Get some "experience" cha cha cha-ing your way to a victory with this spell-slinging bonanza of a deck!
Mizzix of the Izmagnus is a uniquely powerful commander that allows you to do absolutely broken things like cast Expropriate and Time Stretch for the extremely discounted cost of . If you love playing decks that are similar to solving a puzzle then give Madam Mizzix a try. There are so many different lines of play with this deck that I could write a book about them all, so the best thing to do is sleeve it up to see just how fun it is to pilot this busted commander.
It is important to note that you can stack Mizzix triggers in order to skyrocket your number of experience counters early on. At zero experience counters you can string together spells to get more value. For example: you can cast Gitaxian Probe and with the Mizzix trigger on the stack you cast another spell like Gut Shot to get another Mizzix trigger, netting two experience counters without tapping any mana. Then you're off to the races! This can be done with numerous combinations of spells, including casting a counter spell on your own spell for X=0, which can really help you going forward.
There are a number of "extra turn" spells in this deck that, in my "experience", casting just one of them usually leads to a win. It is better to read these spells as "Untap all your lands, Draw a card, and you may play an extra land this turn". When you cast these spells for just it is extremely potent.
With experience counters discounting all your spells, including alternate costs and additional costs, there is an infinite combo that Mizzix can achieve. With a mere four experience counters the combination of
Pyretic Ritual + Reiterate
you can gain infinite mana. Then you can cast any one of your burn spells and copy it with Reiterate to annihilate the table. This combo works with any ritual spell because with Reiterate you cast it for its Buyback cost to repeatably bring it back to your hand. Conveniently this combo is tutor able with the card Firemind's Foresight so it can often come out of nowhere.
If you don't want to be "that guy" with an infinite combo, you can still win without it. It takes a little more effort, but if you can manage to cast Finale of Promise for X=10 and one of your rituals in the graveyard you can generate a large number of mana to use for a burn spell to nab a win. For example: With ten experience counters and one mana you cast Seething Song generating . Use to cast Finale of Promise targeting the ritual from the graveyard (and any other sorcery of your choosing). This will net you eighteen total . From there you can cast the extremely efficient burn spell Fall of the Titans for its Surge cost for X=12 going down to sixteen floating . With the remaining mana you cast Reiterate for its Buyback cost a maximum of eight times. This is a total of 108 damage, which can be more than enough to steal a win!
Intuition is another powerful card in this deck. The packages of cards can vary wildly from game to game, but I find that getting any combination Past in Flames, Call to Mind, Mystic Retrieval, and Firemind's Foresight is the same as tutoring for three cards. You then proceed to cast Firemind's Foresight for another three cards. You don't see value like that everyday! Especially if you cast all those cards for the maximum discount because of the experience counters.
High Tide can generate a ton of in conjunction with spells like Frantic Search, Turnabout, Reset, Reality Spasm, Time Spiral, and Finale of Revelation. Cards like Rewind and Unwind achieve this as well, but require a few more hoops to jump through. Don't be afraid to counter one of your own spells with them if you absolutely have to.
I opted out of artifact removal in order to maximize the amount of juicy spells in this deck. That being said, you can run into some serious problems if certain stax pieces end up resolving. For example: Damping Sphere is nearly impossible to fight through. Other cards that you should be wary of are Rule of Law type effects, cards like Stranglehold, anything that gives an opponent Hexproof like Leyline of Sanctity and Imperial Mask, graveyard hate like Rest in Peace and Leyline of the Void, or can't lose the game cards like Angel's Grace can make finding a win difficult to nigh impossible. Anti-blue hate cards like Boil and Choke can be back breaking as well.
Finally when playing this deck protecting Mizzix is of the utmost importance! If Mizzix is removed, or worse stolen, this deck struggles to gain any footing and can leave you twiddling your thumbs as everyone else plays magic. Be wary of passing the turn while completely tapped out. Counter magic is your best friend!
As always, recommendations are very welcome. I'm looking to make the most effective/efficient deck I can.
