I have been working the past month to make a deck(s) that can take advantage of my favorite creature of all time- Geist of Saint Traft. I began by thinking of some aggressive cards that I have enjoyed playing recently. This lead me to Brimaz, King of Oreskos. I asked, what do these two have in common. The answer- White Tokens!
I also noticed that Geist of Saint Traft has a ridiculous interaction with one of the Gods from Theros:
With Iroas, God of Victory, Geist of Saint Traft can't die while attacking which basically removes Geist's biggest draw back.
While searching gatherer, I noticed that there are a large number of token creating spells. This lead me to the inclusion of Young Pyromancer.
I filled in the deck from there as an aggressive token deck that falls more in the vein of an tempo style izzet deck rather than white weenie. Here is the breakdown:
The Creatures
Grim Lavamancer- Super aggressive one drop that has nasty efficiency. He can beat face or clear the way.
Young Pyromancer- She takes advantage of the token creating instants and sorceries by making more tokens! She seemed like a perfect fit, but has been the weakest link in testing so far, so let me know what you think.
Brimaz, King of Oreskos- This is an example of what some people like to call a "pushed" card. It punches you in the face with value. 3/4 and a token for 3 mana.....Yes please! He is a white creature and make white tokens so he fits perfectly in the deck.
Geist of Saint Traft- The man, the legend. He is the most efficient beater in the history of the game..... in my opinion :). I love this card and am always looking for ways to utilize it. His interaction with Iroas, God of Victory is AMAZING and hasn't been utilized yet to my knowledge. Until now.
The Spells
Lightning Bolt- Best red card ever. 3 damage for 1 mana.
Lightning Helix- Most efficient life swing in the game. 6 life swing for 2 mana.
Path to Exile- Best removal in Modern.
Boros Charm- Protects my tokens or offers the last 4 damage at instant speed. A great combo trick in this deck.
The Token Creating Spells
These are some of the more important cards in the deck. They can quickly do a lot of damage; can chump more agressive decks; and are pumped by our enchantments. The deck runs on these:
Raise the Alarm
- This is the best of the token creating spells. Two tokens for two mana at instant speed.
Spectral Procession- Flying tokens are a big plus and this makes a bunch of them.
Entreat the Angels- This is a pet card of mine and is on my top 5 favorite cards of all time. If my decks even has a remote chance of playing this card I do it. If you cast this card for it's miracle cost you will almost always win the game.
The Other Spells (aka The Buffs)
Sword of Feast and Famine- This can be any sword. Whichever you prefer. Tokens love carrying swords so I wanted to include one.
Honor of the Pure- Makes Geist of Saint Traft and Brimaz, King of Oreskos bigger and pumps all of our white tokens.
Intangible Virtue- Vigilance and pump for our white tokens.
Elspeth, Knight-Errant- Superb with Geist of Saint Traft and can also create white tokens if we have Honor of the Pure and/or Intangible Virtue on the board.
The Utility Lands
Utility lands play an important function in this deck. Preventing damage to either Brimaz or Geist, giving them first strike, vigilance, and/or haste can also make or break a game. With such great utility lands in our colors; there really is no reason not to use them!
Between these and the "buffs"; Geist of Saint Traft can hit the board and hit for 10+ damage!
Summary
This is a very fun deck to play. It is still competitive as well. The deck is a great option to the aggro players who still like to have choices and tricks to play at instant speed rather than just casting creatures and turning them sideways.
As always, let us know what you think. If you test the deck, we appreciate any feedback. We value the TappedOut community member's feedback greatly and have had a ton of help from you guys and gals in the past. There are a few members that are always there to help and we thank you. +1's are appreciated if you think the deck warrants it. Thanks for looking and go play some magic!
