I'm seriously thinking of getting some of the pieces I'm missing to build this. Or at least the main board portion.

How resilient have you found it against heavy disruption decks and counter magic?

Amazing deck +1 but sideboard explanation please

Isn't Fertile Ground strictly better than Utopia Sprawl, because of the enchant forest vs enchant land and the choose a color at time of tap vs when played? It probably trivial, but it seems like it could be relevant sometimes... or am I missing something?

The big difference is the extra colorless in the cost. Utopia Sprawl being one mana makes a huge difference when playing the green devotion decks. Also, you can run both!

grandpappy hit it on the head. The 1-CMC is a very big deal. The best start you can have worn Green Devotion is turn one Arbor Elf, turn two Utopia Sprawl into Garruk, into 3-mana worth of cards. That can only be done because Utopia Sprawl costs only .

Also, both Arbor Elf and Nissa require you to play a lot of Forests; so it's not as big of a downside as it may be in other decks.

But you are absolutely right that there are upsides to Fertile Ground too.

First I want to say this; this deck is mind-blowingly fun even just to gold-fish, I think I was doing that for about an hour on it's own. I love it. I can't wait to try it for real at a time that's not 2am in the morning.

With that said, there are some concerns I would like to address with this deck. The mana-base seems like it needs adjusting. I'd definitely cut out at least one of the Nykthos. Possibly two. I get that it's a complete powerhouse when we get devotion going, especially with Garruk, but holding two in my hand while one is on the field is the ultimate feel-bad. Too many mulligans because of too many copies of this, and too many dead draws.

I'd also take out a single Wolf Run as well. With all the card draw and G-Waving we're doing, I'd like to think there's a pretty good change we'll rip one by the time we need it, and before we get to that point we're going to want to improve our changes of a T1 green source as best as we can. I'm far too tired to come up with better replacements at this time but I'd love to brainstorm with you in the future.

I'd also take out a single copy of Abundant Growth. I love it for the devotion pump/cantrip/combo with curio to keep getting cheap card draw for G. And while it does both of these functions beautifully, this is all it does- and unless we need that extra point of devotion, I often find that by time I've found my 3rd A. Growth, I'm starting to wish I found something more... Substantial.

The last thing I would like to address, is Garruk. I totally get he's our bread and butter, but again we can only play one at a time, and we can't even chain him with himself using Cloudstone. I'd recommend taking one out and putting something else in- another pw maybe? I have no idea. It's just another case of the feelbads when I'm playing one Garruk, and I've got two in my hand.

Other than that, cheers, you're a lovely person and this deck is fantastic. I'm off to bed!

I tried cutting Nykthos in my other green devotion deck, but it rarely worked out for me. There were too many games where I just never saw it. Yeah, having more than one in the early turns sucks. But after the first two turns or so, an extra Nykthos can actually help get your mana moving. As you can tap the first Nykthos for mana, lay the second one (and destroying the first), then tap it for more mana.

The Abundant Growth is there for the card draw with the Cloudstone, but I agree with you... until the Cloudstone is in play, and then it shines so bright it hurts.

When I was playtesting this (using TO's page) I kept running into problems with the version of the deck that has only 3 Cloudstone's. I'd have everything for the combo, except that, and wasn't able to go off. I don't remember having that issues when there were 4 in the deck; though there were times when I'd draw more than 1, and that sucks too.

I wonder if there's some sort of green or artifact looting that can help, or land fixing without having all the Nykthos. Sylvan Scrying wouldn't be great with Wave, but it'd help with the land fixing (if only it'd put the land into play). Knight of the Reliquary is probably too slow.

Super interesting points grandpappy and hoggyhay222...I always take thoughts and suggestions from those who have played the deck extremely seriously...

On the Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx front; I wouldn't advise removing any unless you add a few cards that tutor for lands (i.e. Sylvan Scrying...it's just so important to the combo and so wildly powerful in this deck that you often want one as quickly as possible and having two is not always a bad thing...you can simply tap one (or trigger it if your devotion is past 3 or more) and then play your next Nykthos! I do think you are right about Kessig Wolf Run though....I've dropped it to 2 copies. I will look at some other potential utility lands; however a Forest may be just as good as anything :)

I kind of agree on the Cloudstone Curio front as well. It's extremely powerful in this deck. Obviously for the combo you probably want as many in the deck as possible; however even just for card draw and/or "digging" loops; it's often worth it even without the rest of the combo pieces. I am currently testing three; however you may be right that four is just the better number (since generally your nearly always happy to see it).

One card that I've thought of in the past that can work as both a land and artifact "tutor-is" is Ancient Stirrings. it can hit either; and at it is easy to cast and recur with Eternal Witness...

I've got a ton of testing results. Ill post them on the primer for the deck of and post a 'recap" on here as well!

August 12, 2015 8:47 p.m.

