PooPlayer Porphyry Nodes seems like it could work. The discard effect was a way to remove threaths indirectly, or so I reasoned when I built the deck. Not so happy to press the manabase even more since there are very tricky things which I must hardcast like Ball Lightning . What will happen if I drop Blightning for Porphyry Nodes and Thoughtseize for Spark Elemental (as Disfigure thinks) ?

Will the tempo increase without loss of control or will I lack sufficient ways to remove slower card threaths?

tempo is what you're aiming for, with that set up you'll be too quick for an opponent and make it hard for them too keep things in play with porphyry out as it's removal that just sits there until there's nothing left for it to destroy.

MattTheNinja Actually playtested your deck already, it's great for being standard!

Man I love this deck so much, when I saw Athreos get spoiled I got excited to try a borzhov modern deck.

Have you considered Tymaret, the Murder King ? He's a good 2 drop that can sac your creatures after they have attacked with any left over mana you have for extra benefits instead of just letting them die at the end of turn. I don't know if it fits the deck, but just an idea.

MyTummysFull Isn't Tymaret, the Murder King a bit too weak for this kind of deck? I mean, compared to Fling tymaret is not that good and he's only 2/2 and don't have haste or anyhting like that. In standard he would work since it's a slower format but modern decks tend to have quite much tempo. Really wished that there would be a cheaper variant of Pandemonium in modern since it would work so well in this deck.

So it looks like you've moved on from this deck. I built it as best as I could... but still haven't been able to playtest. How does it run, what decks do you have trouble with? Or is this as god-like as it looks? My lands aren't anywhere close to what you have, but 4 copies of Mana Confluence will hopefully help.

I didn't have enough lightning helix's or path's so I'm running three lightning bolts. Also I don't have the Ball Lightnings so I put in a couple Shriekmaw . Seems like a good fit since with evoke it still hits the battlefield and then gets sac'd. Removal seems like it's always nice to have more of.

Pseudolife actually (prepare for sad truth) this deck doesn't exist in real life...because I'm a poor student, 550$ is just out of my price range. but I have playtested this deck alot on tappedout and also on untap.in and it works pretty well. On a more wide perspective it's more difficult, it needs more development before you can win any major tournament with this deck. But I believe that this deck has potential to do so.

This deck seems amazing ( Abd like a lot of fun), so that's a +1 from me. Has anyone suggested Keldon Marauders ?

It could do some work in this set-up and with Whip of Erebos it COULD replace Spark Trooper because is all that lifegain necessary haha

misterkyle says... #15

With the fetch and ravnica lands, the more lifegain the better. also, Keldon Marauders does not have any real way to hit the player at self, so against any deck with creatures, it's only a guaranteed 2 damage, whereas Spark Trooper , for all its faults, should be able to hit harder than that, and with the lifegain, which is nice.

almerican Keldon Marauders fit a more burn type deck and as misterkyle said you can only guarantee two damage therefore I won't use but thanks for the suggestion !

Really, I'd tone it down on the manabase. Burn decks will simply tear you apart. If you have a less painful manabase, you can replace the helix with lightning bolt, which is just an all-around better option. Fling, while clever, requires a minimum of 3 mana (2 for fling itself, and at least one more for the card being flung), and there are only 4 creatures that will really get great value out of it. I'd take out ball lightning for spark trooper- 3 red is just... painful. Without the greedy ball lightning, you should be able to run a less hurtful manabase.

September 11, 2014 6:01 p.m.

Agree with Beep that this deck need a slight less painful manabase which could replace helix with bolt. The trick is that we need something better than Fling for damage output. Also Spark Trooper disrespecting colours is 4cmc compared to Ball Lightning s three. Quite wonder if Butcher of the Horde would fit here but I think the downside(requires creatures to sac) is greater that the benefit of getting a scary flyer with potential lifelink, haste or vigilance. What catches my eye in the maybeboard is Shriekmaw , combos very well with athreos and is relative cheap. Don't know what would go out thought.

September 12, 2014 9:16 a.m.

I don't know if this has been said or not but Fulminator Mage would be terribly annoying with an Athreos, God of Passage on the field.

Pseudolife says... #20

Ok so I ran this deck (slightly modified) recently at a small tournament recently... and I only won a single game. I'm not giving up on it... keep the suggestions like Fulminator Mage coming. I think he could have really helped in several instances. Control matchups STOMPED me. My mana was a little slow, but basically if you can't cast creatures you're screwed.

So 4 Thassa is a must for sideboard. I also think there are still too many spells in this deck.

Also, your update about the land killing you is TOTALLY true. The only thing that kept me alive was the spark troopers and the helixes... but lighting bolt is way better.

I suggest buddy lands from innistrad and core sets...

September 14, 2014 3:51 p.m.

Another suggestion would be Avalanche Riders , Fulminator Mage 's Living End cousin. For the sideboard, I would consider Thalia, Guardian of Thraben against control matchups since you don't have too many noncreature spells, and that one extra colorless wrecks a lot of control manabases.

September 15, 2014 10:51 a.m.

The more I've thought about this deck the more that it occurs to me that it is essentially a burn deck with a lot of creatures. Whenever a extremely annoying creature, such as Fulminator Mage , dies, the opposing player doesn't want their manabase wrecked so they pay the 3 life and essentially bolt themselves. I think cards that have extremely strong leaving/entering the battlefield effects can really break Athreos' ability.

Hellsing says... #23

I will consider what you have said and next wekeend I can try to focus a bit and see if I can change the build, and I agree with everything you said so far. Thalia could be a great sideboard option indeed.

I'm really glad I could help and would love to hear how this deck does in another Modern tournament! I love the idea and this deck made me look really close at Athreos, God of Passage and I now appreciate him a lot more. It really is a shame that it didn't work out for Pseudolife but I would love to see this deck get fine-tuned and eventually be a force to be reckoned with, I know the idea has a lot of potential. Either way, +1 from me definitely!
