What's the point of the snow lands?

Oh, and I just read what I wrote, and sorry if it sounded aggressive. I just wanted to point out: In my meta, lots of people play MBD, so... Phyrexian Obliterator !!! I would honestly stick to Thoughtseize over Inquisition of Kozilek due to the fact that you can't dispose of gigantic awesome fatties. Also, I would suggest Surgical Extraction . it's HILARIOUS on turn one with a Thoughtseize . Great deck by the way, and +1!

No real point to snow covered lands....someone very early on asked us to add them for some rogue deck situation they were in so we said sure :). In our version on paper: we just run swamps...I'll change them because you're the second person to ask.

Yea.

Oh no... I didn't take it that way scorpix...you always give great advice and you've always been professional and kind in your advice. Its tough because things can be taken the wrong way when inflection isn't there (and there are plenty of trolls and "know it alls" on here; but you are NOT one of them). We even understand some of the more "blunt " members/comments on here; as most of the time they are only trying to help the deck get better! I appreciate the concern a ton; because it is important we make a great environment to brewers to feel comfortable putting their craziest ideas up! Your too good scorpix!

And you're right...turn one Thoughtseize into Surgical Extraction is hilarious!

Aaaand THIS is why I hate modern- $1800 to build a legit deck. Oh no, not just a mostly-standard with a few older cards, just EVERY GOOD CARD IN RECENT HISTORY!!!!

March 9, 2014 12:03 p.m.

@ trf6 that comment is really unnecessary. Please refrain from such things in the future. If you do not like Modern than simply do not comment. Furthermore, Modern can be played "cheaply". Unless of course you invest in fetch lands, Goyf and Bob.

March 9, 2014 12:16 p.m.

trf6....it is definitely and expensive format often. I'd hazard to say this is more than just a collection of the best cards ever. If that were the case; I'd certainly add Tarmogoyf and a few others :)

I assumed your comment was a light-hearted one about the format (rather than a dig on the deck). If that's the case; I feel your pain! I've lost a lot of weight not eating because I spent all my money :) j/k. We were fortunate that our love for modern led us to buying the staples 2 years ago. They weren't cheap; but they were a heck of a less than now! We bought most of the crack land sets between $9 - $13....it was just different....no one played modern (or it least it felt that way :). We begged our local stores to do Modern at all (which none did until recently). You are right though....prices have gone NUTS!

They should drop a little when the "Modern Season" ends. That will be a better time to buy. Hope this helps!

i would recommend Consecrated Sphinx over Batterskull as a late game bomb. not a 5/5, but it has flying.

the main point, obviously, is the massive card draw without losing any life. Plus, most modern decks focus on card draw other than the initial one per turn. So if he can't be answered right away, they will dig for the answer. Unfortunately for them, that just SWARMS you with cards in the meantime as they draw 2 per turn trying to kill it netting you a minimum of 5 cards before you main phase hahah.

It's just a thought, and I think it won't be expected. Plus the extra 1 mana makes up for itself from the massive aggro draws next turn.

What do you think?

March 9, 2014 2:10 p.m.

Dreno33....I love the idea! Consecrated Sphinx is an AMAZNG card....I'm actually suprised it hasn't seen much play (but at 6-CMC I can understand little).

Batterskull has been unreal in this deck...the big pros for it are:

  1. Gains us life (which is much needed later in the match as we do ourselves quite a bit of damage).
  2. Can attach to our smaller guys.
  3. The biggest may be that it can be put back in our hand. Any late game removal can be "countered" by simply putting it back in our and to be re-cast.

There's a few more; but at this point everyone knows the positives of Batterskull ...you are right though...it is a known quantity. Consecrated Sphinx would be quite a bit more surprising :)

I will most definitely give this a serious spin in testing today (and the foreseeable future). I have no doubt there are probably several matches where it is a better bomb. I'll see if the one extra mana and loss of lifelink is offset by the Flying and card draw....

As always...you've provided another great suggestion Dreno33....thank you sir!

Maybe you could try Blustersquall . It's prety good in the sideboard.

Wait, sorry, I meant Countersquall .

March 9, 2014 6:52 p.m.

I really like that scorpix....I'm cleaning the sideboard now and testing all kinds of cards; so this is a definite choice....thank you! This most likely will make in there :)

Slaughter Pact is definitely usable for the sideboard.

If you still are having problems with affinity Vandalblast is the perfect answer. Thanks for the great games. and conversations last night!

On second thought maybe that's a little slow.

I have access to about every card on this list with the exception of dark confidant... what in your opinion would be a decent replacement? I was thinking a couple izzet charm for the options it gives towards the meta. Also how was your testing with Sygg over Bob?

March 10, 2014 3:28 a.m.

RedSoxFanKy...Vandalblast is not a bad card at all. We currently run Shattering Spree as its a little more versatile (although after 6-7 artifacts are up you'd be happier with Vandalblast :)

scorpix....Slaughter Games is a great idea for the board. It was a "snap add" for our testing! Thank you!

ScottKindle...Sygg is the best substitution for Dark Confidant there is. The only obvious thing making Dark Confidant better is that he draws a card on turns you don't do damage (but the downside is that he costs a good amount of life). There may even be a few matches where Sygg is superior to Bob.

If you're running Sygg; you may want to switch out on Rise /Fall with another Blightning and both Vampire Nighthawk s with two Vendilion Clique s if you have them. This just allows for a few more chances of hitting the "3 damage threshold" and since you're not as worried about life-loss, Cliques may be better at that point. All in all though; the deck should function pretty similarly. I hope this helps.

Alright sweet time to get some cliques haha... i think i can get away with nighthawks for now as i.am running bolts and tar pits for the late game. Thanks again and +1 on this time to sleeve up :)

Slaughter Pact , Archive Trap , Pact of Negation , Pact of the Titan , and Mindbreak Trap definitely usable for the sideboard, too.

Do you guys have a twitch channel or youtube videos with this deck? I would love to see how it runs in general.

March 12, 2014 1:57 a.m.

ScottKindle- We have been thinking about making a video for some of our brews. We are trying to get the tools together to record on MTGO, but since we don't have all of the cards online that we have in paper form we may start with real videos first. We don't have any twitch/videos yet though. We might just purchase the decks online and record some dailies or something. We will keep everyone posted if we do. Now that I know some people would actually be interested in seeing such a video it adds a little motivation to do so! Thanks again.

So i feel this deck can do well without fetches and just run a river of tears or 2 and maybe a reflecting pool or something...