I'm also very open to running only three Abundant Growth and running another card (even a powerful 1-of). The Abundant Growths are perfect in the deck because you can loop them, they pay for themselves with Devotion, can be useful with an early Eternal Witness (you just enchant a fetch land, crack it (putting the Abundant Growth in the yard), cast Eternal Witness, grab back the AB, and re-cast it for another card. This isn't somethihng done often, but I've used it several times (as you want to build up your devotion quickly; but don't want to cast a "naked" Witness; and this solves that problem). Of course, it also ensures you have red when you need it (and can be bounced to make for multiple red mana); and also allows you to tap a colorless land for Green....for it has a LOT of use in the deck. Having said this, there is every possibility that you would still take advantage of all of these uses 99% of the time with playing only 3 copies! On top of that, this opens up access to another car option...

What card should we attempt to try out if we play 3x Abundant Growth? I'd love to hear options!

P.S. Currently just switched it to 3x Abundant Growth and 4x Cloudstone Curio

CurdBrosBrewingCo - If you're looking for a 1-of that could replace Abundant Growth, my suggestion would be Beck / Call. Obviously you may want to add in a Breeding Pool or two but it will give you a huge amount of card draw if you do or don't happen to have a Cloudstone Curio present. Also, it's totally up to you, but I would drop Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx back down to 3 and bump Kessig Wolf Run up to 3 because it can be a game winner when you don't have your combo. It can screw up your mana base occasionally, but so can 4 Nykthos, so it's not like you're losing anything.

Also, if you want to go down another path entirely, you could bump up the Fertile Grounds, take out some Birds of Paradise, and add in Magus of the Candelabra. But that is a whole other venture.

Love this deck! Thanks for posting man. I also agree that 4x Harmonize somewhere may help the deck go infinite more often...and that's what we want ;)

There was actually a similar mechanic to Devotion from Eventide called Chroma. You might like this card. Primalcrux. With the infinite 2/2 or 3/3 combo just to devastate your opponent you can play a couple free Khalni Hydra. Fun fact these two cards will give you the most devotion of any cards in modern.

hoggyhay222 says... #13

If we take out that extra Cloudstone Curio and Abundant Growth for two Ancient Stirrings, we can use the stirrings to GRAB the Curio. Also applies to taking out the 4th Nykthos. So that solves.... Like... 3 problems at once?

hoggyhay222 says... #14

And Lightning Bolt in the sb, as it is the best 1 mana removal in the format.Gaddock Teeg blues? No more.

And SpiritFangz I probably wouldn't add a fatty beater like those to the deck because it gets in the way of our goal. Kessig Wolf Run does what Primalcrux does on any body, Khalni Hydra won't likely be free because realistically we won't go that wide.

+1. Pretty good variation of Gruul devotion. I also have one of this type of deck here: Green Devotion : NyxWave. Its a more stompy variant than a planeswalker variant, but you could find interesting cards or inspiration from it.

Titaniome your list looks good, but tbh your deck is a very different beast from this one.

For the infinite tokens entering the battlefield you can do what my deck the one that used to be in second did add Altar of the Brood or Impact Tremors for infinite damage or mill to each opponent.

Overall I like the deck, I've been playing around with my own version of the deck, and one card that I I've found works well is nylea's presence as a one or two of. It gives you card draw, devotion, as well as allowing you to untap nykthos with arbor elves.

August 14, 2015 12:40 p.m.

kchedges says... #19

warhawkstriker - He actually had Nylea's Presence in the deck to begin with as a one of but replaced it with Fertile Ground. I think the added benefit of getting extra mana with a single land is a greater benefit. Especially because it interacts well with more than just one card. (i.e. Arbor Elf + Garruk Wildspeaker + Nissa, Worldwaker ). Great suggestion though.

August 14, 2015 1:20 p.m.

Tons of great ideas and thoughts! I'll try to touch on each one individually:

  1. SpiritFangz....I have played with both Primalcrux and Khalni Hydra in the past in other devotion decks. I especially like Khalni Hydra in Elf Devotion decks! I'm not sure how great of a fit they are here....you really want your high drops to be walkers. The added devotion would certainly make for some interesting turns though :)

P.S. I like your standard deck. It has a fun combo :) I ran a Cloudstone Curio deck with Purphoros, God of the Forge for some time; and Impact Tremors just adds another great tool (like Purphoros, Outpost Siege, etc.)

  1. warhawkstriker....Nylea's Presence definitely has some very powerful synergy in the deck. When this is paired with the fact that you have a very low risk with the card (as it replaces itself); it is a GREAT card for this deck. It's one that I started with and a card that may make its way back into the deck. It helps both Arbor Elf and Nissa, Worldwaker untap Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx (which of course can lead to crazy things). I initially removed it mainly because (a) you have to both have Nylea's Presence AND either Arbor Elf or Nissa, Worldwaker to make the card worthwhile...having said this, it can be used to "loop" and draw cards, and it does allow much more easily for an infinite combo with Nissa, Worldwaker and Xenagos, the Reveler...it is a great card in the deck, and I wouldn't fault anyone for playing it.

  2. Titaniome....that is a strong Green Devotion build. It's a little different "plan" than this one; although we both take advantage of the "core" of Green Devotion (Arbor Elf, Utopia Sprawl, Garruk, Nykthos, Wave, Witness/Command, etc.) to quickly ramp to the powerful things we want to do early. That is what I love about Green Devotion. There is just so much you can do with it!

