UGH....

enter image description here

May have to look into this :)

Untapping an Arbor Elf AND a Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx seems pretty strong at 4 mana for 5 loyalty!

And the -2 can be used to find wincons after you go infinite. I like it!

Damn, nice deck. Would hate to face it, even my sliver rush can't usually win by turn 4. I've never taken a second look at Cloudstone Curio, I thought it was pretty bad.

September 7, 2015 4:07 p.m.

The sideboard worries me though. What decks do you use them against and how well do they usually work?

September 7, 2015 4:35 p.m.

WhiteKnight251...the "draw a card" clause on Nylea's Presence is somewhat important because it can be "looped" with Cloudstone Curio. Prismatic Omen, however, is a super interesting idea (as it makes certain that no matter what your Nissa and Arbor Elf's can untap Nykthos. It's certainly worth a second look.

Figag...An interesting aspect of a vast majority of Green Devotion decks is that you absolutely destroy any deck trying to play "fair" Magic; but struggle against the hyper fast combo decks (Twin, Amulet, Ad Nauseum, Goyro's Griselbrand, Storm, Tron to a lesser extent, etc.). This is due mainly to our lack of interaction and the fact that the deck is really a turn 4.5 deck (even though there is a potential turn 3 win, most wins are turns 4 and 5 vs. other combo decks). We are more resilient than other combo decks (and a little more consistent); but we give up about a turn of speed for these superior areas.

Against most "fair" match ups I literally bring nothing in. The sideboard is meant to try and offer "pure hate" to other combo decks in the field. Shutting off twin, Primeval Titan, Griselbrand, Infect (via Spellskite), etc.) is the goal of the board. I'm actually down to one Bonfire of the Damned (as now with two Ugins I've had a LOT less trouble...llike none...with "swarm" decks); but I haven't figured out 100% what is going to fill up the slot available.

I am 100% open to suggestions though. The best cards tend to be ones that slow down or "turn off" some of the faster combo decks in the format. Primal Command is in there as a great card against Burn, any Graveyard strategy, and the random mill decks you run into. Courser of Kruphix actually made it so I feel almost like burn is a good match up for us now (which has been nice as it is one less "fast" deck to worry about).

As I said though, I'm totally open to any sideboard suggestions you have.

I absolutely love this deck and I am on my way to saving up for the deck. As it is quite an investment for me I really want to learn as much as possible about it from a pro before I dump my cash. My request is that if you could make a mulligan "info" section. I think that this would bring help to lots of players that look at the deck (including myself.) Again I really love the deck and hope to be sleeving it up soon. +1 for sure.

Finnithy, I suggest building a proxy version of the deck before you buy! I love the green devotion archetype, and most of these cards fit into that mold, so I was happy to assemble it; but I totally get the cost issues.

On the new Kiora, I initially had the same thought.

That was quickly followed by the image of my combo being disrupted by a lightning bolt to the targeted creature. It will open the combo up to a new kind of hate, making it more fragile.

I doubt Kiora buys us enough for the loss of resiliency she will bring.

CurdBrosBrewingCo, I am glad that I can help! This deck summarizes a lot of my personal favorite things to do in Magic: ramping up, lots of permanents and doing interesting combination of things to bring stuff out. I absolutely love this deck and thanks again for making it and continue to make effort for improvements!

For the change you made, I am wondering if we should run 3xNylea's Presence instead of 3xFertile Ground. The deck ramps up fast already, so if we are replacing Elvish Visionary, Nylea's Presence will keep its drawing role in the deck.

Regarding side board, how are we dealing with Tron deck? Are we generally faster than it? Maybe some land hate in the side board can help? e.g. Sowing Salt, Ghost Quarter, or Molten Rain. Also, against super fast decks like elf deck or ramp decks similar to us, will All Is Dust worth a slot in the side board? Similar to Ugin, the Spirit Dragon, as you mentioned in previous comments, it helps to clear up the board but keeps lands and curio.

Digging on the Deck! I bring up one card for your consideration. Umbral Mantle. Check out this deck I've been screwing around with. Overgrown Umbral Elf ($30 Turn 3 Infinite) Not sure if its worth trying to make it fit or if it's more of a build around card, but the stupid amounts of mana available with Arbor Elf and enchanted lands or Nykthos, not to mention the +2/2 stacks is insane. Just a thought.

Hi Curdbros! I'm keeping my eye on devotion decks (especially your's) for quite a while and the more i look at them the more i wonder if Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx is that necessary to achieve our goal (in this case to hit infinite mana combo) when the majority of our cards has only one green devotion. Wouldn't it be better to cut them off and add some Overgrowth instead of Nylea's Presence forced synergy with Arbor Elf and Nissa, Worldwaker? Keep up the good work!

