG Card: Corrosive Gale sideboard.

Two things I would say:

  • Either mainboard them both, or sideboard them both, if you want to keep them both. Otherwise, point 2:
  • Just one source of green mana is nearly irrelevant, since the chances of having the thicket out and untapped for you to use its green mana on the single card that may need green mana are rather low. In the end, since it's green phyrexian mana, I would do away with the thicket and find a more useful land, or a Pristine TalismanMTG Card: Pristine Talisman or something similar.

lol I had that leftover from when I had Ray of RevelationMTG Card: Ray of Revelation in my sideboard... some people in my meta seem to be deck idea jumping like crazy since dka... I just hope they don't all settle with birthing pod decks.

What about Mentor of the MeekMTG Card: Mentor of the Meek? You could use some card draw to keep your hand full in case of board sweeps.

I tried him out for a bit, but I found him to be just too slow (note aside from Fiend HunterMTG Card: Fiend Hunter all my cards above 2 cmc can win me the game pretty quickly) and I've found that this deck really just wants to curve out as well as it can for the first 4-5 turns, then if my opponent is still alive pump out spirits and whatever I top deck. On another note I've noticed at fnm my opponent's still mistake this deck for it's faster Champion of the ParishMTG Card: Champion of the Parish sibling... or they play around Mana LeakMTG Card: Mana Leak even though I've been using this deck for almost every fnm after Inisstrad hit (for a few weeks I had fun with solar flare...)

March 6, 2012 6:13 p.m.

I went up against a deck similar to this. Was hard to beat. Day Of Judgement and won me the match. He'd flop down his creatures, enchanments, and I swept the board with DoJ. Then played Garruk and killed him with tokens, or used Birthing PodMTG Card: Birthing Pod to fetch something nasty. Your Grafdigger's CageMTG Card: Grafdigger's Cage mainboard is an excellent idea...

I placed 2nd with this at FNM pre-DKA:

Naya Podblade of Tool

Yeah my fnm meta was full of pod decks for awhile... then everyone started using pod hate and aside from 3 or 4 of them they've moved to zombies which is also good news to Grafdigger's CageMTG Card: Grafdigger's Cage!