I actually am the OP / run the Modern Green Devotion thread/Primer on MTG Salvations so I've seen a TON of ideas as it pertaining to Green Devotion.

  1. I have never really like Harmonize in this deck. I am biased though, because I'm not the biggest fan of the card in general in Green Devotion. I feel like you really want your card draw to be in the form of "permanent card draw' like Elvish Visionary, Genesis Hydra, Abundant Growth, etc. The deck utilizes Genesis Wave, Genesis Hydra, and Cloudstone Curio; so you really want to be able to bounce, dig for, and/or wave into your card advantage. I don't think it is a terrible card by any means. I just think we have better options.

Current Thoughts/Choice to Make

I'm currently working on the following choices:

  1. Ancient Stirrings....is there a place for it in this deck? It does potentially dig for Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx, Kessig Wolf Run, Cloudstone Curio, and a couple of our good sideboard cards...is it worth simply removing a Curio and/or another card to add to it.

  2. 19 lands vs. 20 (especially if playing Ancient Stirrings. I'm actually finding that often times I have more lands than I want. It is important to hit every land drop, however. It may be worth playing 2x Kessig Wolf Run, 3x Nykthos, and 3x Cloudstone, and 2x Ancient Stirrings.

I've also been thinking about playing a main-deck Karn Liberated; however in truth there aren't that many "slots" available...the deck plays REALLY well the way it is; so I really only want to make changes that make it more consistent. I'll post my most recent testing; as well as my FNM and tourney results from the last two competitive times I played the deck (they will be up tomorrow).

Thanks for all of the help and ideas everyone!!! I'm certain they've improved the deck (even the slightest improvements can be a great help). Now all that comes next is starting to win some dailies/local tourneys, etc.

I feel like some of your abundant growths and other cards like that are kind of a waste of space because they don't add additional mana when tapped...I know they add devotion but I feel like something like Market Festival would be more useful in the end...(market probably isn't the best option out there it was just the first that came to my head...:D)

August 15, 2015 8:27 p.m.

Ninjadude51 says... #23

Also, it's amazing that I was the third upvote on this and it's come so far...:D

August 15, 2015 8:28 p.m.

Ninjadude51....I know! It's crazy :) I bet when you voted it to a 3 you thought it would maybe get to 10 :) haha. In seriousness, though, I am sooo grateful people up-voted the deck (because the more upvotes you get, the further up the "Top" section it goes; which means more people see it (which is in the end all we are trying to do...to get as many people as possible to see the deck, improve on it where they can, and play it in their local tourneys!)

As far as the Abundant Growths; I would say that it in particular is the toughest card to see the benefit of easily. By itself, it doesn't do a ton (lliterally just replaces itself and helps fix colors (which is not THAT big of a deal in a 2-color deck). In play, however, it does so much more. The main strengths of Abundant Growth in the deck are:

  1. It can be played both early and late. Early, it adds to devotion, fixes your mana (which can be useful in games where you start Forest, Kessig Wolf Run, etc.). Late, it replaces itself while still adding one devotion. It is super important that you get to the magic "4" devotion as quickly as you can (as this is when Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx begins being very valuable. 1-drops go a long way in aiding this.

  2. It can easily be "looped" to draw cards. I can't tell you how many games I've one simply by drawing 3+ cards for a few turns just looping Abundant Growth with my extra mana.

  3. It (along with Utopia Sprawl can help mitigate the devastation from board wipes. If the Abundant Growth's were a creature; it would be very difficult to get devotion back after an Anger of the Gods, etc. There is nothing better than playing a Genesis Wave for X=5 the turn immediately following a board wipe because your devotion is at 5+!

Having said all of this, I am certainly open to testing other ideas. I never really shoot down any thoughts until I've tested them (as many things happen when I actually play a deck against the meta that I may not have foreseen...so I never pretend to know exactly how a card/idea will work out). I could replace them with a mix of Fertile Ground and/or Nylea's Presence or even Elvish Mystic's! It is certainly worth a second look at minimum. Great thought!

August 15, 2015 9:37 p.m.

P.S. The list I'm currently testing runs 19 lands and a 1-of Ancient Stirrings. Thus far I've had no issues with mana (but it will take at least 100 games before I feel comfortable with it). Ancient Stirrings is truly an interesting card. It:

  1. Hits both of my important lands (Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx and Kessig Wolf Run) and simply hits a land (which makes me feel much better about running only 19 :) )

  2. Digs for Cloudstone Curio as well. This allows me to play three a little more comfortably (as between Stirrings and Genesis Hydra I will often have a Curio if and when I need it.

  3. Hits many of my important sideboard cards, including Defense Grid, Damping Matrix, Karn Liberated, Pithing Needle, etc. It makes me want to play more colorless/artifact sideboard cards :)

Anywho, I can't say with certainty that it is a "must add" (as I have only played 30 or so matches with it as is); but there have at minimum seen some positives and interesting interactions from the card. The deck is so close to what I would consider it's "perfect" place for the meta; so these next 50+ games should help quite a bit.