September 11, 2015 3:11 p.m.

Hey ZerouZ...it may be worth cutting to 3x Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx; but they are definitely worth being in the deck. I can't count the amount of times Nykthos (or in some cases two in one turn) led to me pumping a creature by 20+, hitting a wave for X=10+, or even playing through multiple Remand and/or Mana Leaks :) You could probably play the deck with success without Nytkhos; but you will lose out on a few lines/plays...of course, you won't have the situations with an opening hand of two Nykthos where you kick yourself :) This, however, is rare.

The idea of switching out Nylea's Presence for Overgrowth is certainly worth testing. The Nylea's Presence are nice given their synergy with both Nissa and Arbor Elf; and it is great to have 2 more options for "enchantment looping" with Cloudstone Curio....so there are definite pros you would be losing. The extra ramp, however, may end up being worth it.

I would say that the "enchantment loops" are the hardest things to see without playing the deck. Being able to utilize your excess mana to draw extra cards, however, has won me a lot of games! Having said that; Overgrowth is amazingly powerfull and if it lets me cast things a turn sooner than it may be worth the potential card advantage. It's all a delicate balance in this deck for sure!

September 11, 2015 11:43 p.m.

Finally feel like I've come up with a sideboard plan that can deal with the entire Tier-1 meta (that I have trouble against of course...the "Fair" Tier 1 decks don't require uch, if any sideboard slots)....

The big leap was a card I've worked with for a long time but never got quite right...Ancient Stirrings. With one in the main deck and one in the sideboard, I now have enough to feel comfortable.

The second big leap was seeing someone (who's name escapes me) play a Life from the Loam package. It immediately got me thinking...I mentioned it in the Green Devotion forums and another member said something else important. He said, "if you play that you also can recur lands (since land destruction is one of the good ways to hate on this deck)...I was sold. After testing, however, I found that Crucible of Worlds was the better choice over Life from the Loam...it allows me to "loop" Ghost Quarter against decks like Tron, Amulet, etc. that are problems...and to give me a way to kill Blinkmoth Nexus's...I have LOVED having this in the baord.

And to boot...it can also be "tutored" for with Ancient Stirrings :)

With this, the deck now feels completely solid through and through. ksong's suggestion of Courser of Kruphix was the biggest main board change I can honestly say was the best improvement in quite some time. With a solid board; there now doesn't feel like a single spot I'm not happy with. I'm going to start playing dailies to see if I can get the deck "out there" in the meta.

Having said all of this, I really do hope you keep providing ideas and criticisms. Ancient Stirrings and Courser of Kruphix were both ideas from right here on TappedOut; so I'll never shoot down or be unappreciative of any idea or criticism.

September 13, 2015 11:01 p.m.

P.S. If you don't hit your Crucible of Worlds....there are situations where I recurred Ghost Quarter with Eternal Witness as well. There was one game where I bounced Eternal Witness with Cloudstone Curio in one turn to destroy two different Tron lands...

P.P.S...ksong, I'm running 2x Fertile Ground and 2x Nylea's Presence...you can really go any way you want (i.e. if you want to run 3 of one and only 1 of the other you will be fine)....but right now I'm trying 2 and 2.

Wow. That sideboard plan is borderline genius. This whole deck is. I love it. I tip my hat to you, especially because your grixis rise / fall deck was the inspiration for thealexgnan's deck which was the inspiration for my deck, so without you I wouldn't have the magic deck that I do today. Thank you guys.

Hey,

Love where the deck has gotten. Seems a lot more powerful and easy to win besides just the combo which i feel is a must. You have a lot of awesome interactions i can see and have a few questions/suggestions.

First:I love the Ancient Stirrings + Ghost Quarter and Crucible of Worlds sb idea against tron and bloom but do you think Blood Moon would be easier to set up and as/more effective? You could also bring it in against a wider variety of decks such as grixses who run a decent amount of basics but have kinda tight mana requirements (aka cryptic). That being said i may still use your idea with Ancient Stirrings in the sb to find key hate cards like spellskite and whatnot.

Second:Since you have a lot of enchantments what do you think about running Eidolon of Blossoms over Nylea's Presence main board because that seems to be your weakest enchantment. It makes sure you dont fizzle after a genesis wave and is just great card value, especially with cloudstone.

Third:So this idea may be a bit cute but if you do end up running Eidolon of Blossoms you could try out a 1 of Yeva, Nature's Herald sb. Its good against control by itself and if youre playing against a removal heavy deck you can flash your creatures in to bounce the ones being targeted with removal to save em and even flash in your Eidolon of Blossoms and Courser of Kruphix to save enchantments which are being targeted. Like i said this may be a bit to cute but its an idea.

