demonicgrizzly Tarm could potentially get to a 7/8? Would he be able to get that high in my deck? Too bad he's $140+ per card, and I would probably want 4. How many Wooded Foothillsbare you thinking, 4? I could easily cut Reflecting Pool for the Cinder Glade I would just need to find room for the Wooded Foothills, maybe drop the Fire-Lit Thicket and see if I can cut 2 more cards somewhere?DuBie15 well one or two decks had random artifacts (Ensnaring Bridge or a talisman that helped with the mana curve. All of the other artifacts I saw played towards the deck theme, and yes I have seen a Lantern deck so I definitly want to be prepared for that. I guess it comes down to what is more effective, destroying an artifact or enchantment and dealing 2 damage in the process or destroying and artifact or enchantment and having the ability to do it again from the grave. The direct damage fits the theme but the flashback ability comes in handy against multiple artifacts. Unless maybe I can sideboard Ancient Grudge instead of Shattering Spree? What does everyone else think?

It's sometimes hard to get goyf that big but if there is a creature, instant, sorcery, in any graveyard he is a 3/4. What's nice about goyf is it's not just your graveyard, so he can easily get to 3/4, even 5/6 really quicka

6 days away from my first tourney and I've made a few changes and posted and update. Pretty happy with how the deck looks and the only change I'm still considering is added 2 Pithing Needle to the SB. Restoration Angel and Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker made an appearance again and I feel like I need to be better prepared than just Ensnaring Bridge. Also I have seen Lantern control so this addition will help with that as well as a few other decks I can't think of now. Lemme know what you think and keep the advise coming, it's appreciated!

Quick update, as mentioned I have removed the 2 Shattering Spree and added 2 Pithing Needle. With the addition of Ancient Grudge I think I have artifacts/enchantments under control and can use the slots to combat the combo based decks floating around my area. Let me know what you think.

chapin316: So yesterday when you said "6 days away from my first tourney" you mean next week correct? Also, is this tournament going to be an FNM-style event that is more casual, or something larger like an IQ or higher event?

I meant that this decks first tourney will be Tuesday the 15th. It is mostly a FNM place with an occasional GP qualifier every now and then. I'm hoping for good things.

Groundbreaker is a lot of fun, since you're going Gruul.

Don't play Shock in a burn deck. It's a bad card. Play 4 Eidolon of the Great Revel and 4 Monastery Swiftspear. Cut River Boa. Mainboard Slagstorm isn't very good. You definitely want 4 Destructive Revelry in the sideboard instead of Ancient Grudge. Lava Spike is much better than Forked Bolt. Cut Incinerate for Skullcrack. Add the 4th Atarka's Command. I'm guessing that Goblin Guide is too expensive, but if you can get him, play 4.

You may want some basic lands. Path to Exile and Ghost Quarter are things!

Also I think Lightning Blast is a bad card for that CMC, what about Lava Spike? Or maybe Brimstone Volley. I dunno.

If you really want to keep using Shock, upgrade it to Burst Lightning

Oh! I just did remember. Flame Javelin

Someone else suggested some basic lands but to tell you the truth I have not see any Ghost Quarter or Path to Exile. I like lightning blast because I feel like my burn spells don't deal enough damage to creatures (there's been multiple times where I've held a bolt in my hand and a creature with toughness 4 is beating me down). Plus 4 damage for 4 mana isint TERRIBLE, just a little slow in modern. A lot of people have suggested Lava Spike, I just wish it hit creatures too. Brimstone Volley isint bad, but wouldn't 3 mana for 3 damage also be considered slow? I do like Burst Lightning and will probably swap it in for shock.

Given you mana curve, I would run AT LEAST 20 lands.

LordOfMishap says... #16

You should definitely put Fling in here. Check out my version of this deck Face!. Good luck!

March 27, 2016 11:06 a.m.

Actually 4 damage for 4 mana IS terrible. Especially when you have Boros Charm

March 27, 2016 11:22 a.m.

LordOfMishap says... #18

Attack with Ball Lightning than Fling for up to 12 total damage. Not terrible.

March 27, 2016 12:05 p.m.

That requires five mana, and you want the game to be over before you get to five mana when you are playing burn

March 27, 2016 12:10 p.m.

LordOfMishap says... #20

Yes, that's true.

HSF117 says... #21

Apparently I missed the Tarmogoyf debate... Since you aren't running any fetch lands, it isn't very good. We'll it could be better anyway. I would definitely suggest adding some fetches if you're going to run Tarmogoyf.

March 27, 2016 1:02 p.m.

chapin316 says... #22

Why are fetch lands needed to run Tarm?

March 27, 2016 1:16 p.m.

HSF117 says... #23

chapin316: Since you're not running fetch lands and you aren't running Shard Volley, when are your lands going to voluntarily be in your graveyard? Sure you can say that you are going to rely on your opponent to run them since goyf checks their graveyard too but you can't rely on an opponent in any given situation. It gives goyf that extra +1/+1 early in the game when you run fetches.

March 27, 2016 1:28 p.m.

chapin316 says... #24

Yes that is true. What lands would I take out and how many fetches do I add? And for the record every single game I've played so far (19) my opponent has played at least 1 fetch land so it's not unheard of.

I would probably take out the Karplusan Forests and replace them with Wooded Foothills but that's just me.