Those are my ideas, hope they help. But as is this deck looks amazing and fun to play. Good work.

CurdBrosBrewingCo, can you please go into what you swap out when you're sideboarding cards in?

September 14, 2015 10:09 a.m.

Sideboarding guide will be up tomorrow at the latest (trying to get it on here tonight). I'm also working on making some videos (although this will take me a little while because I've never done anything like that so I'm starting as a complete technological novice trying to figure it out :).

September 18, 2015 11:44 p.m.

Also, trying out a 1-of Genesis Hydra as well (in place of a single Nylea's Presence). Just seeing how it works out (as scaleable spells are always great in devotion and it can also help hit any of the sideboard cards in games 2 and 3.

September 19, 2015 1:11 a.m.

The deck is getting very tuned now. I've added a 1-of Genesis Hydra. I've added a discussion in the "Support" section; however here it is:

Genesis Hydra is a perfect 1-of. "Scaleable" cards and options are always good options in green devotion. While Genesis Wave (see below) is obviously more explosive; Genesis Hydra offers a few distinct benefits....first, it's a creature that normally will have be at or above 5/5 (in mana cases will be 10/10+). This blocks nearly every heavily played creature in Modern. Also, Kessig Wolf Run immediately makes it a trampling threat.

Secondly it is another way to dig for our important sideboard pieces and/or combo pieces. Since they are all permanents; he can help us find them quickly in games where all we've found are ramp cards.

Thirdly, even if countered; we still get what we are searching for. There isn't a card in the deck that is stronger against control. A big body, that draws and digs, AND offers two devotion that STILL gets value when countered...well worth a slot. The only issue is that it is not great in multiples and is not strong off of a wave; so one really is the best number. One thing is for certain...the combination of Genesis Hydra and Cloudstone Curio is amazing :)

I honestly don't see any additional changes to the main boar without the printing of new cards. Nylea's Presence is the worst card (and the only one I can ever see being replaced), but it still has a lot value; so there would have to be a VERY good card to replace it (or a good argument). The sideboard will of course change with the meta as it shifts; but I have a great base of 50+ cards to rotate in and out; and I LOVE where the board is now.

Anywho. I'll let you know right when the sideboarding section is up.

September 19, 2015 3 a.m.

simoHayha....Great ideas! You should absolutely build a deck with the cards you mentioned. It would be a blast to both play and just to watch!!! :)

There are a couple reasons I run the Ghost Quarter + Crucible of Worlds package over Blood Moon:

  1. Blood Moon turns my Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx and Kessig Wolf Run's "off". These can be important, so if I can get around this I want to.

  2. Crucible of Worlds is colorless. This leads to important synergies with both Ancient Stirrings and Ugin, the Spirit Dragon.

  3. Crucible of Worlds is a great solution to one of the best ways to beat us...land destruction. If we run into a deck with heavy land destruction, between Courser of Kruphix, Eternal Witness, and Crucible of Worlds we can basically turn a weakness into a strength!

Having said this, Blood Moon is a SPECTACULAR card. If I had more room in the board, I would run it too. It just steals so many wins for a mono-colored (essentially) deck. I would advise everyone to utilize it in their board if they can (especially if your meta is heavy in both land-based decks like Tron and Amulet, but even moreso if the meta also includes 3+ color decks that need a bunch of fetches/shocks (as you will invariably beat them just playing a Blood Moon as well. Great idea simoHayha

I also LOVE both Eidolon of Blossoms and Yeva, Nature's Herald. Both have amazingly powerful abilities. I simply didn't have room for them (I don't have enough creatures to take the best advantage of Yeva, and couldn't make Eidolon work here). I did run an "Enchantment Devotion" deck in the past with Eidolon of Blossoms being the absolute all-star (it starts getting very crazy when you are looping Abundant Growth's via Cloudstone Curio and drawing two cards each time for only :) ).

Superb ideas simoHayha....your deck is AWESOME btw.

I had a blast playing this deck at my last FNM. We played modern Two-Headed-Giant, and me and my teammate went 3-0. The other head played a control deck, with counter magic, creature removal, and no win condition. He did a fantastic job of shielding and protecting the combo.

First two games were against teams trying to get around our life total with infect, and both games I was able to combo off.

The third game was much more of a grind. They had a lot of counter magic, and answers to our spells; so we ended up winning off the back of a 26/1 Birds of Paradise.

This isn't tournament results or anything, but it was a ton of fun anyways!

You do realize that Bring to Light can't fetch you cards from your sideboard, right? If you want that kind of card, Glittering Wish is a better choice.

Post-board it provides extra copies of everything you really want to draw.
